Repeating commands over and over is a common mistake we make when teaching our dogs different cues or command.

It’s important to let your dog process what you are asking of them and give an opportunity for compliance. The more you say it, the less they hear it — and it loses all of its value.

Start asking for things like “sit” just one time, pause and allow them the chance to do it.

Are YOU giving your dog separation anxiety? 😬

We can easily instill it in our puppies, young dogs and rescues but not allowing them their own independence. Socialization is important, but you can easily overdo it. ✋

🐾 If you take your puppy everywhere and spend every waking moment with them, you’re seeing setting up a false expectation that you’ll always be in their presence.

Separation Anxiety is a serious issue that can escalate and potentially have to be fixed with medication. 💊

This is important!

When are dogs are displaying their cRaZy behaviors 🤪 our inclination is to pet them, in hopes they’ll calm down. 😌

On actuality, they’re perceiving that as praise.

So, start recognizing when your pup is calm and reward them for that instead. Showing them that we like that behavior, will start teaching them to do it more. 👏

The secret to teaching “fetch” is having a second ball to encourage your dog to come back to it and drop the one they are bringing. 🎾

— Throw the first ball.

— Be excited as your dog is coming back to you. 🥳

— Get down eye level and be a cheerleader 👀

— When your dog is a few feet away, say “Drop it!”

— As soon as they do, throw the second ball.

— Repeat!🔁

Using a stern voice for the “Leave It” command only stops the behavior, by getting your dogs attention. 👀

Instead, make it a game, by using a happy and engaging high-pitched voice. 😃 Your dog will start understanding that coming to you, instead of ignoring the directive, is a way better choice 👍

When you're pup grabs shoes, socks or anything else we don't want them to have, they're not doing it to because "they know they shouldn't!" In fact, they actually know they should! 👟🧦

Your dog has figured out what gets you up off that sofa to start the game! If they grab a toy, nobody moves. Your dog is pretty smart! 🧠🧐

🥳 Reward your dog for the good behaviors they give you, like deciding to chill on their bed with a bone. And they'll do that more often.

And if you want to keep your shoes in-tact -- put them away!

One of the biggest issues I hear from clients is that their dog doesn’t focus or look when they try to get their attention.

👀 Eye contact is one of the most important parts of communication.

Start by holding a distraction out to the side so your dog is looking away. While they are staring at the object, 🗣️ say “LOOK!” to get their attention on you. When they make the decision to look at you instead of that distraction, reward them from your other hand.

If they start to look for the treat, just wait until they give you eye contact and then reward.

This exercise is great for walks when your dog is more interested in everything except you!

Potty training is a huge pain-point for most puppy owners. Mike’s 10-20-10 Method is proven to work 100% of the time if you follow it to the letter.

Dogs do not potty in spaces where they eat or sleep, which is why you feed in the crate — always in a reduced space.

Taking them out on a leash and standing in one spot reduces the amount of distractions so they can concentrate on using the bathroom.

You may have to do the 10-20-10 cycle several times at the beginning, but it will take away any opportunity for your pup to have an accident.

It's a lot to ask of your pup to just sit quietly by your feet, when visiting an outdoor cafe. Always look at things from your dogs perspective -- and here is a great way:

Sit on your sofa, alone. Don't pick up your phone or have the TV on. Don't read a book or talk to anyone. Just sit. See how long you make it before you're bored to tears. Get it?

Always have something available for your dog to do, when you just want him to chill -- because just laying by your feet watching people will get old quickly!

I often hear people tell their dog to "sit" ... then follow it up with "good sit!"

Well, if you look at it from your dogs perspective, when you say "sit", they do the action. Then, you give them affirmation with "good" to tell them you liked what they did -- but then add the word "sit" again.... The dog is thinking, "Huh? ... I am already sitting... how can I sit again?" Some dogs hear that and lay down, because it's the closest thing they know to sitting again!"

So, keep it simple: Ask for a "sit" and then use your action reinforcer and say "Good!" or "Yes!" in a happy voice!

As dog parents, we are responsible for communicating properly, to ensure our pups are giving us the behaviors we want. However, it's easy to undo some of the great progress our dogs make -- and we don't even know we're doing it.

EXAMPLE:

We have been teaching our pups that jumping on people is a behavior we won't tolerate. When guests arrive, we have them on a leash and encourage and reward calm behavior.

However, after a long day at work, we come home and our dogs are soooo happy to see us... They jump up and give us a "hug!"

HUG = JUMPING

Don't send your dog a mixed message by thinking that hugging and jumping are synonymous!

Having a dog or, specifically, a puppy, can be a frustrating proposition. They strive to please us, but sometimes don't quite understand how. Patience and love will get you to the goal much quicker. Hitting your dog WILL NOT send the message you think. Dogs to "dog things" and you can't punish them for it -- they don't understand or put the "correction" to the "offense". Hitting a dog is proven to have long-lasting negative consequences. Love wins all the time.

Society has created this misconception that we must have total control of our dogs with everything they do.

We have to be able to tell how they act in all situations, environments and during every interaction.

That's not even realistic.

Dogs have their own thoughts, feelings, and emotions. You can’t control any being that thinks for themselves.

It also puts a great deal of stress on us dog parents, that we must be in control of everything.

When you’re training, try to change the mindset of being in control of your dog to instead supporting your dog through all experiences… it makes life so much enjoyable for both of you.

You get to see your dog’s true personality as you let them “be a dog.”

You’ll see them build confidence, make choices, act silly and conquer fears.

Using a crate does not mean that you are an inattentive or lazy pet owner who abuses their dog for convenience sake. It means you are a great pet owner who is interested in keeping your dog safe and sound and out of trouble.

With few exceptions, by confining your pup when you can’t watch him and taking him out at appropriate times, you indeed help to solidify the idea in the dog’s mind that outdoors is the best place to use the bathroom. Allowing them to remain loose, roaming the house, peeing and pooping at will? Yeah, that will slow down the house training process alright – it might make it barely possible at all.

Dogs don’t hate crates. They really don’t, and we aren’t just saying that. Sure, a dog can learn to hate his crate if you handle things poorly, but it takes some effort on your part for that to happen. Dogs naturally like a ‘den’. A crate is a safe quiet place that should mean only positive things to a dog. Can you train a dog to hate his crate? Yes. People do it quite often. Sometimes without knowing they are doing it. If you have trained your dog to hate his crate, you are not allowed to claim that your dog hates his crate. It’s that simple. The responsibility for their dislike sits firmly with you.

Crate training DOES NOT cause any of the following: Aggression, withdrawal, hyperactivity, depression, eating disorders, obsessive licking, separation anxiety, inability to bond with humans or muscle atrophy. Lots of factors can cause one or more of these issues, but proper use of a crate doesn’t cause any of them.

Any tool can be misused. Using the crate in a proper manner is anything but cruel – it might be one of the greatest things you can do ‘right’ with your dog.
