March always exceeded expectations.
He was born a red sable merle, whose spots were the color of a rusty Brillo pad, and my first thought was that I wouldn’t have to waste any money showing him in conformation.
Because he was a singleton, I enrolled him in puppy classes as soon as possible. It took 3 weeks before he was more interested in the other puppies than the people. He was a thoughtful puppy. When confronted with a new experience, he would stop to contemplate it.
His spots softened somewhat with age, and I began to show him. I was told he would never finish, but he earned a Grand Championship. He sired a total of 14 pups – 7 of them are finished champions.
He had a natural aptitude for herding, moving stock smoothly and gently. I began to call him “Dances with Sheep”. He trialed well above his training level, going RHIT from HSAs the day he earned his second leg in that class.
With age, his always-perfect ears went prick, but he remained willing to give us whatever was desired. He considered himself not only my child, but my FAVORITE child.
He always exceeded expectations, even when a spinal insult destroyed his mobility.
Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.
