Here's the noses of two deer I'm working on at the moment. Same family, different species, and a real contrast in their muzzles.

I was very sad to hear that brilliant taxidermist George Jamieson has died. I didn't know him well, but whenever I met him he was always kind, welcoming and generous with both his time and knowledge. I spent a memorable day in his workshop mounting a partridge, and learnt so much. Photo 3 is of the sketch/outline from that day, that George felt should always be step 1 of a project. I pinned it up to remind myself, along with my notes of tips and suggestions from him, and I refer back to it regularly. I had planned to go back to learn about mounting game heads. I'm sad that I've missed my chance. Sending love to all who knew him personally.

Today I've finally mounted up this lesser Black-backed gull. I say finally, as there is a tale behind this chap. It was found in Lowestoft as a RTA victim and came my way via a Facebook group, three years ago. I logged it, skinned it, made the form, and popped it in the freezer to finish later. Things came up and a few weeks passed. Then a good day arrived and I went back to the freezer to get it out. And the skin had gone. Huh, weird, I thought, but there is enough in the freezer that I assumed it was just buried. But a later search failed to find it. In the end I figured I'd had a lapse and somehow thrown the skin away... Then last autumn, over 2 years later, I was checking which barn owl I wanted to work on next, and rediscovered the skin! Turns out a well-wrapped skinned gull feels a lot like a barn owl, and I hadn't double checked the log number on the label 🤦🏻‍♀️ Whilst a wrapped whole specimen can keep for years in the freezer, I was concerned the skin would have completely freezer-burnt, so put off defrosting it until finally gathering the courage this morning... and it was fine! Hurrah! And there is extra space on my desk after FINALLY using that form I made 3 years ago!

A caution: chinchillas have the most incredible soft fur, but it is an absolute magnet for grease from your hands, so I would strongly warn against stroking it. Ideally this toot would go safely in a cabinet away from dust and temptation to touch! £200+p&p, message me if you might be interested

Belated post after last weekend's taxidermy conference (it's been a busy week 😬). I was delighted to come away with some rosettes - 1st in the amateur section of the avian challenge with my red-legged partridge, 2nd in amateur mammals with my reindeer calf, and 3rd in amateur birds with my raven.

I was sad not to achieve a credit with the reindeer, but thanks to the judges for taking the time to assess my specimens and leave feedback to help me improve next time. It was a very informative weekend and great to catch up with folk.

I'm heading down to the Guild of Taxidermists conference this weekend. This fella is making the journey too
