Untamed

Untamed Adventure Dogs A place to share the adventures. Welcome to my Untamed blog. After graduating college in 2012 I was able to start building my own family of pets!

Untamed was designed 6 years ago when I saw a need for custom training for the adventurous owner and dog(s). I began training in 2009 (horses and dogs – ok maybe a few other species as well!) with a focus on socialization, and behavior modification. I have always had a passion for helping dogs and owners develop their relationships whether it was getting off to the right start, or fixing stressful

and troublesome behaviors. I immediately began networking with my local training colleagues because I wanted to fully immerse my dogs into training. Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed in what dog training classes had to offer. Most dog owners are not interested in pursuing competitive agility, obedience, rally etc and this is where Untamed was born. I wanted a way for dog owners to take guided lessons simply to build their relationship with their dog. For each family this was different. But the common motivation was that owners wanted a dog that was manageable and capable of being fully immersed in their active life. It was exactly what I myself (the owner of 2 energetic huskies) was seeking as a dog owner and trainer. So I changed my outlook as a trainer. The next thing that happened was magical. I stopped focussing on sit, stay and started asking my dogs what THEY wanted. When they pulled on the leash – instead of asking them to stop I put a harness on and let them pull harder. When they ripped up my carpet I didn’t yell or take away their freedom – I gave them cardboard boxes to shred and pop bottles filled with food to destroy. What was happening was instead of trying to get my dogs to think like a human, I was learning how to think like my dogs. It worked. I unleashed their untamed spirit and satisfied their natural desires. In return the dogs began asking me what THEY could do for me. So I designed programs that build that team – style bond: Hiking with your dog, Obstacle course training, canoeing and kayaking with your dog, bikejor, canicross, sledding, camping, mountaineering, movie and film training – the possibilities were endless.

So far this spring/summer has been very busy which is why I haven’t been posting frequently. Today Rune welcomed 7 beautiful puppies into the world. Each of these puppies has been spoken for for a very long time and will be joining loving small teams in mushing, and sports. They were bred for amazing drive and performance in not just mushing, but everything that I have asked of them wether it be tricks, agility, stunts, fast cat, etc while also maintaining lovely temperaments that are livable in the home. I am so excited to watch them develop!

A beautiful evening to Walk and forage. Just like nature intended for our species. Wild garlic, and violets. There is so many resources in our own back yards. I’m so thankful to have had a mom and grandparents who taught me the basics of foraging food. Isn’t it interesting that growing up we were literally trained to be consumers. Home economics etc. how to “spend smart”. Can you imagine if each and every one of us were taught how to recognize natural foods? Or how to plan a vegitable garden or raise a few chickens? Imagine how different of a world we would live in. We certainly wouldn’t be as reliant on big buisness as we are without those skills.

Our feel good story of the week. A true testimony of the love a musher has for their dog, and the resilience of a dog that loves to run 🖤

From our friend LISA:

Xena’s story
Whoever said diamonds were a girl’s best friend never owned a dog. This is my girl and best friend, Xena. In 2020 she was diagnosed with Cruciate Ligament Disease and required two TPLO (Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy) surgeries; one for each knee. I first noticed something was wrong when she started limping. I could see something was off. Even though the vet initially did not see anything wrong on our first visit, I knew something just wasn’t right. A few days passed and it was obvious to me that something was still wrong. I took her to the vet again and had her x-rayed. That is when she was diagnosed with Cruciate Ligament Disease. I was then informed that it is affecting both of her knees. I learned that limping can appear suddenly during or after exercise in some dogs, or it may be progressive and intermittent in others. When I found this out, it broke my heart. I was very emotional and overwhelmed by this news. The surgeries were quite expensive. I love my dog and have always wanted her to live her best quality of life. When we discovered Xena need surgery, she was a very active, happy, four-year young girl. She makes myself and many other people smile. We both have fires in our bellies for being active! Everywhere I go, people recognize us and are always interested in what we are doing. We love adventures! We love walking, running, biking, hiking, exploring, swimming, agility, and cuddling. in previous years, we participated in ”Walk for Dog Guides”, completed the CNIB Guide Dogs Pup Crawl, Pawsitive Fitness, Ironpaws, and volunteered with Hanover Trails ‘Eyes and Ears’. I want to continue this for many years with her. Xena does too. Non-surgical management was not recommended for Xena. Dogs greater than 30 pounds have a very poor chance of becoming clinically normal with non-surgical treatment. The success rate for this surgery is over 90% and performance dogs are expected to return back to their regular activities after surgeries. If left unattended, fraying of the ligament triggers a cascade of events resulting in knee pain and lameness. At a critical point of fraying, the CrCL loses its normal mechanical function and painful lameness is accompanied by a mechanical lameness. I wanted to prevent this.
On January 25, 2021 Xena had her left leg TPLO surgery. It was done seven weeks after her right leg which was done previously on December 8, 2020.
March 5th 2021 was the five-week mark from her second surgery and we were excited and yet patiently waiting to be able to get approved to start 15-20 minute-controlled leash walks.
Xena was scheduled for more X-rays on April 12, 2021.
We followed all the protocols and hoped to get the go ahead to slowly be able to get back into our regular routines and lifestyle.
We received the all clear from our vet and had a long recovery to build her muscle back up.
We were committed. We worked on building her strength back, range of motion exercises as well as some hydrotherapy.
As mentioned previously the success rate for this surgery is over 90% and performance dogs are expected to return back to their regular activities after surgeries. I was skeptical, but here we are! We are back, ready to go, stronger than ever and loving every minute.
We still love walking, running, biking, hiking, exploring, swimming, agility, sledding, and cuddling
Xena is my lead dog, point, team and wheel dog. She is my all in one!
The bond I have with Xena is one I can not explain in words. She is my best friend and has been there for me through thick and thin.
Xena came to me 8 years ago. Her journey has been up and down as well. She is the strongest dog mentally and physically that I know. She is playful, kind, gentle, determined, motivating, loving, dramatic a little wild and sometimes loud!
We are the perfect match.
I am beyond words for how proud I am of her and everything she has overcome and does daily!
She is absolutely perfect! ❤
Check out those legs and the need for speed!

Today hurts. More than I ever could have expected. A year ago today my life changed forever. I will never be the same. The new me is nervous, scared, and sad often. I’m triggered by the smallest noises and situations. I have days where I’m good one minute and destroyed the next.

One year ago I made a mistake that resulted in my dog being shot. I was loading my dogs into my van to go for a hike and my beautiful Marla slipped out the door. I chased her screaming her name. She ran down a driveway and I wasn’t fast enough. She was shot. Not 100ft from me.

I still hear my own voice calling her name. I still can see Marla looking back at me and then running. I can still hear the gunshot. I can still feel the blood on my shirt and pants. I can still feel the weight of Marla in my arms as I carried her home sobbing. I can still see her face… I can still feel the pain. I can still feel the guilt. I can still feel the anger that was deep in my soul, and the anger I still have deep within me toward myself.

Every day I am angry. That one of my neighbors had a pack of German shepherds that were killing all of our chickens and running loose 24/7 making everyone on my road paranoid. I am angry that the dog warden in my town did absolutely nothing. His excuse was that the guy was a veteran so I guess he can get away with breaking the law having 7 unlicensed dogs without containment. Because nothing was done my other neighbor didn’t think first and shot Marla. He said if he knew it was one of my dogs he wouldn’t have done it. Those loose dogs got to live even after killing over 30 of my birds. My dog paid for their crime.

Today I am asking that if anyone had a spare 10$ to please donate to the Niagara SPCA. Not only is this where I adopted my beautiful Marla, but they are the ones when my dog warden failed to do his job they showed up to investigate. Because of the spca the idiot and his dogs are now gone. When the town failed the nspca cleaned up the mess. The nspca also wept with me when they found out what happened to my beautiful girl.

My life is forever changed. I will never be the person I was 1 year ago again.

My most handsome Lycan. Have to thank my friend Tj for making me this awesome poster of him! Lycan is my shadow, and my lead dog. He is glued to my side, and will do anything for me. He is the dog that gives me high expectations for all the dogs I bring into my life. He also produced phantom who is an incredible and stunning sled dog. I think all of Lycans pups have experience leading their new teams (8 pups). So I do believe he is worth having a poster 🖤🐺.

Had an incredible time in south river Ontario last weekend! Ran the most technical fast trail I’ve ever been on. Unfortunately day 2 I slammed my knee on tree full speed and injured my knee pretty good. But I still had a great time and look forward to getting back on my runners!

Senior dogs Nova and Ghost had a fun day running and leading with our friend and her two pups atlas and Ico. Even tho they are “race retired” they still love going out for little adventures. Keeping them happy and healthy is top priority of course so you will see here they got massages, stretches, warm soup, pets from all their friends and generally the royal treatment 💕

I decided to make an album that shows what the pack is doing when they are not in harness running. It seems like any time I post a mushing video I’m accused of keeping my dogs on 2 ft chains, and never letting them do anything else.

I’m going to start with views from the play yard and the house. We spend a lot of time playing together in the yard. They keep me active outside! If I’m home, we’re typically in the yard playing or relaxing. In the winter it’s typical to see them sprinting through the snow and rough housing. When we are inside we are doing a lot of cuddling and just hanging out. Because they play hard outside they have amazing off switches in the house. Next I will post some of the activities we do in the off season together!

We got a little snow storm in his weekend so we decided to make the most of it and pull the sled out for an adventure! They had a blast!

My dogs this am when I pulled out the sled for the first time this year 😂

07/01/2024

There is a group of people who think that sled dogs are forced to run. What we say to that is “you can’t push a rope” as demonstrated by my team here.

**edit to clarify - yes they are waiting a long time here. I’m not recording. I was helping other teams hook up so we could safely take off. No waiting is not ideal but sometimes it is necessary for safety**

Racing Siberian huskies are incredibly driven to run from thousands of years of selective breeding. It can still be seen in pet bred Siberians because it’s so strong in their genetics. To deny a dog an outlet for their inner instincts is incredibly unfair and cruel. To tell these dogs they can no longer run would be devastating.

The same arguments will likely pop up in the comments “sled dogs are unloved” “sled dogs have no life except running” “sled dogs are housed in inhumane ways” “sled dogs are forced to run for your enjoyment” “sled dogs would be just as happy on a couch” “sled dogs are horribly abused” “sled dogs are not socialized”

Don’t fall for that. Dont fall for the photos and videos that have zero context and are just orchestrated to pull on your heart strings. Ask questions first. Dont jump to accusations.

These dogs are some of the healthiest, happiest, loved animals on the planet. As I write this my 7 sled dogs are cuddling on the couch with me chewing on expensive chews. They get the finest vet care, grooming, supplements and expensive food. They get to go to public demonstrations, come out with me to stores, hike, canoe, backpack, do sports, get to play outside together for hours per day as well as sleep on my bed.

Most importantly they get all my love.

It’s been raining non stop 24/7 for over a week. Feeling really thankful and lucky to have had aunt Sue and Mike drop off a load of mulch so I can at the very least give my dogs and chickens a little bit of dry ground. Feeling really burned out with this weather lately. Ugh. So much for a lawn. Welcome to the untamed playground.

Stretching is an important part of workout warm up and recovery - especially when it’s cold out and the dogs are running in an “explosive” manner. This prevents soft tissue strain and injuries as well as creates an opportune moment to potentially identify sore areas. Here’s my girl nova who loves to run! Her favorite is longer slower runs. Occasionally she over does it and strains her hip flexors/illiopsoas. To keep my 10 year old girl fit and happy she gets stretching before and after runs, a warm up walk, and massage after she runs. Nova also receives Cosamin ASU, an omega fatty acid supplement, and adequan injections to preserve her joints. There is so much we can do to keep our dogs happy and comfortable into their senior years so they can continue doing what they love!

We so often talk about what goes into finding an ethical and quality breeder/dog but I want to talk for a moment about something that is just as, if not more important when diving into the world of dog sports, breeding, etc.

Finding a quality mentor.

“Some of the responsibilities of mentors are: to provide guidance, advice, feedback and support to the mentee. As well as serving as their role model, teacher, counselor, advisor, sponsor, advocate and ally. You will provide them with all their tools to be able to become a better version of themselves.”

* Good listener/sounding board
* Flexible
* Value diversity of perspectives
* Knowledgeable
* Nonjudgmental
* Able to give constructive feedback
* Honest and candid
* Able to network and find resources
* Successful
* Willing/able to devote time to developing others
* Eager to learn
(University of Arizona)

This is info from several professional mentorship programs I found online that really defined what “quality mentorship is”
Just like unethical breeders there are poor choices for mentors out there as well that can absolutely set their mentee up for failure.

So what can you do to ensure you are choosing a quality mentor to help build your program?

1.) look at this persons success. Has this person found success in what you are trying to achieve? Can you find someone who’s had better success? Has this person walked your path? Are they at least a stepping stone to your success?

2.) Has this person had success building other mentees to their level of success?

3.) Is this person willing to have an open mind and continue their own personal growth and education? Because nobody is perfect and learning continues…. Forever. This person should be constantly looking for new techniques, methods, literature etc.

4.) is this person well respected in their activity/sport/etc? Have they built a positive community through their program?

Ultimately a good mentor strives to see their mentees become their biggest competitors… and loves every second. So chose wisely, and set yourself up for a positive mentorship experience with someone you can trust with your success!
