CCCI National Specialties Announcement!

We are happy to announce that the 2026 National Specialty Show will be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We are excited to work with the Mid-Continent Kennel Club of Tulsa, Inc. to be included with their show weekend April 24 (Day of Specialties only), through April 26, 2026. April 25 and April 26 will include not only the MCKC All-Breed Shows but also the Tulsa Non-Sporting Club Group Shows. Our Regional Specialties will be held with the all-breed show on Saturday as Designated and Concurrent Specialties. This will give you the opportunity to show SIX TIMES for points in three days. Our Host Hotel will be the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel & Convention Center which is part of the Marriott family of hotels https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/tulbr-renaissance-tulsa-hotel-and-convention-center/overview/

Please save the dates April 23-26, 2026 and make plans to come to Tulsa!

And if you haven't already, don't forget to put the 2025 National on your calendar! We will be in Wilmington, Ohio at the Roberts Centre April 28-May 1, 2025. There will be another email this month to give you everything you need to know about Flying High in Ohio 2025.

And on that note, it's time to start looking for a place for the 2027 shows to be held. Bids should be submitted at least 30 days before the Spring Board Meeting, which will be April 28, 2025. We highly encourage working with a local cluster to help with the ever-increasing costs of appropriate venues. If you have any questions about what is needed, please contact Dave Cook at [email protected]. He has all the expertise you need to put together a bid to host the National Specialty. You can also download the current Show Manual from the CCCI website at www.chowclub.org .

National Specialties are our hallmark event for showing off our dogs, seeing old friends, getting new ideas and making new friends. It is the one place where we all come together and have at least one thing in common – the love of our Chows. You don't want to miss out.

Thank you,
Cathy Clapp, President

CHOW LIFE EDITOR NEEDED !!

Do you like to design? Put pieces together to make a coherent picture like a jigsaw puzzle? Looking for a little extra cash in your pocket? Like to research and find fascinating articles to share with others? Well, this might be the opportunity you are looking for!

The Chow Chow Club, Inc. is looking for a new editor for Chow Life. The current editor is stepping down at the end of this year. As a result, we will need a new captain at the helm of our quarterly publication as of January 1, 2025. We are looking for someone that is creative and ambitious. Someone that will go out and solicit advertisements which is what keeps the wheels turning. We need an editor that is not too shy or too busy to contact specialty winners to use their coupons to advertise their dogs after their wins – we need someone that understands the value of a well-designed ad and is willing to promote it to those showing as well as those breeding that might have a planned breeding or new puppies to advertise. We need someone that understands the value of a hard copy publication as a record of our club and breed.

Below are basic requirements of the job:

Must be a member in good standing of the Chow Chow CIub, Inc.

Design ads & create magazine layout
Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Bridge

Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
Solicit, locate & select articles for the magazine

Upload, review & approve the finished magazine using the printer’s online system.

Create the digital magazine file & upload it to FlipBuilder digital magazine server
Maintain a list of subscriber information & subscription expiration dates

Respond to communications regarding Chow Life

Coordinate financial payments & records with Chow Life Bookkeeper

Submit quarterly reports to the CCCI Board

Maintain the MailChimp email list for sending out notices

Send out email reminders to various Committee Chairs & Board Members about reports to be published.

Market Chow Life including using the Chow Life page

Send out email blasts to members using the CCCI Publicity Committee (also, ask them to post it to the CCCI FB page)

Send the CCCI Web Admin any required changes or updates to the Chow Life website pages

Work with CCCI Regional Liaison to distribute Chow Life Coupons for Regional Specialty Winners

If you are interested in this paid position, please send your Letter of Interest, Resume and any pertinent samples of your work to Cathy Clapp at [email protected] .

The Chow Chow Club Inc has lost two of our dedicated members:

We have received notification of the passing of two of our long time CCCI members and devoted Chow Chow fanciers. They will be remembered and missed by all who enjoyed knowing them.

Mary Suzy Peters (Xuxan Chow Chows) Anchorage Alaska

Suzy was a devoted chow fancier who proudly exhibited lovely chow chows from Dreamland and Eastern Magic kennels as well as other breeders. She enjoyed being an active ambassador for our breed and finished many Champions.

Sarah Parrish (Sa-Mi Chow Chows) Cantonment Florida

Sarah Parrish, 80, of Pensacola, FL passed away July 18, 2024. Sarah bred and exhibited many chow chow champions and loved teaching others about the breed.
Sarah was a lifelong animal lover, earning numerous awards and recognition, and always passionate about life. In lieu of flowers the family kindly request donations be made to any local animal shelter.

Our thoughts and prayers are with both their families and friends. The Fancy has lost two great contributors to the breed.

Common-sense advice and help

26/07/2024

On August 1, 2024, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will implement new restrictions and requirements for the entry of dogs into the U.S. Anyone planning to bring a dog into the U.S. in the near future should familiarize themselves with upcoming import policy changes.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes the serious health threats posed by the recent, continuing import of unhealthy dogs using fraudulent veterinary/import paperwork, and supports CDC’s intention of protecting the public from serious health risks.

However, AKC remains concerned that banning the import of all dogs younger than six months is overly burdensome and will have a disproportionate impact on the entry/importation of low-risk, personally-owned dogs, including those that regularly cross the U.S.-Canadian border for canine events, veterinary care, and breeder collaboration.

What You Can Do

AKC is pleased that some members of Congress, as well as other responsible sporting dog organizations, share this concern and are asking CDC to delay implementation of this rule for at least six months, so that possible exceptions for low-risk, personally-owned dogs may be considered.

If you have concerns about the new import rule, we encourage you to contact your members of the U.S. House and Senate, and the CDC. Respectfully express your concerns and ask for a delay in implementing the new rule so that concerns relating to personally-owned, low-risk canine imports/entry can be addressed.

Congressional outreach is particularly valuable if you live in states that are close to the U.S./Canada border, as many of these members are in direct contact with the CDC regarding this issue.

Share messages in personalized, individual emails, calls, or letters in which you represent your own situation or that of your club.
Tell your story about how it negatively impacts you and your colleagues, events, etc., as responsible dog enthusiasts.
Ask the CDC to work with the American Kennel Club and other organizations that represent responsible dog owners to consider exceptions for personally-owned dogs that can affirmatively demonstrate little risk of canine rabies.
Other points you may wish to include:

The final rule disregards the difference in risk profiles for personally-owned pets and dogs intended for transfer.
The proposed rule for comment included exceptions, potentially reducing comment, but the final rule provided no exceptions.
There is little risk from fully vaccinated puppies from low-risk countries entering the U.S. at four months of age.

If you can, please also share your messages and any responses with the AKC Government Relations team at [email protected]. We will use these messages for reference as we continue to reach out directly to Members of Congress and the CDC.

Your respectful outreach can lay a foundation for cooperation between responsible dog owners and government agencies to protect both public health and canine travel.

Thank you

Regardless of the ongoing debate about when Chow Chows were at their best I'd like to show at least one photograph of a top winner of the 1930s that I think looks like he could still win today. Ch. Choonam Hung Kwong was BIS at Crufts 1936 and Reserve BIS at Crufts 1935 and 1939, one of the best records ever at this show. He in fact was six times BIS at general championship shows in the U.K. and won 44 CCs.

I'm no Chow specialist but would like to hear from Chow breeders and judges who would be able to say more …

Announcing the Chow Chow Club, Inc. newest update to the Chow Health Pedigree Database!

Unmeasurable thanks to Phil DeGruy (and I'm sure Vicki too!) for his dedication and work in updating the valuable resource for Chows in the USA!

The online pedigree database contains the health and pedigree information collected for the club.

It is a tool to assist in breeding selection for improving the breed health of Chow Chows. The new program is online and can be found at:

Home Page: https://pedigree.chowhealth.org/pp_index.php

Search Page: https://pedigree.chowhealth.org/pp_search.php

Pedigree information, photos, health certifications may be added to the database by filling out the Submit Pedigree form found here: https://chowhealth.org/mambo/submit-pedigree

All links above are also available from the Chow Health website .

The new online pedigree program contains and displays the same pedigree and health information as the old one did. Two new information fields were added COI and AVK. The new online pedigree program has the same basic abilities as the old online program did.

Trial pedigrees can be made by anyone and work essentially the same as they did before in the old online program. These trial pedigrees are not saved in the database.

There are links for submitting corrections/additions on search result pages and on each pedigree.

For any questions, please contact Phil DeGruy

Thank you!

It’s summer vacation time in the USA! Plan on traveling with your pup? It’s not to early or late to train them good behavior when traveling. 🐾🚗🏨🏕️

Traveling with your dog is a great way to spend a vacation, but it's important to make sure your canine is ready to behave like a good citizen on the road.

With the impending heatwave hitting the west & southwestern states across the country, we all know that Chows are very much vulnerable to these extremities.

It doesn’t take very much time to overheat, but also be cautious of surfaces that your dog may usually walk or lie upon.

Knowing how hot is too hot for your dog can help keep them healthy and free of serious consequences. Taking the right precautions to keep your dog safe in hot weather is very important. In this article, Dr. Barri Morrison helps readers understand how hot is too hot for dogs.
