“Death follows minutes to hours after exposure to a small amount of this toxin." As the weather gets hotter, ponds can start to have "algae blooms." The water itself can look like pea soup, or like green paint is spread on the surface of the water. Some of these blooms are cyanobacteria, which can produce potent toxins. Many dogs are exposed when they wade in the water and either drink the water directly, or lick it off themselves when they come out. There is no antidote; treatment is supportive and many dogs don't survive. If your dog gets into a pond like this, bathe him immediately. If he has any symptoms, bring him right in to a veterinarian. See comments for more information about signs and treatment. (Many ponds that look like this are not dangerous, but it is not possible to tell which ones are toxic and which ones aren't except by having the water tested; therefore, it is safest to keep your pets out.)

Iowa regularly tops the list for the number of USDA facilities that have violations. Sadly, 37% of those violations in Iowa during the quarter pertained to veterinary care, the attending veterinarian or inadequate veterinary care. Our puppy mills are selling online and to pet stores all over the country.

We need consumers to either adopt from reputable adoption agencies or to research before they buy. Because the public is truly funding the cruel and inhumane puppy mill industry through their purchases.

On April 12, the Norwalk Police Department responded to a potential animal neglect case at a home in the 2200 block of Windflower Drive. The police department and the Animal Rescue League rescued 57 dogs and three cats from the home. They also found seven dogs deceased inside the home.

The animals were living in f***s and filth, and some were caged. Many are suffering from multiple medical conditions like fleas, loss of fur, mange, cloudy eyes, and various cuts and injuries that require medical treatment, the ARL said.

ANIMAL NEGLECT ARREST

On August 24, 2023, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship in regards to animal welfare concerns at 3027 540th St SW, Riverside. The Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship authorities were conducting an inspection at a commercial dog breeding facility, Sunset Valley Farm, owned by Loren Yoder. During the inspection, a large number of dogs were discovered to be neglected.

Yoder surrendered all of his 131 dogs to the care of Iowa City Animal Services. Thorough physical exams conducted by assisting veterinarians determined many dogs had developed conditions caused by failure to adequately care for the animals. These conditions then caused unjustified distress, suffering, and pain to the affected animals. Yoder surrendered his commercial breeding license through the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship

On March 6, 2024, Loren Yoder, 62, Riverside, was arrested and charged with the following criminal charges:

• 5 counts of Animal Neglect – 717B.3(4) (Serious Misdemeanor)
• 36 counts of Animal Neglect – 717B.3(3) (Simple Misdemeanor)

Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Iowa City Animal Services, Johnson County Emergency Management, and Johnson County Attorney’s Office.

Disclaimer: a criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

POCAHONTAS COUNTY RESCUE UPDATE: Jennifer Sproston, 51, of Rolfe, has been arrested and charged with 34 counts of Animal Neglect in the case of the 30 cats who were left in a f***s-filled home with no food and no water. The cats and kittens are continuing to recover under the care of the ARL’s two staff veterinarians and the rest of our Miracle Medical Team.

ORIGINAL STORY

HELP NEEDED: The ARL’s Mobile Rescue Team spent hours removing 30 cats and kittens from a home in Pocahontas County after being asked by local law enforcement to assist. The cats and young kittens had been left by their owner -- shut in a hot, filthy house, without any food or water.

When our team arrived at the house, 2 hours from our main shelter, the smell of urine hit them immediately. Temps had been in the upper 80s and 90s, the house had no electricity, and very little light was coming in. F***s, urine and trash covered the floors, stairs, and even some countertops. In one closet area, a layer of f***s nearly an inch thick covered the floor. These cats needed help and they needed it now.

Our team got to work with flashlights in the stifling heat and began rescuing the cats and kittens throughout the house one by one, including some who were hiding inside a mattress. They didn’t know we were there to save them. They didn’t know their lives were about to change forever.

After making sure all were safe in carriers, we made the long drive back to the ARL, where our Emergency Care Team was waiting to assess them to determine their treatment plans.

Many of the cats and kittens are thin, with ear mites, ear infections, fleas and skin infections. Two mama cats were nursing litters of kittens only a couple of weeks old. There is no way they would have survived much longer in that heat and in that filth, without any food or water.

The investigation into this case is ongoing.

In this already busy kitten season, with 30 more cats and kittens in our care after being rescued from terrible conditions, we need your support now more than ever. To help, just use the button with this post, go to https://bit.ly/3ysIwUE to give on our website, or give via Venmo -Iowa.
