We got this awesome video today of Kia, guide dog in training working with her handler. Kia us learning routines and patterns. This allows her to know just how to guide her handler to the location they're wanting to go, safely. In this case the mail box. This is something they do daily but today we added some distractions and obstacles for Kia to have to maneuver around. She did fairly well for having something new thrown at her. Kia is trained to watch and alert to on coming cars. Her handler is hard of hearing and sometimes won't hear them coming. You notice she waits until the cars are completely gone before moving on again. She is super eager and excited. You can see her literally jump forward into her harness to get moving.

Service dogs are defined not by the vests that they wear but by thier impeccable manners and obedience. A small video of two service dogs ignoring each other in a very busy Costco, on a Saturday morning.

Service dogs are exposed to thousands of different stimuli during thier training. Public restrooms provide a great experience to work and train around loud, strange noises that you wouldn't find in home. Service dogs accompany thier handlers everywhere the general public is allowed to go. This includes public restrooms. Training in these environments is a pivotal part of a service dogs well rounded exposure. Atticus and Max demonstrate a lovely reaction to this new, loud stimuli. They locate the sound and then redirect focus to the trainer. Both have a calm, relaxed demeanor.

The many faces of a service dog.

Down stays for a service dog are very important. At doctors offices, schools, events or out and about in public. It's a lot of stop and go. Here we see a service dog in training demonstrating a nice down stay, well out in public.

Gunner is fairly new to our program. He is doing wonderful with his handler. They're learning how to communicate and slow down together in new places. Gunner wants to speed up and see everything but he's learning to go at dad's pace. In this video they're working on different surfaces. I.e the metal grating on the ground. This can be intimidating to dogs and awkward to walk on. Only took gunner a few tries before he was sitting and laying down on it with no problem. Gunner is full of energy and eager to learn. He will make a wonderful service dog.

Canine Kinship

It has been a dream of founder Hanna Myers to create a company like Canine Kinship. Service dogs are near and dear to her heart. From the age of 12, Hanna has been working with a service dog to help her with her own disability. Since then she has had two other service dogs. The independence and freedom that these dogs where able to give to Hanna was life changing. She wanted to be able to bring that kind of freedom to others with disabilities. And so Canine Kinship was born.

Canine Kinship trains and pairs service dogs with individuals with disabilities at no cost. This is possible through grants, sponsors and generous donations from our amazing community. we strive to bring education and advocacy to the surrounding community and businesses. Our mission is not only to be advocates for those with disabilities but for the businesses of our community.

To bring a better understanding of the laws and regulations governing service dogs and those with disabilities to the community and our local businesses.
