Quinn looking adorable at Scheels while shopping after her field trip class. When she arrived home, she was exhausted after meeting so many people at the mall. Then we have the youngest permanent puppy in our house, and the oldest, from seven months to eight years old, Hudson and Stitch, getting along perfectly! Lastly, Ruby is huge and ready for pups next week, 12/23 or 12/24.

We are excited to announce our “oopsie litter” from Willow and Paxton. All girls! 2 black brindle and 2 gray fawns. Hot pink female has an extremely small cleft hard pallet; so small they almost missed it and almost forgot to tell me. She will need to be tube fed for now. Clefts can happen in any breed but supplementing with folic acid prior to breeding and during pregnancy can help prevent clefts but it’s not fool proof. Since it was not our intention for Willow to have another litter, we did not start folic acid early. Here’s hoping she makes it and that it closes on its own. Mama Willow is enjoying motherhood again and is scheduled for spay surgery February 10th. The puppies weigh 7,8,9 & 11 oz each.

So Stitchy, my oldest Frenchie now at age 8, has decided to be a puppy again and be naughty. Partially my fault. He is not crated but rather he is “roomed.” He, along with Angel and Willow have a room in our home that is all theirs. They even have a run with a dog door to go outside whenever they want. And they do get to rotate throughout the day to be with us and to be in other rooms and to be in other runs. However, with the puppies and going to the vet multiple times waiting for Willow‘s puppies to be born and figuring out the problems with Sunny, and getting ready for Christmas, and training some of the dogs, I’ve been very busy and off schedule, not that I ever have a strict schedule. So Mr. Stitch, who is Chance’s grandpa, decided to fluff my office chair twice (as you can see tape from the first time), and destroy a tissue box with the basket around it! Err. I can’t blame him though because his routine is off and he is bored because it’s winter and I don’t have him in a crate so it’s my fault. But Stitchy, you can stop anytime now please!

UW Madison called today and they have preliminary results on the autopsy completed on Spartacus. He had quite a bit of cancer growing with a tumor at the top of his heart. It’s very uncommon for this type of cancer to spread, but it did spread to his liver and spleen, and they believe his spleen ruptured, and he bled into his belly. This was not a painful death, he just wasn’t receiving enough oxygen and he simply passed out, fell asleep, and that led to him passing away without enough oxygen in his system. However, I still am amazed, he waited for his boy to come home from college, eat his meal, and then pass away. What an incredible trooper. He was never used for breeding in case anyone worried about that. He contributed greatly to canine cancer research at UW Madison for 5 years. They are extremely happy they were able to study him before and after his passing. It is unknown until the study is complete, if Spartacus was receiving the placebo or the real canine cancer preventive vaccine. We will meet again Spart the Fart, over the rainbow bridge. 🌈

So we have a quick announcement. Willow was to be spayed this fall but went into heat before our appointment. Paxton who has never ever figured out how to breed naturally, jumped two 42” fences to get to Willow. Only one tie and the vet said we could do an immediate spay which would get rid of any babies. I felt what is meant to be is meant to be even though she does not need another litter. So she is due on Friday or Saturday of this week, but the vet didn’t think she had more than one baby and the look of her size looks like there might be more. She does have an appointment for eight weeks out for an immediate spay appointment. This was a big oopsie!

Sunny update: the vet clinic got us in right away this morning. Bloodwork, ultrasound, etc. Her uterus hasn’t contracted fully or it’s still swollen, she is anemic from the blood loss and her body hasn’t caught up yet. Her calcium levels are good but they encouraged more calcium intake. She’s on puppy safe antibiotics and more meloxicam that is safe for the puppies too (given for pain after a c-section normally). To get more iron in her we soaked freeze dried beef liver in puppy formula and she really enjoyed that with a side of scalloped potatoes and venison. Hopefully she is headed in the right direction.

I’m just sick about this, but we lost the red collared puppy overnight. She appeared to regurgitate and aspirate. I’ve never lost a Frenchie puppy after taking them home from the vet. I’m devastated. The 5 remaining are doing well.

The puppies are starting to nurse but we still have to supplement with formula. Sunny seems to be doing well but seemed to be extra sleepy and in pain tonight so we will monitor and maybe see the vet tomorrow if needed. Hudson went to his first field trip class and it was the first time for him in a store. It was a little bit scary, but then towards the end he started to relax and started shopping. 🛍️ 🤣🦴

Success! We have milk and she will sit for a bit. The other four puppies were tube fed again because I try every puppy and she finally let these two eat. But what a little princess since she has to be laying in a soft cushy bed.

Sunny is home and interested in the puppies! She started eating and drinking right away. Catheter is still in just in case of an emergency. I learned how to flush the catheter today and have to do that every 4-6 hours to prevent a clot from occurring. If all goes well she will have it removed tomorrow. Only 4 trips to the vet today! I was there when they opened around 7 am and when they closed around 5 pm. Long day for all!
