True seals vibrissae, or whiskers, play a crucial role in seal orientation and survival, especially in dark and turbid waters.

Most true seals have approximately 44 mystacial vibrissae (located on the snout), exactly one rhinal vibrissa, and usually 5 supraorbital vibrissae (above the eyes) per side.

True seals are typically born with a complete set of vibrissae. These vibrissae are essential for newborn seals to navigate and locate their mother, as well as to begin exploring their environment shortly after birth.
