Southern Charm Schnauzers and Puppies Mini Schnauzers ranging in size from Mini's, Toys and Teacups. We also have adorable mini Schnoodles. Each one is born and raised in my home.

Pet Care and Grooming:
• Diets-Dog Foods: 80% of your puppy’s diet should be protein from meat, other animal muscle meat, organs, bone meal and water. The other 20% comes from plants and fillers and does not keep them going like the protein in meat. I use Royal Canine Small breed puppy and Small breed adult. I also like Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice All age Stages dry food. Diamond Naturals i

s for all stages and my puppies and adult dogs love it. It is easy for them to digest and gives them the omega’s they need for their hair coat and joints. Try routine brushing and combing on a daily or bi-weekly basis to get your pet use to your grooming them.
• Brushing/Combing: Just a little brushing or combing gets them used to their grooming routine plus they enjoy your attention. I use different brushes for different things. A paddle brush with the k***s on the ends is good for light debris, a boars hair is good for the longer hair to get out debris, but be careful not to groom them too hard or they won’t like it. I also use a comb to get some larger debris out of their coats.
• Ear Cleaning: This is very important for Schnauzers since hair grows heavily in their ears. You need to keep it cleaned out at least monthly to keep them from having ear mites or ear problems. We use ear powder and our finger tips to pull-snatch the hair out or a small pair of hemostats, but make sure not to go further than you can see in their ear canal. Too far could cause serious ear injury and you don’t want to do this to your precious pet. I learned a good homemade solution which is 50% white distilled vinegar and 50% witch hazel. I put this in their ears and then rub the base of their ears for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. I then let them shake their head to get the excess solution out and then take a Q-tip with a large tip or facial cotton pad to clean their ears to get any extra debris out.
• Nails: Your puppy’s nails grow very fast and need trimming often, at least every two weeks. Trim from just below the curve at the middle part of the nail. It is much easier if you hold them in your lap and get them calm, however some might have to have a small muzzle to keep them calm. Once the muzzle is placed on them they calm right down and let their nails get trimmed. I use the cat nail clippers for smaller puppies and turn them sideways to trim their nails. It seems to work better and cuts them more easily. The larger nail clippers I also turn sideways and cut their nails just below the curve at the middle part of the nail. Please make sure not to cut their nails to short or your puppy will remember how it hurt when you cut in their quick and won’t calm down for you to do it again. A little too long is better than to short. Once your puppy can trust that they won’t be hurt they will be more happily ready to obey you and let you trim their nails and hair.
• Baths: You do not have to give your puppy frequent baths with shampoo and water. They need the oil in their skin to protect from skin issues. Shampooing too frequently causes skin problems and irritation. The one I like best is the Top Performance Concentrated Baby Powder scent, Mild Shampoo for sensitive skin and Conditioner. You can find it on Amazon.com. You can use the body spray to keep your puppy smelling good in between baths. You can also use plain warm tap water to rinse their feet or get a washcloth with just water to wipe them down. Only wash them if there is something in their coat that plain water won’t take out.
• Trimming your Puppy: It is easy to do but takes some practice and self-confidence. Be patient with yourself and your puppy while learning to trim them. Once you get the hang of it, then all you have to do if follow your groomer’s or your Breeders outline to get started and change the cut to what you like best on your puppy. I prefer the Cordless Lithium Wahl Bravura with the all in one blade. It has 5 different settings that are great for grooming your puppy. You can change the length of the blade to accommodate all areas on your puppy. Please make sure not to cut your puppy too close so it won’t cause skin irritation or cutting nicks on their ears or body. Grooming them a little long at first is best until you get use to what length of hair is best for them. I trim in the direction of the hair on their backs, legs and stomachs, and on their heads I groom in the opposite direction starting at the top of their head and go forward just before you reach their eyebrows. I shave from under their eyes forward to just before their nose to keep any hair out of their eyes. Then I shave from the corner of each eye to just before their mouth and stop there to make sure I don’t get their beard too short. Schnauzers have a beard and some like the long hair on their cheeks and some don't. Now for show dogs you need to leave the long beards and cheek hair. If your puppy gets a little restless while trimming them, then let them down for a little while and give them a treat and hug and praise them. Wait a few minutes and then start the grooming again. You don’t have to trim them all at one time. Once you complete the trimming and grooming praise your puppy and give them a hug and a treat. This builds confidence in your pet that you won’t hurt them and when they are good they get praised for it. Always ensure that your puppy/dog leaves your grooming table on a happy note. The smaller the number the shorter the hair. #40 is very short, #30 slightly longer than a #40, #10 is longer
BLADE NUMBER
Select the blade number according to how long you want to leave the coat. The lower the blade number, the longer the hair will be. For example, a #5 blade will leave a hair length of 1/4", while a #30 blade will leave a mere 1/100". A #10 is one of the most commonly used blades because it works well for trimming the body of most breeds. Other blades that work well with most breeds include the #15, #5, and #7 blades. For slightly matted hair use a #5, for heavy or very matted coats select a size #7, and for pads use a #15. BLADE CUT
The cut refers to the length of the hair that’s left after cutting against the natural lie of the coat. Therefore, if the cut is 1/4", the length of your dog’s hair will be 1/4". Going with the grain will leave approximately twice as much hair as going against the grain.
• Teeth Cleaning: You need to brush your puppy’s teeth at least 2-3 times a week. They have the tooth paste for them at the pet supply stores, Wal Mart and you can order it online at amazon.com or Revivalanimal.com. I buy children’s tooth brushes from Dollar General or Wal Mart. I take the tooth brush, put pet tooth paste on it and start by brushing from the back top teeth down and go all the way around, then I start at the back bottom teeth up and go all the way around. Then I brush both the bottom and top teeth across like we do ours. This helps prevent decay and extended Vet Cleaning appointment which can be from $85-$135 per dog/puppy. The Vet won’t normally clean your dog’s teeth until they are at least 2 years old.
