Can you guess what game Siri was playing today?
This game will be part of my new 'busy life, happy dog' mini course that will be launching very soon.

Whilst we still have snow on the ground here, and it's freezing, the dogs and I have been busy filming for my new mini course 'Busy life, happy dog'.
The course includes 6 different activities and games for you and your dog to have fun together even if you only have 5 minutes to spare. There are videos for you to watch. downloadable resources and lots of tips to ensure you can fit enrichment into your dogs day no matter how busy you are.
I can't wait to launch this course. There is going to be an online and an in-person version so you can take part no matter where you live.

This is the view from my office window. You can see the Old Potting Shed where I run my scentwork classes.
The snow is starting to melt making it wet and slushy out there. This will turn to ice if it freezes again later.
I won't be walking the dogs today. It was difficult enough to get them all to go out for a wee!!!
Games in front of the fire is on the cards for my gang today.

Aspen, Kara and Arbie all had fun using their noses in their scent work class this morning, whilst their owners had to focus on their own body language.
If you are interested in having a go at scentwork with your dog why not join my next Introduction to Scentwork Workshop in February www.lauracartercanines.com/scentwork

Whilst it was a bit of a shock to the system getting up early to light the fire today, it was all worth it for January's Introduction to Scentwork Workshop.
Did you know I host a podcast called 'How to have a happy dog without going for a walk'?
I launch a new episode every Friday at 7am and this week the topic is 'The busy family blueprint', talking about tips and tricks for busy families.
This photo is of my crazy family after we finished our Christmas dinner this year. With 10 people, including 3 under the age of 10, 2 teenagers, 2 seniors and 3 adults, i know what it is like to be part of a busy household.
The podcast is available on Spotify, Amazon music, Apple podcasts and Goodpods, just search for 'How to have a happy dog without going for a walk'.

Last night we had a light covering of snow here in Scotland.
Snow can elict many different emotions when it comes to taking your dog out for a walk. For some walking in a winter wonderland is fun. For others the hazard of slipping is cause of stress.
I'll wrap up warm and take the big boys out later, but Emba and Dexter the chihuahuas will play games in the warm.
Do you and your dog like walking in the snow, or do you prefer to stay in the warm?

I find one of the biggest challenges at this time of year is the lack of daylight. Today in Johnshaven (where I am based) the sun rose at 8.46 and it will set at 15.40. For many dog owners this means the only daylight hours are during the working day.
I never walk my dogs in the dark. This may originally stem from the safety aspect as a single woman, but also my fear of the unknown around me. Whilst I could put light up collars on my dogs, the wildlife certainly don't wear them, and neither does the bogie man lurking in the shadows.
I'm lucky enough to be able to run get my dogs out during the daylight most days, but we also spend lots of time playing games in the dark evenings to stimulate their brains.
How do you keep your dog happy when the days are so short?

New Year’s Eve can be tough on dogs. All the fireworks, loud music, and excitement can be overwhelming. I always prepare a cosy ‘safe space’ for my dogs to relax. I pull out their favourite games and puzzles—something simple and calming like a sniffing mat or a stuffed Kong.

This photo came up in my memories today from 11 years ago. Sadly Perdy the dalmatian, Bear the Jack Russell and Inca the cat are no longer with us.

I’m Laura, and I live in beautiful Scotland with my three dogs Siri the dalmatian, Mungo the spaniel and Emba the Pomchi, my retired parents, and my 18-year-old twin daughters. We made the big move from Kent to Scotland in 2023, and it’s been quite the adventure!
I started out as a Puppy School Tutor over 15 years ago, teaching basic obedience skills like sit, come, and walk to heel. But here’s the thing: I’ve learned that having a happy, well-behaved dog is about so much more than those basics. It’s about the little moments—the daily interactions, the partnership, and the trust you build. That’s what led me down the path to enrichment and scent work.
