📊 NRC balanced meal for a 58 pound active dog
• 1990 calories for today
• 1172 grams (2.58 pounds)

🥩 Beef chuck
🦃 Turkey meat
🫀Turkey hearts
🦴 Turkey neck
🐇 Rabbit feet
🌱 Veggie & fruit cubes

💧Vitamin E & D
💊 Manganese

Fed later:
🪺 Quail Eggs
🍠 Cooked sweet potato & quinoa

🤓 Cooked quinoa and sweet potato are beneficial for energy, fiber, macronutrients, and some micronutrients.

There is not enough research on the bioavailability on rabbit fur being a good source of micronutrients, so I do not count this.

Thanksgiving is tomorrow, and I’m sure we all have a family member that likes to slip food to the dog. So be sure to share this with friends and family! If your dog or cat does eat food that they shouldn’t, you’re worried, and your pet is lethargic, puking, or having diarrhea, please seek a veterinarian's help rather than asking around online. I included a positive list so you can have some fun and share a little bit of Thanksgiving food with your pet! 😄

🦃 Raw turkey parts may give your pet an upset stomach if they have never had it before. Feed in small amounts to avoid digestive upset.

🐐🥛 I always have raw goat milk (which contains probiotics) from or on hand in case a dog does get digestive upset from anything, but also to maintain a healthy gut. These can be found at your small local pet food store. Fast adult dogs for 24 hours (skip 2 meals) and feed raw goat milk and fresh water during the day if your dog has diarrhea.

🍽 What would you add to this list?

Hello everyone! I wanted to share three kibble brands I recommend since so many have asked with the news of Mars (maker of Purina, candy bars, and other brands you can find listed on their website) acquiring Champion Pet Foods, the maker of Orijen and Acana. I don’t know what this looks like for the future formulations and sourcing of Orijen or Acana, but some pet owners prefer to be safe than sorry when it comes to their pets diet. Farmina ND, Essence Limited Ingrediet, and Natures Logic Distinction are the brands and lines I recommend.

Use a probiotic powder or raw goat milk (a probiotic source) from brands like or when transitioning foods. Feeding directions are on the labels.

Check out my free “Guide” tab on my page for more information on how to improve your pets kibble diet.

Note: I won’t be monitoring this post and often times people can unknowingly comment inaccurate information on pet diets which leads to arguments, so for those reasons I am turning off the comments. 🤗

💊 Has your pet suffered from diarrhea for a while after being given antibiotics? If so, gut health needs to be restored through pre and probiotics.

🦠 Antibiotics kill good and bad gut bacteria, whereas pre and probiotics can help restore and maintain gut health.

“Probiotics are foods or supplements that contain live microorganisms intended to maintain or improve the "good" bacteria (normal microflora) in the body. Prebiotics are foods (typically high-fiber foods) that act as food for microflora. Prebiotics are used with the intention of improving the balance of these microorganisms.” (Mayo Clinic)

Prebiotics are in foods such as whole grains, bananas, apples, and greens. In addition, probiotics and prebiotics are added to some foods and are available as dietary supplements.

Probiotic sources: raw goat milk and Healthy Pets probiotics powder found on Amazon. Digestive enzyme powder: . Feeding directions can be found on the label of each brand.

Sourcing Tip! 🛒🥩🦴

I am moving across the country (again, I know, but it’s for the last time 😂) and sold my two freezers with all of the meat and bones in it. I used as much meat, bone, and vegetables as I could, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to use it all before I moved. I also needed more room in my moving truck, so I sold the two six-month-old freezers as well, all for $400 in my state's raw feeding Facebook group. That’s a steal if you ask me! 😄 I share this story because there are many deals online, and it’s how I initially found my raw duck bone farmer. Otherwise, I use my local grocery store and some other places here and there. I will caution you not to take all nutritional advice from these groups because it’s unfortunately inaccurate. But these groups can provide helpful meat and bone sourcing information and often have great deals! 🙂

All you have to do is type in a generic term into Facebook, such as “Texas raw feeding group” or something along those lines.

Cute little gingerbread treats for the dogs!🎄

Ingredients:
🌾 Boiled buckwheat (it’s gluten free)
🌰 A pinch of Ceylon cinnamon (also labeled as “true or real” cinnamon)
🎯 A cute mold (this one is from )

“In traditional medicine cinnamon is considered a remedy for respiratory and digestive ailments.” (Ranasinghe P et al)

Benefits of Ceylon cinnamon are:
• Helps reduce inflammation (Gruenwald)
• Stabilizes blood sugar levels (Gruenwald, Shama S et al)
• Has antimicrobial, antibacterial, and anti fungal effects (Roa, Urbankiak)
• Can help improve oral hygiene (Yanakiev)
• Reported to have activities against neurological disorders (Roa)

"In addition to being an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and cardiovascular-disease-lowering compound, cinnamon has also been reported to have activities against neurological disorders." (Rao)

Ceylon cinnamon should be the only cinnamon used and in small amounts (such as a pinch used for these treats) to have enough benefits, but also to not cause harm to your dog by using other cinnamon sources or large amounts.

Balanced raw meal according to NRC guidelines with short explanations of why these ingredients are used:

🦃 Turkey gizzard (adds protein, fat, & other essential nutrients)
🐄 Lean ground beef (protein, fat, & other essential nutrients)
🐖 Pork loin (source of B-vitamins, fat, and protein)
🦆 Duck feet (calcium and phosphorus source which helps with bone and teeth, muscle function, and more)
🐮 Beef liver (meets copper and folic acid requirements)
🌾 Boiled buckwheat (gluten free, adds fiber, 10% total carbohydrates, and some micronutrients)
🟠 Boiled butternut squash (also contributes what buckwheat does on a smaller scale)
🦠 Probiotics (not required, but improves and maintains gut health)
🍄 Mushroom powder (not required, but beneficial to my dogs immune system)
🐟 Fish oil (adds omega-3s, meets requirement of EPA:DHA, and helps skin and coat)
🌿 Kelp (provides iodine requirement and helps with thyroid function)
💊 Zinc (Also found in meat. A supplement was needed for this recipe to balance with copper. Zinc is activator in 200 known enzymes such as protein synthesis and carbohydrate metabolism, skin and wound healing, and immune response)
💊 Vitamin D (supplement helps meet this required nutrient without adding calories. Helps bones, immune system, and interactions and absorption of other nutrients)
💊 Vitamin E (supplement helps meet this required nutrient in the diet and is a biological antioxidant)

Please do not randomly add these supplements without professional help because some are fat soluble and need to be balanced with a meal.

It’s that time of year again! This Holiday season, let your family and friends know about this dangerous yet popular dog treat to avoid. 🎄🦴 🎁

I share this personal experience every year so pet owners can understand the severity of feeding this “treat.” Articles about the dangers of rawhides and what to do if something terrible happens were not on the internet at this time. I once fed this to my dog many years ago, before I knew any better, and quickly learned how dangerous it was. He had a large piece stuck in the back of his throat, and he was choking and coughing. While I do not recommend this in every situation, I stuck my hand in his mouth out of desperation and ended up pulling a long chunk out of his esophagus. If I hadn’t done that, I am positive the situation would have ended badly. There have been many stories like this that didn’t end as well, and dogs have either died or gone through surgery to remove this from their stomach and intestines. More dogs choke on rawhides than any other treat.
For those looking for healthy and natural treat options this Christmas, buy raw meaty bones for your dog's size, freeze-dried products from , and ! You’ll not only be supporting businesses that genuinely care about your pets, but you’ll be feeding your dogs healthy and safe treats!

“Today is the day!
We’re back from vacation and Soph has been so uninterested in her kibble lately, so the timing is perfect. Stopping by 2 butcher shops and Sam’s club today to get the meat for her meals- but starting her out today with her first raw meaty bone!
She took to it right away and LOVED it 🥰

*please consult with a trusted pet nutritionist for sizing recommendations on RMB’s, Soph is an XL breed so I stocked up on turkey necks, duck necks and turkey wings ☺️”

ONE OF THE WORLD'S OLDEST PIT BULLS!

The average life expectancy of a healthy pit bull is around 12 years🐶, however with the breed’s social stigmas and risk factors many sadly don’t make it that long. So when we came across Tigger, a 22 year old pit bull in Waco, Texas, we knew we had to find out more about her for our book, The Forever Dog.🐾

One of the most important factors according to longevity experts is stress, particularly in the home. As a rescue/foster-mom, Julie Morriss had many dogs in and out of her home so “in our house everyone has to have a calm state of mind”. Like many of the other long-lived dogs we met, Tigger was an easy-going and calm dog, and spent most of her days accompanying Julie throughout her day.🚙 And though she was raised mostly on kibble, Tigger always had some sort of fresh food shared with her throughout her life. 🥦🍓🥩

What are some of the changes you’ve made in your pet’s life after reading The Forever Dog? We’d love to hear your comments and takeaways below!

📖You can read more about these long-lived dogs and our suggestions for what you can do to help maximize your dog’s health in our new book: ForeverDog.com

“A little update on how raw feeding is going for those of you that wanted an update after a few months!

Ollie has been on a raw diet for a month and a half, has fully transitioned and is doing really well!

Quick recap: we decided to try raw because he got diagnosed with IBD allergy type. We worked with .nutrition to come up with a customized meal plan and help with balancing everything properly.”

DCM? Grain-free? Taurine?

A few years ago, there was a concern among pet owners about grain-free diets causing heart issues (DCM) in dogs. I continually receive messages asking about this topic. Just today, I had several pet owners tell me their veterinarian says their pet requires grains in their diet. Well, this is not true!

I asked my professor, Dr. Maria Cattai de Godoy, who teaches, studies, and researches companion animal nutrition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, her thoughts on the DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) vs. grain-free diet concern. Dr. Godoy’s research program has three focus areas: 1) ingredient evaluation and foodomics; 2) pet food technology; and 3) therapeutic nutrition. Swipe to see her response on this topic.
