To my human moms & dads, this is what happens to my paws when you take me out in the scorching sun ☀️ when the pavement is so hot !

Remember I sweat through my paws, so in this heat I can’t get rid of my sweat as my paws are burning. Missing my walk won’t harm me. Please let me just relax indoors and take me out when the sun is down🐾

If you see someone walking their dog on hot pavement, ask them to take off their shoes for the remainder of their walk home. Maybe then they'll understand.

Thank you to 8 Below Husky Rescue for this valuable advice 🙏

"When the individual driving the truck, which confined nearly 20 dogs, pulled into a gas station in Lake Station, Indiana, representatives from the Humane Society of Hobart—the city’s contracted animal control agency—responded immediately. But instead of allowing them to take charge of the scene, ensure appropriate emergency aid for the animals, and conduct a professional criminal investigation, the Lake Station Police Department reportedly blocked their efforts to assist."

Please urge Lake Station Mayor Bill Carroll and the Lake Station City Council to compel the police department to recuse itself from the case, to allow the Humane Society of Hobart to retain protective custody of all animals involved, and to ensure that an unaffiliated third-party agency take over th...

BREAKING NEWS:

Henry Sommers of Happy Puppys in Cincinnati, Iowa was arrested and charged today.

Sommers was charged with two counts of Animal Neglect with Serious Injury (Aggravated Misdemeanors); three counts of Animal Neglect with Injury (Serious Misdemeanors); and two counts of Animal Neglect without Injury (Simple Misdemeanors).

This was due to the nearly 100 page complaint that Bailing Out Benji filed at the beginning of January detailing all of his recent violations and our polite demands to surrender the animals in his care.

DAY 84

“In an effort to “conserve staff time and resources,” Iowa regulators have slashed the penalty imposed on one of the state’s most notorious puppy mill operators.

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has cut the fine it imposed last October against former dog breeder Daniel Gingerich, reducing it from $40,000 to $10,000.”

JUST LOVELY…🤬

Last September, federal authorities took Gingerich to civil court in a successful effort to shutter his rural Wayne County dog-breeding operation, Maple Hill Puppies. That effort culminated with Gingerich surrendering more than 500 dogs to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and agreeing to never again participate in a licensed business covered by the federal Animal Welfare Act.

In addition, Gingerich was criminally prosecuted and pleaded guilty to one count each of animal neglect resulting in injury and animal neglect resulting in serious injury or death. He was ordered to spend 30 days in jail and serve two years of probation. He then served his jail sentence in four-day increments in Ohio, where he now lives.

Shortly after the federal civil action was initiated last year, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship imposed $20,000 in administrative penalties against Gingerich and suspended his license for 60 days, citing the same violations of the Animal Welfare Act that U.S. Department of Agriculture officials referenced in federal court. Gingerich never appealed, or paid, that fine.

In October of last year, IDALS officials imposed an additional $40,000 in fines against Gingerich based on his continued failure to provide adequate care for his animals. At that time, IDALS took the additional step of revoking, rather than suspending, his ability to operate as a federally permitted dog breeder in Iowa.
Gingerich appealed that penalty, which led to IDALS agreeing to a settlement that reduces the $40,000 fine to $10,000.”

Only got a couple photos from yesterday's rally, but it was a success! We had tons of people honking and waving, a couple asked questions and we're hoping they'll find a local shelter or rescue group for their next pup.

Posted • Predatory lending in pet stores is another major concern around these businesses. Not only are they selling puppy mill puppies to the public but they are also preying on people's finances.

Petland offers both a credit card which is capped at 29.9% interest and high interest loans to purchase a dog which we have seen interest upwards of 188%. Imagine buying a puppy for $5,000 only to find out that after the interest on your loan is calculated the puppy will now cost you $9,400. Almost double!!

Unfortunately, it isn't only Petland offering customers predatory lending but also your local "mom and pop" pet stores as well. This is done in a sneaky and manipulative manner by pet stores where the interest is built into the monthly payment and it doesn't look "that bad" to the customer - rather than seeing the total cost of the puppy after the outrageous interest. All while playing on the customer's emotions as they have just fallen in love with a new adorable puppy.

The pet store industry is a shady one and these scams are happening across the country. This is about customer protection, but these pet stores are getting away with deceiving the public not only on where the puppies come from and their health, but also on the cost of the puppy.

There are endless news articles on predatory lending in pet stores, just google “pet stores predatory lending”

Wonderful rally today at The Pet Shop with Animal Defenders Greater Lehigh Valley! Thank you to all who came out and helped us share info about where to adopt instead of buying. If we do this often enough, they might go out of business like Wentz Canine and Puppy Love did years ago. Several people stopped by today and we helped a couple of them with finding a shelter or rescue to adopt from. We'll be planning another rally soon!

More than 400 localities across the United States have passed local or county ordinances and state bills that prohibit pet stores from being able to partner with puppy mills for puppy and kitten sales!

To help with that, our nonprofit has created the nation's largest puppy mill database by connecting more than 410 puppy-selling stores to the puppy mills they source from. Our research has been instrumental in educating the public, as well as policy makers, in order to create lasting change for the animals.
