🥳 Happy 5th Birthday to our Kaiser K9 Fahren x Ron Litter! It was five years ago on 🇺🇸Memorial Day 2019🇺🇸 that we welcomed these 7 bundles of hope into the world.
This litter marked our first donations to National Disaster Search Dog Foundation and Penn Vet Working Dog Center. We also started our journey in purpose-raising puppies for detection work with this litter with our participation in the AKC Patriotic Puppy Program.

🎓 Happy Graduation to Retter! 🎓
Just around this time last year shelter manager Caitlin of the Leadville/Lake County Animal Shelter was fostering a captured stray dog who happened to also be very pregnant! Thankfully, mama-to-be was in very capable hands!
With Caitlin’s education and experience in working dogs, we inquired as to if any of these puppies would be candidates for our program.
After careful consideration, Retter was chosen among his brothers and sisters as having the most promise! Co-Founder Stephanie hopped on a plane to Colorado and brought him back here to Maryland, where his journey was only beginning.
Over the past year, Retter has been heavily socialized, taught foundational working behaviors, and exposed to a variety of environments. We always let our puppies determine their career paths and he told us he would love a career in detection!
When Retter first met his handler at evaluation day, it was immediately love at first tug. These two were thick as thieves from the jump. We are so excited to see what they are able to accomplish and provide for their community at Sykesville Police Department!
We are so grateful to Caitlin and her team for saving Retter’s mama, providing her with a safe and stable place to raise her puppies, and for entrusting us with such a precious gift.
Nationwide, we are always seeing the potential in the Puppies Of Today to become the Heroes Of Tomorrow!
What an honor and a privilege it was to stop by Dorchester County EMS to visit with K9 Odyssey and receive his challenge coin from his handler.
K9 Odyssey not only provides emotional support to the dispatchers, EMS, and sheriff’s officers in Dorchester County, MD, he also routinely visits the hospital to support the nursing and medical staff.
But the most incredible story we were told today was about his impact at a local school and a student whose life he is changing. This student often struggles and has violent, emotional outbursts. When this happens, K9 Odyssey is called to service. As soon as he walks in the room, the student immediately calms down, comforted by Oddie’s (as his friends call him) natural calming presence and abundance of love.
K9 Odyssey’s story is one about finding the right dog, at the right time, for the right job. He has impacted his community in ways we never imagined, and we are grateful that his handler recognizes his intrinsic gifts and shares them as far as she can.

K9 Hawthorne has officially graduated from National Disaster Search Dog Foundation and has been paired with Alexis Miller with La County Fire Search Dogs, INC. CA-TF2, which is also USA-2. When ready, this team will not only be able to serve Los Angeles, but also the rest of the country and the rest of the world.
We cannot be more proud of Hawthorne, who joins his littermates Certified USAR K9s Alder and Sassafras, as SDF graduates.

🎓 Happy Graduation to Qubit! 🎓
Early last summer someone shared about a rescued puppy in need of placement. The poster, Dr. Monique Misfeldt, a veterinarian in Arkansas, had given this puppy a second chance at life. The puppy had been scheduled to be euthanized at a rural shelter at only a few months old. Dr. Misfeldt recognized the puppy’s potential and took her into her care.
Qubit was definitely a puppy destined for more. She was born with a working dog’s heart and was confident, self-assured, and driven. She took well to playing with toys and soon she learned playing cooperatively with us was just as fun. Her signature move was to jump and yell at you with her toy in her mouth as she pushed it back into you for another round of tug.
As with all of our puppy candidates, Qubit got to experience a wide variety of career options. She excitedly chose “detection dog”!
We are thrilled to follow her journey with Alpha Public Safety & Consulting as she learns the skills she needs to protect the Atlanta, Georgia area from explosive threats.
Qubit was one of so many puppies at risk of being destroyed for being “too much”. She would need a special place to go and, with nowhere to put her, she was out of time. We are beyond grateful to Dr. Misfeldt for saving her and giving us the chance to help a Puppy of Today become a Hero of Tomorrow. Her journey is exactly why we founded Kaiser K9, Inc.

Candidate Cheeto is doing great with 3R K9 Search Foundation! 💪

Cheeto is 5 month old English Setter mix rescued by Caleb Landers in Missouri. While on a search for a missing person, Cheeto’s rescuers spotted him and his mom alone in the wilderness. Being a K9 handler and all-around dog lover, Mr. Landers recovered both mom and pup and brought them back to his home at the conclusion of the search.
Cheeto’s working potential was almost immediately evident, playing a rousing game of fetch shortly after his rescue. And his food drive, well, his name tells it all! Prior to his rescue, he stole a full bag of Cheetos off one of the searcher’s vehicles and ate it before anyone could catch him!
In a Kaiser K9 first, we are excited to announce Cheeto’s rescuer and 3R K9 Search Foundation as flagship participants in our Affiliate Trainer Program. Cheeto will stay and train off-site in Missouri and we will continue to guide and support them as they raise and train Cheeto to become Tomorrow’s Hero.
Cheeto and his mom were reported to be spotted roaming the area for a long time, braving weeks of bitter winter nights. And then they were found. Soon, it is our hope, Cheeto will return the favor.

There are a lot of reasons why we love going to expos and community events. One of those reasons is that we have seen a growing interest in the community wanting to learn more about working dogs and what they do. We may be old school but we think the best way to have these conversations is in person.
One such conversation was with a mother of a child with special needs. She told us about a time that he went missing. He had never gone missing before and she had no frame of reference for what to do or what to expect. She called emergency services and a large police presence arrived to assist.
Thankfully, prior to a full search operation beginning, her son was spotted walking in the direction leading back to their home. He was safe. Crisis was averted.
But, she remarked that despite the substantial police presence, a canine officer was not among them.
We’ve noticed this trend in other stories, where the specialized tool of a canine nose was not utilized when it could have been. We fully recognize that the reasons for this are generally resource based- too much need, not enough resources.
One of the key aspects of our mission here at Kaiser K9 is to try to put a dent in this resource issue. We recognize that there are not enough quality working dogs available to help save lives in this country. We also place a heavy emphasis on the skills of searching and locating live human odor with all of our puppies. It is our hope that if and when law enforcement agencies receive one of our puppies, that they recognize and utilize these dogs for not only for crime-mitigation but also for victim-locating.
It may be outlandish right now to think that every missing persons case can start immediately with a certified tracking or trailing dog if applicable in the circumstance, but it’s not an unreasonable goal. It can be the first step in determining location of travel, if any, and possibly, save a life faster, if at all. We all know time is of the essence in these cases, and the longer a track goes unchecked, the more odor dissipates and the more contaminated it becomes.
We understand that K9 units throughout the country struggle with funding and outreach. At Kaiser K9, our mission is to get more dogs in the right places by seeing the potential in the Puppies Of Today to become the Heroes Of Tomorrow.
We also hope that if law enforcement personnel are reading this that they consider adding tracking to their existing K9s’ certification and skills repertoire, especially for single-purpose detection K9s. While we’re not the right organization to provide these direct resources, may this serve as an open forum for the right people to connect with the right people and start having these conversations.
We don’t know if a K9 may have eventually been utilized in this case had the child not returned home when he did. But we do know that it was not the first resource available. Our hope is to make canine resources for public safety more available in these extremely time-sensitive matters and cases.

Baby’s first bark! 🥰 Is there anything cuter? Retter is learning to bark to access his toy. He learns this through a small amount of frustration. Pretty soon this will translate to barking when he finds a “trapped” person, simulating his response should he ever find someone on a real disaster search. People always ask us how old puppies need to be to start training- puppies as young as Retter begin learning the basics immediately! In fact, the younger they are when they arrive, the more smoothly training usually goes. #MotivationMonday with Candidate Nora! Nora is learning a new skill called article indication. This is a foundation skill for tracking. Wherever Nora’s road takes her, she will have the foundations to get there! In this video, Nora is indicating on a small roofing tack with human odor on it. Nora is learning that indicating on an object with human odor gets her treats! As she progresses in her training, she will learn to only indicate on the objects that smell like the person she is tracking! In the end, she should learn to follow a trail of human odor and indicate on any of their items she finds along the way and, hopefully, the person at the end of the trail! Nora is 9 months old and we will begin looking for a permanent job for her! It’s a #WagWednesday with Mobi! Mobi is working on the foundations for Direction and Control. Direction and Control is a trained skill used by search and rescue handlers to be able to be direct dogs through areas that the handler is unable to navigate themselves. The skill is evaluated during certification tests at distances the size of a baseball diamond! As with all training, we start small and work our way up! Mobi is learning to move in multiple directions and to only move from platform to another when directed to move.
