Our cats and dogs fill our days with glimmers. The little purrs, nudges of their nose against our hand, and leaning or curling against us for pets.

Glimmers are not only tiny moments of joy, they provide you with the feeling that the world is OK, even if it is for a fleeting moment.

Here’s hoping that your day has some glimmers ✨in it.

If your dog is reactive or dog-dog selective, it’s ok for them to not have many or any doggy friends. They’ll find friends and family with the humans who love them and perhaps like Boon the dog here - a friendly neighbourhood magpie. 🐕🐦‍⬛❤️

Does your dog excel at cues like SIT but becomes a mess and forgets all their learning when seeing other dogs?

That’s the difference between cues for life skills and behaviour modification. Cues are hand or verbal signals that prompts a dog to perform an action. Like SIT.

While behaviour modification works to address the underlying emotional states that drive your dog’s behaviours and create new, positive associations with the triggers. ➡️ Like your dog barking and lunging at other dogs to learning how to be calm when seeing other dogs.

If your dog can regularly perform a cue but struggles when seeing other dogs or when the doorbell is rung or when they see cats- they’re not being spiteful, they’re struggling.

Just like how you’d struggle if you saw something or someone that scared you- like a big bug crawling about in your home!

Contact us for behaviour modification help virtually or in-person.

What is this Animal Smile Africa dog telling you? Meet Rock!

A young boy, Ndewa, happily brought his dog friend, Rock, to an Animal Smile Africa outreach program to get his rabies vaccine. Why? Because if Rock is not vaccinated and is bitten by another unvaccinated dog, the veterinary hospital bill may be too high for Ndewa’s family to manage. Also, in Tanzania, dogs need to be vaccinated and receive rabies vaccination cards from specific veterinary institutes or clinics, like Animal Smile Africa, to be officially recognized as being rabies-free.

We’re exactly 1 month away from , where we raise awareness about the collective and individual steps, such as from Animal Smile Africa and Ndewa, to eradicate rabies. Now, Ndewa and Rock can safely walk together- until next year!

What is this Animal Smile Africa dog telling you? Meet Lobi!

Lobi was brought to one of Animal Smile Africa’s outreach programs, where they provide essential veterinary services to animals in communities across Tanzania. However, on that day the line for veterinary care was very long, so the owner decided to bring Lobi back the next day. That time, Lobi received his rabies vaccine and was neutered.

In this photo, Lobi is showing a softer and playful physical body language, such as his soft eyes, open mouth, and forelimbs open like a play bow. Likely, the leash/rope that was a bit tangled prevented him from showing more playful body language in his hindquarters.

Whether you’re at home, on a walk, at a friend’s, or at a park- proactive management with your dog is KEY!

An estimated 70-80% of dog bites happen at home and about 1/3 to 20% occur in public places. Bites can happen in seconds and usually with a familiar dog.

Management can look like baby gates, going to private dog parks, dog-only areas and child-only areas in the home, leashes, muzzles, harnesses, parallel walks, and prepared enrichment.

Take the time to proactively manage!

What else do you use for management?

Dogs are the most common predator in the world and they live in our homes.

We love our dogs, they’re happy to see us, and us happier and healthier. All too often we think that little Spot or Rex who can do no harm to anyone or anything.

But even though dogs are domesticated, they can do serious harm to the cats and small animals that you also share your home with and to farm animals and wildlife that you share your surroundings with.

A dog’s predatory drive isn’t BAD- it’s natural instincts that have been developed over thousands of years. But it means that we be responsible dog owners and always keep own dogs on a secure leash and harness, unless in designated areas.

This is why it is critical to take dog-cat introductions slow and steady- to keep your cat safe when bringing a dog into your home, or vice versa.

If a dog or cat has had a previous negative experience with their nails being trimmed - the sight and sound of nail clippers will send them cowering and hiding in fear.

Perhaps during that experience, their nails were cut too short, their nails bled, or unnecessary force and restraint was used.

What to do?? Often the best solution is to get new nail clippers and start desensitizing your dog or cat to the sight of the new nail clippers. That looks like:

Sight of new nail clippers 🟰 Good things

Start there! And follow along for more dog and cat nail trimming tips! 💅🏼
