I want to share some other animals with you for once! Last week I was on a holiday in Austria, and I finally got to meet 'murmeltieren' up close. They look like a crossing between a guinea pig and a beaver, they live high up in the mountains and they are sooo cute 😍 These are wild ones who are used to humans.

I was a bit shocked this morning, Billy wouldn´t eat and looked off. When I checked her out I saw that she had pure blood around her butt 😨 Of course that´s a big red flag, so I made a vet appointment right away. I still was a bit stressed about waiting 24 hours though, but in the beginning of the evening she got a lot better! I really hope it was just a bit of damage in the intestines (because of a sharp piece of hay). I have seen that before because of dried herbs, it looks really bad but heals very quickly without medication. If she continues like this I think she will be fine ❤️

Tommie is doing great 🩵 His recent abcess had definitely an outside cause, probably a hairy one on four legs 🙈 Luckily he recovered very quickly, within a week the bald spot was the only reminder!

You won´t believe it; Tommie did his job and the girls are still all together! Even after this picture was made. Bibi started a fight she couldn't win 🤣 I hope they continue in good harmony from now on, then we can make one huge enclosure from the two big ones!

Kareltje is no longer with us 💔 We were able to get him 3.5 wonderful extra years but it was enough now. His mind could go on forever, but his body couldn't. It would have been selfish to not let him go, so that is what I did. I did know this for a few days so I was able to get him everything he liked, he even ate grass this morning 🥰 I am going to miss him so much, he and Wikkie have been my favorites for years. He was very tame and loved to be pet. He was always super happy, kind to all the other piggies and he would came running towards me when I called his name!
Thanks to Marley Kareltje came here, she picked him herself when she didn't like my other piggies anymore. She attacked the first 3-4 neutered males, and then she got Kareltje in her cage and it was love at first sight! Of course she got to keep him and the rest is history. She definitely had a great taste in man 😋 He became a real ladiesman over here. He lived together with every single girl I had while he was here because he was so relaxed and nice towards them, so all the girls liked him back. He even went on three holidays with us so I could give him his medication myself, he was oke with everything as long as he got his vegetables and at least one lady 🙈 I'm gonna miss him a so much 😔 Every now and then there's a piggy that stands out and to me Kareltje was definitely one of them. I even got two more Agouti's; Tommie & Kiko from the same breeder thanks to him! I hate days like today, but I'm so glad that he was able to live for 5 years ❤️ When the tumors were discovered it didn't look like he was going to make it to his second birthday, so it's amazing that he got to live a normal life after all! I'm sure his girls are going to miss him. Since December he lived with Guusje and Bibi. They're not so nice to each other without him around, but I hope that they can keep each other in one piece for two days. This evening they were still doing fine 😅 Wednesday or Thursday I will try to move them in with the other girls and Tommie.

Mister fancy haircut is doing very well 😋 Tommie is being a great patient, he takes his medicine very easily and if he would have his hair you wouldn't even notice anything was there at all!

It's Kareltje's fifth birthday, he made it!! 🥳 We didn't expect him to make it to his second birthday and look at him now, posing next to his 5 🥰

Today is world Lyme day, a day to spread the word about this silent fight is very welcome! Unfortunately I got Lyme disease when I was 9 years old. The Lyme bacteria I got can be perfectly treatable with the right treatment, quickly after containing it. But that's the issue; it wasn't found until 6 years later. This is what happens a lot with Lyme disease because there's not nearly enough knowledge about it. When Lyme isn't treated in time it becomes very hard to find a cure. I have had 22 months of 2-3 different antibiotics at the same time, different kinds of medicine, supplements, diet changes etc. but I didn't even get close to being completely healthy again. After the IV's I got a bit more stable, when I'm in rest the pain is controllable with heavy painkillers. However I can only work 2 x 4 hours a week with occasionally an extra 4 hours. When I do too much the pain starts to build up more and more until I can't do anything at all. So I am always very careful and don't mess with my limits. I just enjoy the small things, like guinea pigs 😋🥰 I only write about this because I want to warn others about the risks of this disease. You can so easily get it by a tickbite which is often preventable! -A tickbite isn't the only way, but it is the most common.- Use a spray, put your pants in your socks (when everyone does it it even becomes trendy 😜) and check yourself after being in a green environment!

Good news about Tommie! ❤️
The vet was optimistic, a bite wound or a sharp piece of hay seems like the most likely cause. He now gets antibiotics for a while, if it doesn't heal he still needs further research for his teeth but that probably won't be necessary 🍀 Maybe I have to tell the girls they shouldn't bite into his cheeks the next time he's annoying 😂🙈

I was a bit shocked when Tommie looked at me this morning, he has a big abcess in his cheek. I cleaned it and have never seen this much pus before 😨 I'm glad the weekend is almost over, I know what I'm doing tomorrow 😅 Molars teeth can cause this kind of abcsesses so I really hope the vet can rule that out.. Tommie is acting fine by the way, his behaviour and the way he eats are both normal.

From birdfeeder to piggyfeeder! Keep an eye out for Guusje stealing Bibi's catch 🤣

The piggies got an upgrade! Right now the boys are in the bigger enclosures, but when they go back to theirs both couples have a second floor too 🎉 They love running up and down, so that will be great for them! Right now Kareltje, Guusje and Bibi stay in the two homes connected to each other. When the boys move back in, the one on the right will be moved to the other side of the attic. Otherwise they will definitely visit each other 🤣

For Christmas the piggies got home-made cookie-cups filled with dried vegetables 😄 Want to try this at home? I used: * Dried pea flakes * Dried dandelion leaves * Pellets * Puffed wheat The ingredients are up to choice, as long as you can blend it to powder. The pellets and pea flakes are a really good base. Once you've blend it to powder you add water until it looks like dough, not too wet. I don't weigh, it doesn't come close. When you have the dough, put a layer of +/- 5 millimeters on the bottom and edge of the muffin molds. Bake it for 30 minutes on 180 degrees celcius. Let it stay outside the oven for a few hours until it's cool and hard. Then you can add a filling in the middle, I used dried vegetables. As you can see, the piggies loved it! You can make cookies with this same 'recipe'. it's also fun to add dried vegetables once you have the powder, this makes it a more colorful cookie.
