Did you see my beautiful pre-op pic? Well now for the serious part..
[TLDR: consider having your female dogs spayed to prevent pyometra]
Got spayed and I'm back home and recovering really well.💕 But while Doc Alay was doing the procedure, she found early signs of one of our worst fears: PYOMETRA! (The same thing we were trying to prevent.)
Pyometra is an infection in the female reproductive tract caused by hormonal changes. Our vets have been seeing increasing cases of these in their patients and always warn us about it.
During my procedure, Doc found small cysts and irregularities in my uterus already. Luckily we scheduled my spaying now so it was caught early. Had we waited a few more months or til my next heat cycle, the cysts could've progressed and created the perfect conditions for bacterial growth--causing a full blown pyometra.
I never had any symptoms and blood work always came out clear. Most dogs are diagnosed with pyometra when they are quite ill already resulting in a more complicated surgical procedure.
So if you're a female dog and don't have plans of reproducing anymore or you're at a more advance age (I'm 7yo) talk to your vet and consider getting an ovariohysterectomy (spay) to avoid more complications later on.👌🏽 Stay safe and healthy everyone!💖
