Rex is coming along, learning better habits around triggers! Weâve been working with him in short sessions almost every day for just over a week now and heâs been trusting us to be there for him when heâs stressed more and more!
Once heâs got a hang of that, weâll start working on transferring it over to his pawrents đŸ
P.S. those lil teefsđ
Malti đ€đ€
Sweet Oliver enjoyed the shady parts of our sunny walk đ€Ș
(Sometimes that meant walking in our shadow)
Weâve officially hit the point where we have to pick and choose which hikes Mally can join on. Sheâs 13 now, and it definitely takes more out of her than before to do longer walks and hikes. Especially in the heat!!
How old is your dog?
Myth or Fact Tuesday!
Ending the last Tuesday of June off with another topic on senses. Before becoming a trainer, I just thought dogs have superior senses to us, which included ALL their senses. I quickly discovered I was wrong. We already covered eyesight a little in regard to dogs not seeing as many colours as us, but another sense thatâs not superior to ours is their hearing.
Itâs important to mention that dogs do have better hearing than us in regard to frequencies. Imagine a dog whistle- silent to us, but not a dog. However, when it comes to basic hearing, thatâs not the case.
Dogs can hear things very similarly to us. If youâre talking to someone 50 feet away, and can barely hear, your dogs in the same boat. We love to share about this because it comes in handy for recall, but also if youâre walking by construction for example, and asking your dog to do something when theyâre not listening, it very well may just be that they canât hear you!!
Thank you for joining us along this month in Myth or Fact Tuesdayâs!!
Myth or Fact Tuesday!
FACT!! Dogs are extremely emotional animals! Their reptilian brain, where emotions live, is a lot bigger than their cognitive brain, where thinking lives. For us, itâs the opposite. This means itâs a lot harder for your dog to concentrate and think, than live in their emotions/primitive instincts.
If your dog is stuck in their emotional brain, not able to stop jumping because theyâre meeting someone new, or barking because they see a dog, a way to help them get back to their thinking brain is to ask a command they know really well, and has a high reinforcement rate. If youâve tried this, youâll know that typically when a dog is having big emotions, getting them to listen to that first ask of yours means theyâre more likely to listen to the next one. This is because youâve helped them snap out of their emotions and start working their cognitive abilities!
Whatâs something your dog has big feelings about? đ
Boulder says âhi â!
Mally didnât realize when Dad said « weâre going on a hike » he really meant weâre going on a HIKE. We now see that Mally is starting to show her age and just like us, about 5 hours of hiking is not what sheâs used to đ she survived and was great, she just plopped down, laying down completely to relax at every opportunity she got. Including this view point hahaha!
Weâll stick to her usual ~2 hour hikes from now on.
P.S. if you notice her little belly chub, we do tooâŠsheâs on a diet now đ

Gotta love a dog in a rain jacket!
Myth or Fact Tuesday!
Is it not possible for dogs to generalize? Myth! But there is a bit more to hop into with this.
Dogs donât generalize naturally. Theyâre VERY, VERY specific creatures. This is why we always say that you need to teach things everywhere!! If you only train something in one place, your dog will only know it in that one place. While this is less important when teaching something like âsitâ, it becomes a lot more important if youâre teaching your dog door boundaries, leash manners, settling, etc.
The thing is, while your dog doesnât naturally generalize, and itâs difficult for them to do, you can teach them!! But, they do need to be taught it.
Is there something you notice your dog struggles to generalize or something they do in one place, but not another? Weâll go firstđ
Our dog is okay being left in the car while we walk away, but struggles to be left tied up somewhere while we walk away.
Myth or Fact Tuesday!
For each Tuesday in the month of June weâll be talking about common misconceptions with dogs- starting with a bit of a trick question.
Are dog colourblind? Yes and no! Dogs can only see the colours blue and yellow, the rest of things are different shades of grey to them. So, while for most colours they are colourblind, thereâs the exception blue and yellow.
This is why our colour themes are blue and yellow ;)
Did you learn something? đ
Need help with problem behaviours? Contact us today- letâs discuss!
Remote and in person sessions available.
Do you think Kona knows how cute she is?
What has a hired dog trainer taught you in the past?
Weâll go firstđ
We learned that before hiring a dog trainer you should ask in detail about where they learned from, what techniques they use, and if theyâll be using chains to throw at our dog (yes, we really did hire a dog trainer that wanted us to do thatđ). Or backing up their methods using a book published from Disney đ
This is actually the reason we highly, highly encourage our clients to ask us everything theyâd like, to make sure weâre the right fit for what they want. And if they donât ask questions, we offer up information we know they should have before booking with us.
Crazy that we get to work with dogs, and crazier than we get to do it here đđ„°
Hot days are cause for water breaks!
And if the dog youâre walking doesnât want water..shade breaks!
Happy Monday!
Even if itâs a bit early, we donât care- itâs summer - the nice weather has been sooooo nice!! What are your plans for the summer?
We plan to do some camping, soccer games, lake days and just trying new things!! Whether thatâs with our dog or not. And a reminder- itâs okay to do things without your dog (especially if theyâre reactive/nervous/fearful and donât enjoy those things!!).
Weâre so proud of Mia!! After a few walks she was able to conquer her fear of jumping up on something!!
While it may seem like such a small thing, itâs really so big!! The more she learns the things around her arenât scary and are actually fun, the more sheâll enjoy being outside rather than insecure about it.
Do you do confidence boosters on walks?
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!
What are some challenges youâre having with your dog right now? Comment below and weâll make a video about it đ
I think Kona enjoyed her first walk with us đđ„°
Meet Raven (left) and Maple (right)!! These girls are soooooo eager to learn and earn their treats!! Raven especially so đ€Ł she hops up and jumps around, and her feet are always on the move, eager to try things in the hopes itâs something we like so she can get a treat.
Itâs exactly what we like to see- dogs offering behaviours, keeping in mind ones that have earned them a reward in the past. Keeping your dog thinking, keeps their brain working which gets you a tired pup. Our goal for every walk is enrichment, learning and a long nap when we leave đ
Boulder is a champ at giving puppy eyes đ„ș Heâs such a sweet boy!

- socialization (we talk a lot about this because itâs oh so important)
- leash manners and preventing reactivity
- mouthing and how to navigate it
- desensitization, body handling and body language, in regards to appeasement signs and the canine ladder of agression
- drop + recall
But whatâs so nice about our private lessons? Theyâre all personalized to you, your dogs and both of your needs. Each Puppy Bundle looks similar but different because everyone has different priorities!

This was the first dog we encountered with our client and Sterling, where he was completely off leash and we were doing the steps to keep him with her, rather than go play. Because of that, we didnât direct our client to keep walking, knowing Sterling could stay sitting and seeing that the strange dog didnât care about meeting up, we were pretty positive itâd be a smooth interaction, and didnât want to overwhelm our client with directions. The more we walked, we asked our client to keep Sterling moving, as it is easier for dogs to stay focused on you when youâre on the go rather than staying still, watching the trigger approach you. And of course, that is the long term goal! Weâre very happy with our client and Sterlingâs progress!! Theyâre killing it đđ #poodle #training #dogtrainer #trainer #positivereinforcement #forcefree #forcefreerecall
Teaching Leash Manners to puppies or adult dogs looks very similar. The only difference is with very young puppies, our expectations can be a lot lower. We donât need a perfect heel, we just donât want to walk with them pulling on the leash. If you teach them young, pulling = stopping, and stay consistent with it, youâll soon notice how much less theyâll pull. Why? Because stopping is boring! Who wants to do that?! Rewarding your dog whenever theyâre next to you, will in itself help your dog stay in heel because theyâll realize that if they stay there, theyâll get paid, and itâs more fun to get treats than no treats. Have a dog that doesnât take treats on walks? Let us know if youâd like a video about that đđ #puppy #leashmanners #training #positivereinforcement #dogwalk #walkswithdogs #puppyseason #puppyclasses #dogtrainer
A couple of things to note: 1. Notice how little Raph is speaking? This allows Milo to think through his emotions, and make choices on his own. As humans we tend to word vomit, and not be patient- this creates more confusion for your dog!! As much as possible, we always encourage to allow your dogs to make choices on their own, and you be right there to tell them they made a good one. 2. Milo DOES check in- he just needs time! Raph asked for a âlookâ, got nothing, so he tried a prompt to help Milo. Still nothing. That means Milo is above threshold and while there may be a couple of things that could snap him out of it, he was at a large enough distance that we know he could work through it. When you know your dog can work through it- allow them to. You will notice results begin showing more when you do!! For this method, one of many with reactivity, itâs all about pairing the dog with the check in. If you stay silent, your dog looks at a strange dog, then looks at you and you give them a treat. Your dog has learned âwhen I see a dog, and look at my handler, I get rewardedâ. When your dog sees a dog, and you ask for look, and they listen your dog thinks âI saw a dogâŠ. I heard look, checked in and then I got rewardedâ. The cue to check in is âlookâ, not the dog. Donât get us wrong- at first youâll need to ask for a look (and teach that if you havenât already) but when they get the hang of it, stop asking when youâre able to! #training #trainingtips #dogtrainer #reactivity #positivereinforcement #positivereinforcementdogtraining
Moka here was brought home at 5 months from the breeder, and took a group puppy classes where she learned two basics; sit and down. As many owners do over time, we stop paying (giving treats) to our dog for doing behaviours theyâve already learned, especially a sit. With that, we also start repeating ourselves. Now, many months later, Moka isnât quick to respond to âsitâ. She takes 5 seconds to plop down. Why is that? Sheâs learned sit as âSITâ because when you ask your dog repeatedly, typically you get a little frustrated and impatient, so you raise your voice or say it more sternly. On top of this confusion for our dogs, we have also said it 3-5 times, not 1 time. Our learned âsitâ becomes âsit, sit, SIt, SIT, SITâ, or even more confusingly at the end weâll add in âsit DOWNâ. In short, if youâre dog doesnât listen to sit the first time ask yourself 1. When was the last time you paid for sitting when asked? 2. Have I been repeating myself and not giving them time to process my ask (up to 15 seconds) We hope that helps! #training #sit #puppy #learning #positivereinforcement
This is a handy trick for quick wipe ups - especially during walking + training since it involves eating which creates more drool đ But, note that this is part of the overall desensitizing of wiping up Boulderâs face. For real wipe downs, heâs also okay with you rubbing the towel all over his face. Why? Because he gets paid for it! Consistently!! #drool #wipeup #face #boulder #greatdane #dog #cooperativecare
3 things I keep consistent with my walks⊠as a professional dog trainer who also offers enriching walks- or as I like to say; working walks! 1ïžâŁ Leash Manners AKA No Pulling Loose leash walks are a must! While not the only manners we work on, leash manners are definitely a priority! A combination of time to smell and heeling for food, no matter what, includes a loose leash. 2ïžâŁ No Reactions⊠well at least as much as we can (excuse my intense eye roll đ€Ł) While no one can ever guarantee a reaction-free walk, we make it our goal to achieve this, to the best of our capability. Using methods we teach to our dog training clients, we help manage and improve reactions, aiding in your journey with this. 3ïžâŁ Mental Excerise Whether itâs brain games, natureâs snuffle mat (shown in video) or training a fun/useful trick, in addition to the training done while walking, we dedicate time specifically to work your pupâs brain to tire them out all that much more! Interested in a working walk for your working breed dog? Contact us today: 778-788-DOGS or [email protected] #squamish #workingdog #walk #dogwalk @downtownsquamish
The MAJOR benefit of hiring a dog trainer as your dog walker? You get some âfreeâ training!! You also get tips for your walks and helpful information. Of course our main job when we come in as a walker, is to walk your pup, but itâs hard for us to not work on things we know will firstly, benefit both us and you, and secondly, help add enrichment to your pups walk! Dogs want to think and learn, so we add as much of it as possible in our walks. Interested in trying out one-on-one walks where your dog gets undivided attention and learning? Call us! Message us on IG or FB! Email us! Weâve got options đ We hope to hear from you soon! @downtownsquamish #squamish #dog #walk #dogwalker #privatewalks #dogtrainer #trainingwalks
Mona: are we actually going to walk anywhere? #sciencebaseddogtrainer #positivereinforcement #ofcourse #trend Donât get us wrong- we are Positive reinforcement trainers, however no trainer or dog owner can ONLY be R+. Life is unpredictable and we cannot control our dogs environment- working on a sit and they sit on a something pointy that causes discomfort or pain? Thatâs not just R+. Ending a training session when your dog is having a blast? Not just R+ training. If youâre looking for a trainer that doesnât use punishment, looking for a science based one is a good start- typically that means theyâve studied material that shows using P+ does more harm than good, and is simply not needed. P.S. who also has a reactive dog? đââïžđ (really most dogs are reactive to a certain degree, even if theyâre not barking or lunging at the end of a leash! Let us know if you want a video explaining this!) #squamish #canada
Mona has a lot of energy and coming outside is VERY exciting for her - sheâs already eager to see things and bark at them, smell everything and just take in everything thatâs around her. What she isnât eager to do? Lay down and relax. We needed to take a break and just talk, and quickly saw how hard this was for Mona so we took some extra time to sit down and work on it. In the first 10 minutes, we waited for Mona to make the decision to lay down on her ownâŠshe didnât. Thatâs not normal! If your dog doesnât lay down in 10 minutes of you sitting down with them, then itâs something you may want to work on. Why do you want/need your dog to be calm outside? So that you can go places and just stay there without your dog pacing!! Itâs also not fun for your dog to be SO alert outside- they should be calm and confident, and be given the tools to behave this way. (We also had to teach our dog this, and sheâs not perfect!!) Tips to help with making outside more calming: - bring a bone/chew/kong with you to a park bench and sit there with your dog on the floor below you, while they complete the activity you brought. - make more trips outside to do nothing. Walk to your front door, down the steps and just stand there for a few minutes, then return home. - mark and reward all calm behaviours you see; laying down, laying down but with a leg kicked out showing theyâre more relaxed, laying down with their head down, sitting, staying still - think of places you want to take your dog and then set those up for practice! #training #tips #neutraldog #socialization #newdog #calmdog #trainer

Beautiful moment between Boulder and Raph here! Boulder is a Great Dane, so drool comes with spending time with him- especially when youâre feeding him food haha- he needs lots of wipe downs so itâs important heâs comfortable with this happening. You can see here no resistance from Boulder and what does he get for allowing this to happen? Some food at the end!! Reminder, for me as well, that things take time!! I got too excited about Sue doing exactly what I wanted so quickly that I set him up for failure, allowing both him and I to get frustrated when he rightfully failed đ€Šââïž After this he was able to stop between my legs but never sat again in the 5 minutes we worked on it. Why? Because I missed my opportunity and he was not confident from there on out of exactly what I wanted! Dogs are super smart and capable of amazing things but they only have a toddler brain so theyâre limited. Sometimes itâs hard to remember those limitations! When you hear âset your dog up for successâ, what does that really mean? It can mean 1. Setting up an environment theyâll succeed in. 2. Paying them for the small steps in the right direction. 3. Being clear on what you want. 4. Limiting options for failure. In this video how did we hit each one (or rather not hit it?) 1. Gave enough space for Sue to walk around my legs, behind and through them for his body size and comfortably being in small spaces â 2. Accepting small wins and paying him for walking towards and through my legs, gradually increasing the difficulty đ« 3. Paying him extra well for doing the end goal â Being clear myself in the steps I would like to see and building a plan to get there đ« 4. Paying him for the small things, keeping expectations low đ« What are some other ways you can set your dog up for success? #positive #positivereinforcement #cool #training #dogtrainer #dogtraining #trainingisfun #between #middle
