Today is but not all cats want to be hugged- just like many humans! ❌🙅🏻‍♀️🐈

Some cats are touch sensitive, other cats have pet aggression, and so many senior cats have medical conditions like arthritis and are sensitive to being tightly held or touched in certain areas.

Cats often don’t like being hugged as it makes them feel TRAPPED, which puts them into fight or flight. That’s why so many cats that are being held fiercely struggle to run away.

When you’re petting your cat, give them the CHOICE! See where there want to be petted or even if they want to be petted- using a consent test.

What is a consent test? PET-PET-PAUSE then see what the cat wants.

Does your cat like being held?

What is this Animal Smile Africa dog telling you? Meet Boxer!

It was Boxer’s first time getting vaccinated. His journey to veterinary care happened when Dani heard Animal Smile Africa’s announcement about free veterinary services during one of their outreach events. Curious to learn, Dani invited his friend- and his friend’s dog, Boxer- to join.

During the outreach event, Boxer received:
🐕 responsible dog ownership education information (for Boxer’s owner)
🪱deworming
🦠 treatment for ectoparasites (fleas, lice, mites),
❤️‍🩹 a health check,
💉 and his first-ever vaccinations!

Boxer’s body language shows that he is hesitant yet curious with the interactions. His back legs and tail are neutral, while his front legs are braced and his back is slightly hunched. His ears are to the side but a bit forward showing interest, his mouth closed, and his neck is extended for the interaction. He could be more braced due to the puppies in the area who may have also been playfully interacting with him.

❤️ This is the start of responsible pet ownership for Boxer, his owner and Dani, who said, “I didn’t know dogs could be treated like this.”

🥵There is a heat warning for Calgary tomorrow, with highs of 31C. Although it’ll cool off on Friday, Saturday will also see highs of 30C.

What does that mean for your dogs and cats?

Walk them during cooler times such as mornings and evenings. Keep them and YOU well hydrated! And don’t leave an animal in a vehicle. 🚗

How do you keep your dog or cat safe during hot days?

What is this Animal Smile Africa dog telling us! Meet Fuhara.

As soon as Fuhara was brought to Animal Smile Africa’s team, it was clear that something was wrong. Fuhara was weak, trembling, and struggled to walk.

Tick paralysis had taken hold, and she quickly needed help. Tick paralysis is a serious condition that occurs when the toxin from a tick’s saliva causes gradual paralysis, primarily affecting the nervous system. Symptoms often include weakness, loss of muscle control, especially in the hind legs, and difficulty breathing. With quick veterinary treatment, most dogs infected, like Fuhara, can expect a quick recovery.

Their team provided loving veterinary care such as:

❤️ Gently removing the ticks from her ears and body,
🛀🏿 Providing Fuhara with a thorough medicated bath to soothe her skin,
💉 And a rabies vaccination.

Fuhara’s body language tells us that she is very stressed, likely from the pain of her condition. Her body, legs, and tail are all tucked and close to her body. Her ears are pulled back, mouth is closed, and brow furrowed. The whites of her eyes are showing (whale eye) and her pupils are dilated.

Thankfully, Fuhara received the care that she needed. Give Animal Smile Africa a follow to see more of their life-saving work.

Across Canada gender-based violence (GBV) is on the rise. But what does this have to do about pets?

Some form of animal abuse is present in 89% of GBV cases. And having a pet prevents 75% of GBV survivors from leaving their abuser.

That’s why we started our Nationwide Gender-Based Violence Shelters & Programs Directory that focuses on locations that accept cats and dogs. It details the location, animals are accepted, any restrictions on animals, and contact information.

So, survivors can access the information they need for themselves and their pets with 1 easy click.

If you or your nonprofit have a shelter or program that helps GBV survivors and pets, DM us to add you to the directory.

Do your shelter dogs bark nonstop at your shelter? Are you unsure of how they’ll play with toys or behave with toys in a home? Or are you interested in what toys they like?Get ready! Our “1-1 Enrichment Session for Shelter Dogs” will help you with that!
