Remembering those early flower farming summers when I would pack our little Honda full of buckets every week for local florists and CSA subscribers. It was a crazy puzzle fitting it all but we made it work!

Soft summer blooms blend perfectly with patterned dresses, crystal-blue water and golden light. It was one of those beautiful late August days – blue skies and a warm breeze, and family and friends relaxing and laughing by the lake before the wedding began.

A special wedding flower story from a couple years ago... The bride's mom asked me, before the wedding, if I would be able to save some flowers from the event and create something for the bride, Hailey, as a surprise and keepsake. So I saved and dried most of the flowers and some foliage from the 12-foot hanging garden in the reception tent, and later created a large 32-inch wreath (swipe to see the hanging garden).

Stories like this are what I remember about certain weddings, even years later. Anytime I can be part of a surprise imbued with thoughtfulness and love...count me in.

Moody fall colors in a summer bouquet...feels like the right vibe for early November. About half of the flowers and textures here are perennials, which is just one more thing that makes every bouquet so unique.

This is digging season: garlic cloves go in, while dahlia tubers and gladiolus corms and carrots come out. It's the last good dirt-and-wheelbarrow labor time until spring. Even in cool weather, this kind of work keeps you warm.

A handful of fresh, fragrant fall blooms to enjoy indoors, as this beautiful warm weather is sure to fade into colder days soon. We just returned from three weeks of vacation with jet lag and head colds, which makes me glad I did many of the essential fall garden tasks before our trip. I still have plenty of time to dig tubers and plant garlic before the real cold weather takes hold. For now I'm enjoying seeing what's still blooming and which pollinators are still abuzz, and gathering seeds to scatter somewhat intentionally, though hopefully not where I'll regret them in the spring.

This late summer aerial view of our urban flower farm makes me think there should be sheep grazing in the green grass at top (not our property). It's so darn pastoral from this perspective.

I grew quite a few new flower varieties this year, but these 'Madame Butterfly Cherry Bronze' snapdragons weren't one of them. These have been on my must-grow list for a few years. That ombre coloring, plus the ruffled petals and tall stems – perfection.

These aren't flowers, but I think they're equally as beautiful. I still grow a handful of vegetable crops for enjoyment, companion planting and winter storage – and onions are always on the list. It wouldn't feel like late summer / early fall without the ritual of harvesting, curing, trimming and storing onions. Other veggies I can't do without: tomatoes, garlic, carrots, snap peas and lettuce. What are your vegetable must-haves?

Peachy pinks were a popular color this summer, and I'm all about that! I love the warmer tones. I'm also grateful to the other local flower growers who helped me fill in some gaps here and there this season – with peachy dahlias in the first bouquet from and a stunner dahlia and a few soft yellow and blush cosmos in the second bouquet from . Everything in my design work is always 100 percent local, which I think makes a wedding bouquet feel more special and ephemeral, plus it keeps me from getting bored. Every year I grow a slightly different mix of flowers, and nature keeps me on my toes by delivering new surprises every season.

It's been a while since I shared an introduction post, so here's a bit about me...

I've been growing cut flowers for almost 10 years, but it wasn't my intended career path. I actually worked in a flower shop before college, and then got a bachelor's in English writing and subsequently worked in publishing as a copy editor and web editor, then in local government, and then got a master's in library science and worked as a professional librarian. During my first few years of flower farming I was a web editor again and also worked in marketing. I didn't love all those jobs but I still use so much of what I learned along the way, and I'm glad to have a lot of experience in different kinds of work environments – corporate, government, nonprofit, small business.

These days I focus on growing flowers and designing for weddings using only local flowers – it's really gratifying to be hands-on through the entire process, from sowing seeds all the way to delivering and setting up on the day of a wedding. I've been lucky to work with so many wonderful clients who are excited about having local, seasonal flowers as part of their wedding.

Those who know me know that I need lots of snacks, will happily geek out over insects and compost and spreadsheets, and will grow almost any flower if it's in the peachy/orange color family.

A texture-filled soft neutral palette for my final wedding of the season, just as the summer warmth slips into feeling very much like fall. Congrats to Kelsey & Justin!

Summer mornings in the garden are coming to an end, but images like this take me right back. This space is less than a quarter acre but can produce SO many blooms in just a few months. I'm already looking forward to the quieter winter season so I can plan what to grow next year.

Just one slice of the perfect soft color palette for an end-of-summer wedding. Feverfew and didiscus are such a fun combination of playful and delicate, and I can't wait to see the full array of flowers come together for this event.
