Today we wish a great big Mirkwood style happy eleventh birthday to our gorgeous Doris. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Doris joined us along with her best mate Heather back in May of 2023 moving up from the west country, a long old journey but worth every mile. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
She continues to thrive and it's obvious that mealtimes are a thing of joy for Doris, happy birthday darling, let's hope we share many more. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Hello wonderful people, in four weeks time, Saturday March 15th, these beautiful animals will be due for their second FootVax injection. I was thinking of just doing the injection then doing everything else a few weeks later but this seems particularly bonkers so I think we'll turn it into a full-on day and do everything that needs doing. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
This means that not only will we be giving them their second injection but we will be putting them in the sheep seat to trim their toe nails, worm them, trim wool from their eyes and remove wool from their ears and tidying up any mucky bottoms that happen to be present. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
It is a full-on, quite physical day but I'd love to get enough people signed up to be able to rotate the jobs and give everyone a chance to try their hand at anything they care to try so it really is a case of the more the merrier. Most people who have helped us out in the past have enjoyed and and generally come back for more... the fools! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
I will provide ample refreshments and we usually stop for lunch which will almost certainly be pizzas! ๐Ÿ•โ˜•๏ธ If anyone is travelling from afar to see us/help out I have a spare bedroom with a double bed which you are more than welcome to use. It would be lovely to see as many of you as can make it so don't be shy, over to you! ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Our gorgeous Heather is eight years old today! ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Heather and her best mate Doris joined us from the west country back in May of 2023 and has settled in as if to the manner born. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
You can't really tell from this picture but she has a grey body and a dark brown head, very easy to spot form a distance. She is also a massive biscuit fan, she actually trembles with excitement when it's time for biscuits, guaranteed to make me smile. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Love you Heather, looking forward to sharing many more of your birthdays with you. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Good morning Mirkwood peeps, we have two birthdays for you to celebrate today and both of these gorgeous girls came from Gill and Tim from Coxwold in Yorkshire. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
First up is our dowager duchess Princess who is fourteen years old today, She joined us along with four of her mates (sadly no longer with us) in May of 2018 and has never been an ounce of trouble from that day to this. She is showing signs of her age these days but still has a ravenous appetite despite not being over blessed in the teeth department and she struts around on her wonky little legs like she owns the place... which she does! ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
And second birthday today is YumYum who at seven years old is just half of of Princess's age. Joining us in May of 2023, YumYum has a bit of a penchant for nibbling your trousers which is amusing until she manages to nip your skin at the same time ๐Ÿ˜ณ but I wouldn't change her for the world! ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Happy Birthday to both of you wonderful little creatures, may you both continue to live with us for as long as possible, love you. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Another day, another birthday and today our gorgeous Mia is eleven years old. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Se joined us from Cannock in July of 2023 when her carer moved to the Isle of Wight and has never been an ounce of trouble. She's always up for a bit of a cuddle and is always amongst the first to investigate anything new that may be happening. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
I have a lot of time for this gorgeous little chunk, happy birthday Mia and I hope we get to share many more. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Well would you look at that now, Holly is 13 years old today. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
She arrived along with Sage, who is sadly no longer with us, and Shaun back in October of 2022 and immediately slotted in to the laid back lifestyle we have round here. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
The bane of most elderly Ryelands, she has developed arthritis and no longer gets around the way she would want to but has settled to life in the infirmary and takes each day as it comes, greeting every new dawn with a smile. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Happy Birthday darling Holly, let's enjoy every day you get to spend with us.๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Edie is eight years old today. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
She and her flockmate Alice joined us having retired from the Wonderland flock back in June of 2023. Being charitable you would have to describe her as "plus size" but she's not an ounce of trouble and trundles through life with not a care in the world. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Love you Edie and I hope we get to celebrate your special day many more times. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Well that was a rather special day! ๐Ÿ‘ A massive thank you to Elaine, Rick, Jane, Dave, Tamara and Robert for their invaluable help as today we ran all the girls through a footbath containing Golden Hoof and injected them with Footvax in an effort to get on top of the footrot problem we have at the moment. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Never having done it before I had no idea what to expect but the actuality surpassed my wildest dreams. The race we had designed to get the sheep to the footbath worked a treat and thanks to Anna for suggesting the straw in the footbath 'cause I think this really helped but all the girls and boys were surprisingly well behaved and it went off so much better than I had any right to expect, no escapees, no dramas just a well-oiled machine getting the job done. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Thank you so much guys and gals and a special mention to Dave who I met in Aldi who had never handled a sheep before but who took to it like a duck to water. You were all absolutely magnificent and if the stuff does what it is supposed to do, the girls and boys will probably be thanking you in a few days too! ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Just a reminder that tomorrow we will be treating the sheeps feet to a bath with Golden Hoof and in an effort to try and get on top of the problem, we will also be injecting them with Footvax. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
I believe I currently have four helpers and the weather looks like being quite reasonable. If anyone else would like to come along it would be lovely to see you, if you want something a little less hands-on than manhandling sheep then someone to fill the syringes would be a bit of a bonus. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
You will be fed and watered and have our undying gratitude and these days usually turn out to be good fun too, we'd love to see you! ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Some cheerier news today, Venus is ten years old! ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
She joined us in June of last year and almost immediately palled up with her old flock-mate Vera. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
A gregarious sheep, she is always on the look out for food and fuss and is pretty much glued to my leg when my pocket has biscuits in it, happy birthday Venus, let's hope we share many more. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ ###

*** RIP Willow 12.03.2016 to 28.01.2025 ***
Once again I am saddened to have to tell you that another cherished resident has crossed the rainbow bridge to sheepy heaven. ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’”
Willow arrived with us back in May of 2023 after a career in the show-ring and rearing the next generation of show stoppers. She was never an ounce of trouble and seemed to enjoy her retirement as well as the ubiquitous rich tea biscuits. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
I have cameras in the sheds very kindly bought for us by the one and only Mandy and I always check them just before I go to bed which these days is not long after 9 o'clock. A little over a month ago I found Willow cast (upside down) in one of the sheds (she was OK at bedtime the night before) and she had obviously been down for quite some time. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜ข
This really rocked her and to be honest, she never really recovered, she never regained her bubbly personality or her appetite and obviously decided that her time had come for when I fed them this morning she had departed this mortal coil. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’”
She was one of those sheep that just got on with it, no drama so in a way I'm pleased she decided when to leave. Going to miss you Willow, until we meet again night night darling ### ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Feet... we all have them but sheep have two more than us and are very susceptible to foul-in-the-foot (interdigital necrobacillosis) which I have been trying to keep on top of by catching them and spraying their feet with anti-bacterial spray but have come to the conclusion that advancing years and a weakening body are making this a bit of a no win situation. ๐Ÿ‘
Marti, the lovely lady who gave us Buttons, Miffy, Jemima and Merrylegs also gave us a foot-bath which, until now, I have not used. ๐Ÿ‘
The plan is that on Saturday 1st February we will make up a solution using Golden Hoof and encourage the little darlings to walk through it. This is where you come in because all of these gorgeous girls and boys suffer from hydrophobia, when it rains hard we get a two foot wide by two inch deep puddle form in the gateway to the yard... they just stand there looking at it like you have asked them to swim the Ganges! ๐Ÿ‘
They will therefore need a good deal of encouragement and man handling (waterproofs required!) to get them into the medicated water where whey will stand for a minute or two whilst being cuddled and fed biscuits! ๐Ÿ‘
This is something totally new to me so the more people who come along the merrier, it will be a learning experience for us all. I have no idea how long it will take or how successful it will be but if you never try you never know. Refreshments and a lunch of some description (almost certainly pizza) will be provided. ๐Ÿ‘
Over to you, don't be shy, we'd love to see you and you can learn along with me! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฅฐ

*** RIP Edward (Eddie) 08.03.2017 to 16.01.2025 ***
I am absolutely devastated to have to tell you that when the sun rose this morning, sadly our great big gorgeous Eddie didn't. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’”
A lot of sheep have passed through our portals but I have never, ever met one as friendly as Eddie. Not only could he eat for England but he could also cuddle for England, I swear he would have stood there all day long if you cared to cuddle him. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’”
Eddie and his soulmate Augie first came to my attention back in April of 2021. The wonderful Irwin family from Norfolk had raised them by hand from lambs but with little or no notice they were told that they had to find somewhere else for them and at such short notice they were surrendered into the care of the most wonderful Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norfolk. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
As it happens, this is where our wonderful Mandy works and whilst they would have had a wonderful life at Hillside, she thought that they would probably be better suited to life at Mirkwood. Barry and Janet were contacted and we set of to collect these gorgeous boys and bring them back to our little bit of paradise. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
They both fitted in from the get-go and were an instant hit with anyone who met them, Eddie in particular was a gentle giant and never complained, he would always meet me at the gate for a handful of nut before I fed the others. He was still eating well and so it came as a bit of a shock when I rocked up this morning to find him no longer with us. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’”
All sheep make their mark but this great big wonderful fella was something else entirely, I won't half miss him and, seasoned old cynic that I am, I can't stop crying at the moment, he was one in a million. My thoughts go out to the wonderful Irwin family who gave him such a good life whilst they could, I know they're going to miss him as much as me and I bet Augie will too though I'll give him some extra cuddles. Sleep tight Eddie boy, going to miss you like crazy. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’”
Now Mr. Grim Reaper, go and take a hike... two in a week is two too many. ๐Ÿ˜ก

*** RIP Squirm 01.04.2010 to 12.01.2025 ***
Yet again my heart is heavy as I have to tell you that another one of our precious little souls got her angel wings today. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Squirm, who's pedigree name is Lightwater Nepeta, joined us back in May of 2018 with four of her flock mates, Squiggle, Nancy, Nelly and Princess from Coxwold in Yorkshire after a successful career in the show-ring. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
It was these five that convinced me to turn what had up until then been a bit of a hobby into an actual thing and so the Mirkwood Rest Home for Retired Sheep was born. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Lightwater Nepeta and Lightwater Nadine arrived in Coxwold when there were children around and as Nadine had a white mark on her head she quickly became Squiggle and her mate became Squirm and the names have stayed with them ever since. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Already the oldest sheep that I have ever had the pleasure of caring for by quite some distance, I was rather hoping that Squirm might make it to fifteen years of age in April but sadly the dreaded arthritis got the better of her a month or two ago and I moved her into the infirmary. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Some sheep take instantly to the sedentary life, I give you Cedric and Holly who are in the infirmary as we speak and who both think that being waited on hand, foot and finger is the best thing since sliced bread but others, and sadly Squirm was an example of this, never quite come to terms with the fact that their legs won't do what they want them to do. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
She had good days and not-so-good days and had recently become restless to the point of injuring herself and so this morning our wonderful vet eased her passage over the rainbow bridge. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ๐ŸŒˆ
Going to miss this little munchkin, she was such a character and could eat for England (but then show me a Ryeland that can't!). Her happy little face would always brighten up my day. Say hello to Squiggle and the others for me, I hope we will meet again one day, sleep tight my little SquirmyWorm. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ ###

The new year brings with it new birthdays, having said that we only have two in January but today we celebrate the 9th birthday of gorgeous Wendy. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
She joined us from Coxwold in Yorkshire, after a successful career in the show-ring, back in May of 2022. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
When she first arrived she was very, very vocal - I messaged Gill to ask if she was always this noisy and got the reply "welcome to Wendy's world"! ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Whether it's contentment or familiarity I don't know but she has mellowed with age and we barely get a peep out of her now. Happy Birthday WendyWoo, I hope we get to spend many more together. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

Baaahhh Fleecebook fwiends, itโ€™s Sirius, techno sheep here and Iโ€™ve managed to get my hooves on Andyโ€™s phone again ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ‘. I overheard dad saying โ€œHappy Ewe Yearโ€ and muttering about needing to be more active in 2025. He sounds a bit mixed up coz first of all every ewe here is already happy and also some of us are boys! I havenโ€™t heard him say โ€œHappy Boy Yearโ€ so why are we being left out? As for being more active, ewe can alway tell when someone is active on Fleecebook coz there is a green dot ๐ŸŸข so Iโ€™m hoping I can help Andy collect more green dot time by pinching his phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŸข. Dad was saying the active bit is going to be his Ewe Year resolution. I shall tell him Iโ€™ll help so long as he calls it his Boy Year resolution, after all we are both chaps and it will be a nice father/son thing to do together ๐ŸŸข๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ด. Andy was also muttering about this being a time when we reflect a lot ๐Ÿง๐Ÿ’ญ. I would like to reflect but we donโ€™t have any mirrors in our sheds ๐Ÿชž. Iโ€™m sure if I โ€œbaahhโ€ nicely dad will get some for us so I can check out my magnificent form ๐Ÿชž๐Ÿ‘. Some of the ewes are elderly and their hair is a little unkempt. Having mirrors will make it easier for them to comb the hay out of their fleeces if they can see what they are doing ๐Ÿชž๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿชฎ. Dadโ€™s been trimming around our eyes which also helps with seeing and keeps us clean & elfy ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘โœ‚๏ธ. He always does it at this time of year and calls it the Christmas trimmings ๐Ÿ‘โœ‚๏ธ๐ŸŽ„. Uh oh, here come Andy looking for his phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ‘ด. Time to go, baahhh bye Fleecebook Fwiends and HAPPY EWE YEAR ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ‰ ###

31/12/2024

And so thanks to each and every one of you who has helped and supported in any way, shape or form, we reach the end of another wonderful year at Mirkwood. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
It has been pretty much a status quo year (no, not Down, Down!) here in 2024. We started the year with 57 sheep and finished the year with 57 sheep having sadly said goodbye to Luna, Sage and Annette but welcoming Xena, Venus and Fraser to the fold. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
No major dramas I'm delighted to say but a lot completed with help from our lovely volunteers. With much help from Barry and Janet we have built a shed to keep our ageing tractor warm and dry. Many folks kindly leant a hand at our two MOT sessions in March and October where we trimmed toenails, wormed and generally pampered all the sheep. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Thanks to Anna, Scott, Mandy, Stacey, Abby, Barry and Janet all of the sheep were sheared with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of care and we even had time for pizzas but still finished in the daylight. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
I managed to get away for three days at the wonderful Vegan Campout and once again I am indebted to Elaine and Rick for looking after the sheep in my absence. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
I am always happy to welcome visitors to see these gorgeous, gentle creatures so if you're ever in the area drop me a message and I'll move heaven and earth to make it happen. I am hoping to get a couple of jobs done next year. Erecting a fence around what used to be the lawn so I can get my sheep hurdles back and constructing a soakaway in the middle of the yard are two jobs I'd love to get done but which I have little or no chance of completing on my own. Don't be shy, you'll be fed and watered and the sheep will make a big fuss of you. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate the help, support and general good wishes from everyone who looks at or uses this page, another year of looking after these wonderful creatures beckons... bring it on! I'm starting to ramble so on behalf of all the residents here, Fraser and I wish you all a very Happy New Year, enjoy your celebrations, we will almost certainly be fast asleep! ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

24/12/2024

Please accept my apologies for the quality of the pictures, I haven't been around today to take any better ones but having said that, the boys and girls rarely venture outside the sheds anyway! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘
We all just want to wish every one of you a very Merry Christmas and thank you all for your help and support this year. There are currently 57 residents here, that's as many as we've ever had and I quite simply couldn't do it without your help be that physically, financially or emotionally... you are what makes this place work. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
I don't want to single anyone out but I'm going to! ๐Ÿ˜‚ A massive thank you goes to my stand-in shepherd Elaine, I haven't been away from the girls and boys much this year but it wouldn't have happened at all without this wonderful lady and her husband, thank you! ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
We're always happy to see visitors and new faces so if you're ever anywhere near this area just come along and say hello (message first please!) and you'll see why these charming, gentle creatures mean so very much to me. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
