The holidays aren’t always the most joyful time of the year. For individuals with or without pets experiencing domestic violence, the holidays often mean a rise in abuse. Here are 5 reasons why!

🍻Increased alcohol consumption
💵 Financial strain of the holidays
🫣 Additional stress of families and pressure to make the holidays magical for extended families, children, and animals
🏡 More time at home with the abuser
🚘 Reduced or closed social services and support people out of town, making it harder for survivors to seek help

What can be done?

💻 Download our free resource “Safety Planning for People Fleeing Domestic Violence with Their Pets”! Have important numbers nearby, keep gas in your vehicle, make sure your vehicle is plugged in, charge your phone, and have a discreet “to go” bag for you and your children and pets.

Do you have time off over the holidays and want to help your local animal shelter, but don’t know how? Here are 5 ways that you can help!

🐈 Donate supplies- look at their supplies list on their website, their Amazon Wish Lists, or contact them and ask what they need- such as pet food, litter, treats, towels, beds, and toys.

🚘 Organize a supply donation drive or bottle drive. Ask your local animal shelter to list their most needed supplies and reach out to your community to donate them. Or organize a bottle drive to raise much-needed funds.

🩺 Sponsor a pet- cover the veterinary costs for an animal in need.

🏡 Foster a pet- use the time off you have over the holidays to help a shelter dog or cat decompress with a sleepover or a foster home.

🚶🏻‍♀️Volunteer- to walk a dog, help with enrichment, clean, or help at an adoption event.

And if you are thinking about adopting a shelter dog or cat over the holidays, remember that animals are for forever, not just for Christmas.🎄

What is this Animal Smile Africa dog telling you? Meet Faru! 🐕

Faru’s owner brought him to one of Animal Smile Africa’s outreach veterinary clinics to receive his rabies vaccination. But, Faru was quiet and not eating well. After the Animal Smile Africa’s veterinary team examined him, they determined that he had a fever and it wasn’t safe for him to receive a vaccination until the fever had been addressed and he was healthy.

To help improve Faru’s condition, Animal Smile Africa team provided him with:
🩺 an examination,
💊 treatment, further checks,
💉and a few weeks later, when he was healthy ❤️, his rabies vaccination.

Faru’s body language indicates that he is uncomfortable, likely from the fever. His legs are a bit stiff (possible from the handling or the fever), his eyes are glassy and dilated, ears forward, forehead furrowed, facial muscles tense, and tail low.

By understanding dog behaviour, Animal Smile Africa’s team can work with dogs like Faru, putting their health, well-being and welfare first- to help and heal them!

While you prepare your homes for the holidays festivities, it’s also time to prepare your dogs and cats!

What does this look like?

🤫 Organizing a quiet room for your dog or hiding space for your cat for when holiday guests arrive
🐕 Crate training your dog, especially if they’re not used to crates, so they can have quiet time away from your company or a safe space during dinner time
🛑 Putting up baby gates to create dog only zones away from in well-trafficked areas in your home
🧸Putting your dog or cat’s toys into their quiet room - away from people so not to cause any potential resource guarding
🛟 Buying a calming pheromone like Feliway, Adaptil, or Rescue Remedy and plugging them around your home

Tuesday was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) , in the last year, 840 million women were subjected to violence from an intimate partner. Violence against women is a global human crisis with increasing rates.

But, why is a companion animal behaviourist posting about this? Because animal professionals, whether a veterinary professional or a behaviourist are the professionals who see the animals and their potential home life. The Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Housing stated that women whose abusers severely abuse their pets experience higher levels of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse directed towards them.

That’s why we have free resources for animal professionals and survivors with animals on our website! Check it out here https://www.welfare4animals.org/free-resources-and-products

What is this Animal Smile Africa dog telling you? Meet Charlo! 🐕

When Nelson brought his dog Charlo to Animal Smile Africa’s outreach veterinary program, Charlo's behaviours showed that he was very scared. Thankfully, Nelson identified that Charlo was scared- and showing great love for his dog- took the time to play with Charlo and calm him so that he could receive the life-saving vaccines.

The Animal Smile Africa team provided Charlo with:
💉a rabies vaccine,
🪱 and a deworming application.

Charlo’s body language tells us that he is very uncomfortable and fearful with the situation. The whites of his eyes are showing, all his facial muscles are tense, ears pinned back, head carriage lowered (to make himself look smaller), back hunched, legs braced, and tail tucked closely to his body.

By understanding dog behaviour, Animal Smile Africa's team can work with dog owners like Nelson to create trust in the community and calm the dogs that they treat.

Although over 60% of Canadian households have a pet, finding pet-friendly housing is often a struggle.

Tenants often encounter landlords who don’t accept pets, using a “no pets clause”, or only accepting pets under certain conditions. Such as rules on the size, breed, and number of animals allowed.

What to do when you have to choose between your beloved animal family member and a place to live?

According to the BC SPCA, the lack of pet-friendly housing is one of the top reasons that animals are being surrendered to shelters in BC and across Canada. Every day, the housing crisis is forcing people to make the heartbreaking decision to have a home or to keep their pet.

If you’re a renter in Canada, check out our FREE Resource- “Dog-Friendly Rental Tips” https://www.welfare4animals.org/free-resources-and-products. Another way that we’re helping is by creating a Directory for gender-based survivors with pets- DM us to get your organization added!

Do you agree with this???

According to a Journal of Consumer Research survey conducted in June, 2024, 81% of millennials admitted that they love their pet more than certain family members.

And with the holidays coming up- hanging out with your pet might be less stressful than attending family dinners.

16/11/2025

that one of the signs of stress in cats is lip licking??? 👅

When cats lick their lips when they’re not hungry or grooming, it is a sign of stress. It is a displacement behaviour - where your cat is attempting to calm themselves down. Like how we fidget by tapping our feet or scratching at our hands or arms when we are stressed, nervous, or uncomfortable.

If you see your cat licking their lips 👄- PAUSE- and look around you to see what could be causing them stress and manage the situation BEFORE their stress level elevates and leads to your cat hissing, scratching, or running away in fear.

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to cover the different signs of stress in cats and what they mean! Follow along to learn about all things cats. 🐈‍⬛ 🐈

What is this Animal Smile Africa dog telling you? Meet Kido! 🐕

When Safari brought his dog Kido to Animal Smile Africa’s outreach veterinary program, poor Kido was incredibly dehydrated, weak, and had a fever. After being examined, she was diagnosed with the deadly parvovirus. Thankfully, Animal Smile Africa’s team were able to provide Kido with the gentle and consistent care to help Kido completely recover from parvovirus. In the future, she will be vaccinated against parvovirus and rabies.

Kido’s body language tells us that she is in pain. Her facial muscles are tense, eyes are squinted, ears are pulled back, back is hunched, legs are stiff, and a general sense of discomfort. Thankfully, Animal Smile Africa’s hard work helped her recover and continue to live a happy life with Safari.
