We are saddened to share that lovely Ruby who walks with us regularly, has passed away after a sudden battle with cancer. She was still a young girl and was a big, beautiful, gentle and calm member of both mine and Nikki's groups, adored by all the other dogs and often admired by passers by. She will be very sadly missed and we are thinking of her family at this heartbreaking time 💛🐾

Nikki at Paws Wirral has a Licensed Paws Partnership (L.P.P.) with me at Paws Adventure Walking Service (PAWS) which we started during the pandemic in May 2020. Nikki covers Heswall, Irby, Pensby areas mainly, owns the business herself & is self employed. She has a full cohort of dogs that LOVE her & gets to be her own boss & spend her days outdoors in nature 💚.

I had been thinking about starting a Dog Walking business since 2005, but didn't actually do it until 2017 (creating a proper name & brand in 2018).

Why did I wait so long?

Well, there were many reasons but one of the main ones was the risk of giving up a "normal" job and all the scary-feels that come with that.....

That's understandable & probably what holds 80% of people back.

I waited until I had no job, had children, my own beloved dog had died & I had recently split up with my children's father & moved 100 miles (you can read ALL about that in my book "From Poor To Paw")

& I was feeling utterly terrified!

I started from scratch, figured it all out (which took quite a bit of trial & error & lots of mistakes) & amazingly it was a huge success...

You don't need to make all the mistakes, take a steep learning curve & figure it all out by yourself. I've already done all that for you. All you need in order to start your dog walking business....is ME!

Dog Walking has changed my life & yet it's not a job you'd normally associate with being life changing. My life has changed because being self employed has given me autonomy and flexibility that I never had before, and being a single Mum of two young children, that meant I could be present, something I know a lot of parents worry about. I'm not saying that I could attend every school play, special assembly or sports day but I've only missed a couple over the past 6 years & I'm there for every drop-off & pick up.
It also puts me outdoors each day which has been beneficial to my wellbeing as a whole. In a world where stress & anxiety is high (& again being a single Mum brings a lot of 'stuff' to worry about my way), I find walking outside, in nature very beneficial & therapeutic, to the point where my blood pressure is low, I sleep well at night & I generally feel calm, without anxiety most days.
I also get a high level of job satisfaction out of my job, mainly because like all good dog walkers, I have a good bond with the dogs that I walk & seeing them happy each day gives me a sense of achievement, recognising that I've made a difference to their lives.
The list of benefits goes on, far beyond what I've highlighted in this carousel & something that I think is important to share.
If you're taking stock of your life (as I know many are, things are a bit grim out there at the moment) & have considered dog walking as a career, then I'm looking for people like you. I want to help people become dog walkers & in turn improve their lives (& the lives of the dogs they will walk). I think it's a great & exciting mission to be on. ➡️ It's that Friday feeling: From sunny strolls to rain-soaked romps, it's been a mixed week of adventures with the pups: Daisy, Maisie, Ruby, Aoife, Willow, Bailey, Tilly, Lola, Archie & Jasper🌦️🐕 👣🌟🐾

➡️ When I first got my arthritis diagnosis in my late forties, my immediate reaction was that I would have to stop dog walking, as surely walking all day would make my knees worse? 😞
The moderate diagnosis (stage 3) meant from my perspective that I had knee pain every day & my knees were particularly stiff at the beginning of the walking day & moderately painful at the end of the day. I was only 49 when I got this diagnosis, much earlier than any of my family members who also suffer with the condition. 🦴
Thankfully, I've discovered that the last thing you should do if you have arthritis (at any age) is to stop walking. From a mental health perspective, this was great news as walking in nature is my salvation & the cure for a whole lot of things.🌳 From an arthritic perspective, walking actually helps arthritis by strengthening the muscles & bones (essential if you're in your 50's like me), pumps blood to the affected area, nourishes the cartilage & improves balance. Plus a whole host of other benefits for the rest of your body & mind! 👣
I aim to do at least 10,000 a day & most days I achieve that goal. Some days I exceed it & my knee pain is substantial & some days (usually weekends) I get nowhere near the target of 10,000. I call them my rest days & I allow myself only 2 of those a week. Sometimes 10,000 steps feels too much, particularly in winter but it's a good plan for health so I hope to continue that for as long as possible 💛🐾

➡️ We were immersed in the boundless wonder of nature at our local RSPB Reserve today, seeking out Kingfishers.... it's like unlocking a secret world of colour and magic, where each sighting is a moment of pure (very fast) joy ☄️⚡
We also spotted Little Egret, Hen Harrier, Curlew plus hundreds & hundreds of Pink Footed Geese 🪿
I think it's super important to teach our next generation that nature is a place to go to ease anxiety, calm a dysregulated nervous system & crucially, find wonder in the beauty of the wild 💚
