Teenage grey seals, aged 2-4, form age-based social groups that foster interaction and bonding. Subadults are highly social at haul-out sites, where they stick with peers their own age and engage in playful activities like mock hunting, pretend mating, and play-fighting to build skills for adulthood. This structured socialization helps them learn behaviors, establish hierarchies, and prepare for adult life.

Before the 1980s, gray seals were far less common than they are now, The invasion likely began when immigrants arrived from the UK’s expanding colonies. Between 1980 and 2010, UK pup numbers grew from 1,617 to 10,107, possibly increasing dispersal into nearby regions. Some seals established breeding sites, while others only visited temporarily. Since 2000s, the population of grey seals in the region has seen significant changes reflecting broader trends in marine wildlife conservation and habitat recovery.

Due to human expansion in the late Middle Ages, gray seal pups were vulnerable to hunters while ashore during nursing and postweaning. Increased hunting pressure nearly wiped out the species in the region, although small populations survived in remote UK areas. Legal protections, such as the 1914 Gray Seals Protection Act, enabled their recovery and eventual recolonization of the Wadden Sea and nearby areas.

Something to think about
In male grey seals, body size plays a key role in their success at mating and fathering pups. Researchers found that males with medium body sizes mated with the most females and had the most pups. This is because medium-sized males seem to have the best balance of strength and agility, which helps them win fights and compete for mates. While larger males have more endurance, they may be less agile, and smaller males may not be strong enough to compete.
So, being not too big and not too small seems to be the sweet spot for success!😙

Grey seal pups, like other phocids, are born with a white lanugo, shed at weaning weeks later. Since lanugo isn't waterproof, births must occur above the high water mark. It insulates the pup until thicker blubber develops during lactation.
