Got to do a fun case yesterday. Horse had a very large abscess. This insult was opened by the vet to drain and remove necrotic tissue. This left a large hole in the sole so the vet ordered a hospital plate over a bar shoe. For those that don’t know what that is, we have fashioned a piece of 1/8 diamond plate aluminum over a bar shoe that is drilled and tapped for 1/4” bolts. Effectively creating a bolt on cover for the shoe and bottom of the hoof. This allows for medication and packing such as gauze in this case to be easily applied and changed daily without having to re-bandage the hoof every day. Also this is more durable than typical bandages so it won’t wear away and allow the normal debris that cover a hoof. Just loosen a few bolts, change packing, apply medicine and bolt the cover back on. Thanks for looking, Merry Christmas everyone!

Mistakes I made with farriers before my husband was one and doing my own…

1.) Didn’t have my horses ready on time for appts.

2.) Wasn’t always clear about what horses we were doing or who needed shoes ahead of them so they could be prepared.

3.) Didn’t actively try to prevent my horse pulling a shoe like I should have.

4.) Thought my horse pulling a shoe was my farriers fault. (I cringed hard when I wrote this one 😬)

5.) Expected my farrier to reschedule my missed appointments promptly that I canceled.

6.) Assumed they should have all the answers, and know everything. 🫣

7.) Didn’t have bug spray and fans ready all the time.

8.) Let other people hold my horse at appts. ( this might work for some, but I’m too a**l, and then complained later if something was missed)

9.) Didn’t get the X-rays routinely that could have helped my farrier accomplish my own goals for my horse.

This is the big one….

10.) Didn’t tell my farrier when my horse got sore after a trim/shoe- but held resentment.

First of all, a farrier can’t fix what he doesn’t know is broken.

Second of all, anyone can make mistakes, heck Doctors kill people everyday. 😉 If you don’t believe it.. Google it. Upwards of 250,000 a year from medical mistakes?! 🤫

The thing is, sometimes what we think should help the horse does the opposite, some of these hard cases are trial and error when finding a solution.

Compound that on the fact that it takes a long time to grow a foot out, they are battling numerous variables when trying to change your horses feet for the better.

Communicate with your farrier, have open discussions, ask why, express your expectations and above all.. TELL THEM WHEN THEY MADE YOUR HORSE SORE!

One more tidbit now that I’ve fully exposed how awful of a client I was… 😫 (my apology to all my past farriers)

It shouldn’t be routine and normal for your horse to be consistently sore after a trim. If they are, consult with your farrier. Afterall, would you let someone keep trimming your toe nails if it hurt to walk after they were done the next day, every 6 weeks. 😲

Just finished this horse up. This is my personal horse that I am about 4 weeks late getting to. Due to the dry weather and our sandy soil that keeps their hooves so nice and dry, this horse broke off a large section of hoof on his lateral side. As you can see, I was still able to get this shoe on and nailed up to solid hoof wall. Please don’t assume that because your horse has some broken hoof wall that I won’t be able to shoe it. Sometimes that is the case but us older farriers have a few tricks up our sleeves!!!

Effective May 1: base rates for shoeing will go up $10. Half sets will go up appropriate amount. Other consumable add on such as pads, traction aids, etc will have price increases accordingly. Any questions please reach out to me.

It is becoming clear that many of you are not receiving invoices/receipts emails. Please check your junk mail or spam folders. I send them almost always on the same business day. I have the system sending a copy to my personal email and they are coming through to me. I will be contacting the company to see if there is anything on their end.

I want to give everyone a heads up. With gas prices so high, I will not be pulling my trailer on days that are scheduled with only trims. If a customer has booked time to have their horse shod, I will be bringing it. Please let me know ahead of our appointment if you plan to have me shoe any.

Due to the rising costs of supplies (at or above a 20% increase) and rising costs of fuel, I have to do a price increase to keep up with the inflation. Effective May 1, all base prices will increase by $5.

Ok folks, my schedule is a mess due to, well, winter. I just found out that it is worse than I thought and I have different appointments down that several customers. I am not sure how to remedy this other than make sure you got the automated reminder if you have an appointment coming up. If not, I likely have a different time than you so please check with me. I am not sure how this came to be. I do apologize for any confusion

Just to be clear, all appointments during winter months are tentative pending severe weather. This includes actual air temp, extreme wind, snow storms and anything involving poor driving conditions. I do everything in my power to communicate as quickly and as effectively as possible.
