Ragged and filthy, their feet bare, they wear grave, careworn expressions. For these children, life was nothing but hard work, empty bellies and the constant struggle for survival. The pictures, taken by photographer Horace Warner 100 years ago in Spitalfields in London’s East End, were later used by social campaigners to illustrate the plight of the poorest children in London. On these streets and alleys, hordes of urchins eked out a hand-to-mouth existence, fending for themselves while their parents worked 14-hour days in the factories and docks. It was a time when Britain prospered, thanks to the Empire, which brought immense wealth to factory owners and traders. Yet a stone’s throw from the docks, through which this trade and riches passed, children were dying of starvation and disease. In the East End, nearly 20 per cent of children died before their first birthday. Poor families lived ten to a room with no clean water for washing and drinking. Dead animals littered the streets. Excrement and rubbish often blocked the drains. Diseases such as diphtheria, cholera and measles flourished. A third of households were without a male breadwinner and women were forced to go out to work, leaving children as young as six to look after their younger siblings. Older children ran errands, swept the streets, cleaned windows or helped to make matchboxes and paintbrushes. It was poorly paid, exhausting work, especially for malnourished children, but their contribution - small as it was - could help buy a little stale bread.

I can’t imagine purposely going to NYC for new years just to watch a ball

This meme has been around for years, but seriously, why does Claudine Gay, a black female who majored in plagiarism, get to be the President of Harvard?

Thankfully, affirmative action was struck down by the Supreme Court, but universities still will try to work around it, and corporations and the government are still using DEI and ESG to make woke decisions, resulting in society today

Not feeling too great these last couple of days…

Didn’t think I could get sick in Hawaii,

But I guess I do ride public transit daily and the bus shelters and buses are filled with homeless.

So I went to get the only matzo ball soup in the state with a pastrami corned beef sandwich (there might only be one decent place with matzo ball soup in Indiana as well, I suppose).

Like most of the reviews I read online, the soup here is great 5/5, even if the noodles are spaghetti (kinda weird), but the sandwich is only 3/5 (I’d probably only give it 2/5 on the mainland).

I was curious how I would do on a military entrance exam, ever since they raised the age from 39 to 41 to join. I would’ve done much better on this right after high school or while studying science at Purdue, but 60+ on the OAR is still in the top 10% and the recruiter was fairly impressed. I am not impressed with myself since it has been a couple decades since I’ve multiplied matrices together, solved logarithmic equations by hand, or had to memorize physics equations. Still, I can take basically any of the jobs offered to me at my age, which are intelligence, maintenance / mechanical technician, and supply chain / logistics.

“Nowhere in the streets of London may one escape the sight of abject poverty, while five minutes’ walk from almost any point will bring one to a slum; but the region my hansom was now penetrating was one unending slum. The streets were filled with a new and different race of people, short of stature, and of wretched or beer-sodden appearance. We rolled along through miles of bricks and squalor, and from each cross street and alley flashed long vistas of bricks and misery. Here and there lurched a drunken man or woman, and the air was obscene with sounds of jangling and squabbling. At a market, tottery old men and women were searching in the garbage thrown in the mud for rotten potatoes, beans, and vegetables, while little children clustered like flies around a festering mass of fruit, thrusting their arms to the shoulders into the liquid corruption, and drawing forth morsels but partially decayed, which they devoured on the spot.”

“The People of the Abyss” Jack London - 1903
