We are SO EXCITED and SO PROUD of this little boy right here. Sterling is officially a SERVICE DOG!!!! He passed the BC Guide and Service Dog Certification test today with his mom with 100%👏👏👏 This is the first pup we’ve helped get certified so we are very very very proud to see these results. Go Team Sterling!!

We’ve been working with Sterling since January earlier this year so it’s been 11 months of hard work. 3x a week we saw Sterling for about 4 months straight and then 2x/week, 1x/week and then sporadically. His mom takes him absolutely everywhere she goes and has since she adopted him at 1 yo. We started with a dog who was comfortable in public, which meant we just needed to teach him structure, and he made our job very easy because he loves to work and learn!!

We loved every visit to Sterling we had, and are so sad he’s moving all the way to Costa Rica😭😭😭 but we will for sure see him again in the future😍

We’re focusing on new locations with Rex in shorter sessions. Rex gets verrryyy excited when in a new location so we’re going to bring him around more to make it less exciting.
If your dog isn’t interested in working with you, don’t force it!
Rex loves working and is very eager to learn, so when we show up to a spot to do that and he doesn’t want to… we don’t force it. He’s not having fun and we’re not having fun. Instead of making it a miserable experience for everyone, we’ll take a step back on the training aspect, and let him do what he wants. When he’s ready to work, he’ll let us know.
Over the next three weeks we’ll be taking him out more times per week, in shorter periods, and hope that what takes him now 20 minutes to get ready to work, takes less than 5.
Dogs aren’t robots, and we always keep that in mind. Rex has lots of feelings, and is scared of being approached by humans, and overexcited by dogs he sees on leash- you can’t rush a dog in changing their emotions! Every dogs journey looks differently, so it’s about finding what works for them.

P.S. isn’t he adorable? 🥹

Rex is coming along, learning better habits around triggers! We’ve been working with him in short sessions almost every day for just over a week now and he’s been trusting us to be there for him when he’s stressed more and more!

Once he’s got a hang of that, we’ll start working on transferring it over to his pawrents 🐾

P.S. those lil teefs😍

We’ve officially hit the point where we have to pick and choose which hikes Mally can join on. She’s 13 now, and it definitely takes more out of her than before to do longer walks and hikes. Especially in the heat!!

Myth or Fact Tuesday!

Ending the last Tuesday of June off with another topic on senses. Before becoming a trainer, I just thought dogs have superior senses to us, which included ALL their senses. I quickly discovered I was wrong. We already covered eyesight a little in regard to dogs not seeing as many colours as us, but another sense that’s not superior to ours is their hearing.

It’s important to mention that dogs do have better hearing than us in regard to frequencies. Imagine a dog whistle- silent to us, but not a dog. However, when it comes to basic hearing, that’s not the case.

Dogs can hear things very similarly to us. If you’re talking to someone 50 feet away, and can barely hear, your dogs in the same boat. We love to share about this because it comes in handy for recall, but also if you’re walking by construction for example, and asking your dog to do something when they’re not listening, it very well may just be that they can’t hear you!!

Thank you for joining us along this month in Myth or Fact Tuesday’s!!

Myth or Fact Tuesday!

FACT!! Dogs are extremely emotional animals! Their reptilian brain, where emotions live, is a lot bigger than their cognitive brain, where thinking lives. For us, it’s the opposite. This means it’s a lot harder for your dog to concentrate and think, than live in their emotions/primitive instincts.

If your dog is stuck in their emotional brain, not able to stop jumping because they’re meeting someone new, or barking because they see a dog, a way to help them get back to their thinking brain is to ask a command they know really well, and has a high reinforcement rate. If you’ve tried this, you’ll know that typically when a dog is having big emotions, getting them to listen to that first ask of yours means they’re more likely to listen to the next one. This is because you’ve helped them snap out of their emotions and start working their cognitive abilities!

What’s something your dog has big feelings about? 👇
