Took a wonderful trip to drop a puppy off in Canada this past week, my niece and Kep tagged along for the ride and we got to check out the falls on the way back. A quick little spring vacation with great food and gorgeous views. Kep made out like a bandit getting eggs Benedict and half my soft serve. I'm very proud of him, he had a bunch of first time experiences and handled it all really well. He didn't bark once the entire trip. Here's to Kep and his most recent two ("O" & "P") litters. He got to meet lots of kids on this trip that wanted to pet "Lassie" which he gleefully accepted. I expect great things from his offspring 😊. Windspun Farm Fibers & OTSC Lanz Hollow Farm

This little girl with a red collar, litter name Ottawa out of Kepper and Oona is available. She's 8.5 weeks old, fully vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, temperament tested etc. She is definitely a working dog temperament and needs an activity. That activity could be agility or could be working on a farm or a different sport. She is people focused and engaged. Food driven and will definitely love to play fetch. She is already climbing over a 4 foot fence.
She is sweet as the day is long. She is also genetically clear if someone is looking for a breeding prospect. Both parents have been DNA tested. Mom is EE yellow so she carries that, tricolor and sable.

She would have been placed but family was looking for a therapy quality dog so jumped to the next litter. Expect a working length coat that is low stress.

Making the rounds again is this great story recorded by Linda Rorem someone I would call a Farm Collie historian. Thanks to Linda these stories can live on and I have to say this one really got me a little misty.

This is the reason I breed.

The old fashioned farm collie was a legend in the early 1900's.

Homer Davenport wrote of the working collie Fly on the Geer farm near Silverton where he lived for some time when he was a boy (the Geers were his mother's family). In a newspaper article in 1907 he related: "I remember once when 'By' Geer and a herder were moving a band of 2500 head of sheep over onto a new range and were driving at night . . . a rain was falling that made the sheep hard to keep together. It was slow work. Fly had been very active. She was covering lots of ground, and it was quite dark. But she worked without orders. She seemed in complete control, and her sharp bark could be heard at intervals. Finally they missed her bark; an hour or so had passed without hearing it. The men were alarmed, as they knew that without her in the dark they would possibly lose a hundred sheep every mile without missing them. They shouted for her, but no Fly. She had gone. They decided that the only thing to do was to stop where they were. They got around their flock as soon as they could and got them bunched. They knew they had let some sheep drop behind and that old Fly was with them. But they thought it was strange she didn't hurry them along, as she was known all over the state as a fast worker. They waited and waited. Daylight came and no Fly. Finally about noon she came with 250 sheep. She was tired and traveling slow. One ewe had given birth to a lamb, and old Fly had gathered it by the back of the neck, as she would carry one of her pups. . . . Thus the faithful old Fly, carrying the lamb too young to walk and keep up, drove her strayed band on until they overtook the first division."
Davenport loved the old-fashioned collie. He wrote in praise of it and was critical of the development of the show-only dog. He even suggested that sheep herding contests for collies be held in conjunction with dog shows, an idea scoffed at by show dog writer James Watson in their "debate" in the Country Life in America magazine in 1908.

I'm obsessed with historical scotch collie content. Anyone else ? I took the liberty of typing this up because the print is very tiny even for my youngish eyes. Here we have a 1920 advertisement from The Country Gentlemen:

"What is a White Scotch Collie Worth? "

"You can buy a collie pup for a few dollars, but they can never measure the value of a grown dog's faithfulness and helpfulness. What is it worth to have your home and babies fearlessly protected, your cows and sheep securely herded, your chickens guarded against marauders, and your orchard and garden watched tirelessly? When you buy a collie pup you buy love unflinching that never dies. A kind word or a few scraps is the only reward his simple testing faithful was expects. Our collies are country raised, pedigree stock, healthy and rugged. A pair will raise 3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ worth of puppies a year. We can furnish unrelated pairs of puppies. State clearly the purpose for which you want a collie and we will write fully about those we have that we think will meet your needs. Island White Collie Kennels, Dept. CG, Oshkosh, Wis. "

What did can we learn from this old ad?

Collies should have a true human bond that is unflinching in their personality, aka a Velcro dog.

They should have good command around a diversified group of livestock and defend against animal intruders.

They should be healthy and robust.

And my personal favorite they should be placed on temperament!

Bonus points for the Flemish Giant rabbitry ad 🐰

Final Roundup. It was fun naming these guys! Fun fact there's only 1 country in the world that starts with an "O". So we got a lot of different types of place names here ! Keeping with our Lanz Hollow Geography theme.

1)Okinawa, biblack female, Irish markings
2)Oxford, tricolor male, Irish markings
3)Ottawa, biblack female, wide blaze
4)Olavarria, biblack female, 5 rear toes (dew claws)
5)Orleans, biblack female, Irish markings
6)Olympia, biblack female, Irish markings
7)Oman, biblack male, Irish markings
8)Oslo, biblack male, Irish markings

Since these guys are SO similar to the untrained eye I ordered some puppy collars that should be coming soon. I usually hold off on collars till they are a bit bigger but we're gonna get the special tiny id ones for the purposes of making everyone's life easier as you follow their progression photos/videos. I'll try to stick with the colors I've already given them.

Most of these pups are white factored. Only Olavarria seems like she might not be, hard to tell. Since Kep and Oona havent produced a white collie in either of these two litters I think it's safe to assume Kep is not white factored. Oona is obviously. It takes two white factored parents to get a color headed white collie.

They're all doing well and Oona is extremely attentive. I'm very happy with her body condition post delivery.

Trying to get out and about a little despite having a knee injury. Collie listening skills are unmatched. I love my dogs and I love being able to take them out on the farm and enjoy a little fun. I would normally take them hiking into the woods but the deer have been stopping by lately and I don't need a chase right now with my hobbling self (hence Gwynen on a short anti pull get up).
I frequently ask my dogs to get up into the trailers and beds of trucks so that if I need to move a vehicle or a vehicle is moving around us I know where the dogs are at all times up high and safe, this is a practical command for us. What practical commands do you use for your dogs that make sense for your lifestyle that someone else might not use?
( all dogs here are registered Scotch Collies)

I've been struggling with how to write this post as I like to keep everyone informed about the going ons in my kennel/Farm but I also like to keep things positive and on the topic of collies. This is neither of those things so if you have a soft heart or stomach this is your TW to scroll away.

Last week on Wednesday I got a call from a very close friend of mine that a dog they had rescued the day before was in need of immediate help, after receiving pictures of said dog and a small bit of info I decided to go get her and get her vetted asap. Her name is Ocean and best guess is she's 2 yo. Labrador mix (maybe boxer, maybe corso, maybe Doberman) she'd been starved within an inch of her life and was in a bad situation. I reached out immediately to Suffield Veterinary Hospital who got me the fastest appointment to have her evaluated.

The long term psychological and physical effects from starving can't keep a good dog down. She is sweet and loving and patient. Ocean has gone through turbulent times and has come out on the otherside. Thankfully her blood work looked amazing given her original condition and she's on the road to recovery right now. There are people in the world who are in a bad way themselves and can't care for their animals, they should be turned over to shelters to care for them. I am not a big fan of many rescues BUT a fed dog is certainly preferable to a starved dog. This girl is genuinely a good girl. She's not up for adoption, Lanz Hollow is not a rescue, I just want to keep everyone aprised that we have a dog on premises that is in recovery from emaciation so they know what's up when visiting during our typical puppy hours.

Sometimes in breeding things don't work out the way you would like. I kept back little V***n here from the Finley/Gwynen litter hoping this line breeding would double down on Finley and Gwynen's wonderful traits of confidence, friendliness and workability. Unfortunately although V***n is beautiful, wonderful size, working style coat and obedient her temperament is otherwise not suited to our breeding program. She is exceedingly shy.

Despite having met a lot of people during her formative months there have been more than a few times when she's been startled by dogs or small kids and fled the scene. She is reminiscent of her other grandmother Marigold, who I retired after two breedings because she neither liked the act of breeding nor did she get on with kids, she was indeed startled and scared by them. Wishing to not continue this, I made the call to have V***n spayed today. As breeders it is our job to breed the best of the best, some quirks here or there can be worked around but if we want to further the old time scotch collie group as a whole we really need to be willing to put the breeding before the profit and make hard decisions sometimes.

V***n is therefore looking for a new home. She is 11 months old. Up to date on shots , heartworm, has a Seresto collar. She's gone through her first heat and is currently at the vet being spayed. She is looking for a home with adults / or adults/teenagers, with a slower pace of life. She is dog friendly but scared of meeting new dogs at first. She needs a lot of patience. I would ideally like her placed in a home with a fenced back yard and a slower lifestyle, she is not a dog park kind of girly. She is absolutely sweet and when bonded to you will crawl into your lap. She is on the smaller side 38lbs, knows several commands and would be a walk in the park for someone who is single and looking for a companion. Would not be adverse to a home with a slow older dog or a cat. She is very submissive.

Que reaction to her seeing a dog walk into the vet today: immediate dive under the bench where she glued herself. Not a leash princess but also extremely biddable and not a puller unless startled, (still has no pull power, ifykyk).
