As we prepare to launch our adoption special this Thursday, August 24, we have an ⭐️important health update⭐️ that may impact your plans to adopt a dog.
Some of the dogs in our care are showing symptoms of upper respiratory infections (URI): coughing (either dry or productive), sneezing, fatigue, and in rare cases, fever. While the cause of these symptoms is unknown, it is likely due to the bacterial infection called Bordetella, also known as kennel cough. As the name implies, kennel cough can spread rapidly among animals kept in close contact to one another, such as at boarding facilities, or in our case, inside the shelter.
And if this were not enough, 💥WE ARE OUT OF ROOM IN OUR KENNELS.💥 Out of an abundance of caution...
• If you are planning to adopt a cat or kitten, please proceed to do so! Bordetella in dogs is NOT contagious to cats. 🐱
• If you are planning to adopt a dog and do NOT have another dog in your home, please come and adopt! If you are concerned about URI, our medical staff will go over what to watch out for and send you home with antibiotics, just in case.
• If you want to adopt a dog and already have a dog at home, please refrain from adopting at this time, and please do not bring your dogs to the shelter for meet and greets until further notice.
• If you need to surrender a dog, we ask that if at all possible, you please delay your plans for 2-3 weeks.
The shelter’s veterinarian is treating all the dogs impacted by this illness with antibiotics, and like human respiratory infections, most cases should resolve within 10-14 days.
