Winter is on its way 😱

Here's how you can best prep for the farrier in winter weather:

✅ Make sure Fluffy is clean and dry. Brush off that caked on mud.

❌ Fluffy is not standing in mud or loose ground. A solid, firm, dry surface will yield the best work achieved by your farrier. So your getting your monies worth on high quality hoof care. A cheap flooring solution is a large rubber mat from Bunnings etc. Just make sure Fluffy is well practiced in standing on it.

✅ Take Fluffy's wet rugs off. We would like to remain dry the rest of the day. Dry rugs can stay on to keep Fluffy warm.

✅ Pick out Fluffy's mud balled feet.

✅ Brush/wipe off Fluffy's muddy feet and legs. Make sure you have a good stash of old towels.

❌ Hose legs. Wet legs = Wet farrier. 💧

✅ Provide shelter where possible. Farriers are like cats, we DON'T like getting wet. Have you ever wondered why your farrier stopped returning to your property over winter 🤔

✅ A hot drink. Warm up your farrier with a hot cuppa. You'd be surprised how much we appreciate such a small gesture ☕😍

❌ Have Fluffy and friends hanging out in the paddock upon our arrival. We want to get working straight away so we can get out of the weather. Please have them caught early. 🐴🐴

Trimming with Equissage

Miss Sammy is so much easier to trim whilst having the Equissage, she has a torn pec muscle which is uncomfortable for her during trim sessions, but I have found that by putting the Equissage on 5-10 Min before I start her trim there is no snatching of her legs
And her buddies all enjoy their session as well

If you are having this amount of material removed at each trim cycle then you need to either shorten your trim cycle or get your equine moving more.
Added: After all if we can achieve equilibrium then we maintain balance in the hoof, which maintains balance in the body, which is going to be better for the health of the animal.

Club foot is the result of an unresolved flexural deformity of the distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ). A number of structures of the equine digit are involved in this - test yourself.

Why a short trim cycle is optimum. (4weeks)

1. Small distortions can be managed creating the best balance.
2. Less strain on tendons and ligaments equals comfort.
3. Soreness is reduced as changes are gradual.
4. The horse should not 'look like he needs a trim' the foot should look good through the whole cycle.
5. In the case of bad weather /illness if rescheduling is needed the horses won't suffer by going super overdue.
6. Regular routine maintenance is good for young horses as long visits in between can cause some horses to not stand well.
7. He doesn't look like he needs a trim is a common comment or he's not doing anything so doesn't need one. A trim is a basic need not a luxury.
His feet might look short in the toe breaking away but he may have crushed or high heels and bars etc.
Trim regularly. Book your farrier in well before your horse is due. Keep in touch with your farrier. Confirm as soon as you can or let them know if any changes of address horse numbers etc.
Pick up feet daily scrub with a wire brush. Treat thrush seedy toe and separation- EVERY day - to keep feet free from bacteria especially in wet environments and if movement is lacking.

Acupuncture for recurring abscesses

Meet Freddie. This handsome chap has been having abscesses in all his 4 hooves almost constantly for several months in a row. This has been happening like clockwork 🗓 every year. His owner was very diligent in getting him examined and treated however the abscesses kept recurring and she sought complementary therapy as well. After one acupuncture session Freddie has not had any more abscesses. We will keep an eye on him in the coming months to make sure he stays abscess free but are hopeful due to his positive response so far.
