Wishing everyone the best in 2025 - may the new year be kind to you!
With the wonderful support we received for our December fundraiser through both individual donations and a couple of grants (grand total is a whopping $79,714!!) we are heading into the new year in great shape. This money will go a long way towards covering our hay, vet, farrier, and feed costs over the next few months, helping us to care for the 160 horses currently at Bear Valley and the 63 horses in foster homes. We’ll be posting soon with a summary of our numbers for 2024, including intakes and costs.

To close the year on a really great note:
We were contacted the other day about a 13 yr old paint stallion with minimal handling that needed a safe landing. Through our network of supporters we found him a forever home with an experience trainer! We are often working behind the scenes to find homes for horses in need, and this one placement really touched my heart. An older, unhandled, stallion doesn't have a lot of positive options so it's fantastic that this beautiful fellow is now going to be safe! We will also be paying for his gelding surgery - another worthwhile cost covered by your donations!

Liam, now Gabe, was 1 month old when he came to us with his mum Marilyn. She’s a quarter horse, 15hh, most likely a broodmare who had an horrid sarcoid on her v***a (that was later removed with success); from a horse dealer in November 2020.
Stacie adopted him when he was 8 months old, who could have known that he would become such a big horse!
At 4 1/2yo, he’s standing at 16hh, still growing and already showing with success!

And another vet day today! Torey, Saxon and Belle had their teeth done today. Belle had her teeth done 2 months ago when she arrived but her teeth were so bad she needed a second appointment! Saxon has a loose tooth but we couldn’t get it out this time, it’s still pretty anchored. Torey had 2 teeth that were so loose they just about fell out on their own, so he’s missing 4 altogether now. The 2 boys also got their sheath cleaned.

Odessa got checked for a boo-boo on her knee, (she was surprisingly very good at having it wrapped - treats help a lot ).

The new mommas (Desdemona, Ophelia, and Beatrice) are doing well. They got dewormed, probably for the first time in their lives, and the poor ladies were very wormy. Desdemona is recovering from a minor viral cold that she probably caught at the auction. She’s bagging up a little more every day - we hope she’ll keep baby inside until this cold snap ends.

Check it out! Saving Grace Animal Society has a movie! This is an amazing organization that we've done rescues with (ie Ray -https://www.bearvalleyab.org/ray-rescue.html). See the movie trailer on their website, and a donation to Saving Grace gives access to the full length movie.
ps they're also fundraising for their own medical clinic!

Saving Grace Animal Society was founded in 2015 by Erin Michelle Deems, who left a decade in animal health to make a difference. She invested her entire pension to start the rescue, later joined by co-founder Amanda McClughan. Together, they built a thriving organization that, by 2021, rescued and r...

Our Story

We can’t do everything, but we can all do something. We make choices every day that have an effect on the world around us. Be kind. Be compassionate. Be gentle.

Everyone at Bear Valley Rescue is committed to caring for the animals here and providing them with the best life possible. It’s not always easy and sometimes there is sadness or anger, but we do what we do because we care. Join us by doing good and making the world a better place.

Bear Valley Rescue was started in 2003 by Mike and Kathy Bartley. Since then, so many wonderful animals and people have passed through our gates. We continue to do what we can to alleviate suffering and to provide a home for unwanted or abandoned horses and other animals. Please go to our website - bearvalleyab.org - to see the current residents of the Rescue.
