Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue is dedicated to rescuing companion birds in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. Below is an overview of the organization.
(35)

We are an all volunteer non-profit organization. Mickaboo is dedicated to rescuing companion birds (parrot-type and other commonly domesticated birds) who have been neglected, abused, injured or surrendered to us. We are a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1996 in Northern California. Most of our volunteers and foster birds live in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento Valle

y. Our goals are:
- To ensure that birds in our care will have a safe, loving environment for life.
- To educate bird owners on the most current standard of care, so that the medical, emotional, and dietary needs of their birds will be met. Mickaboo Organizational Structure

To ensure that every donor dollar possible goes toward the care of needy birds, Mickaboo has no shelter facility or paid staff. This helps us keep overhead costs extremely low but requires us to structure ourselves much differently than a typical animal shelter. All of our people, board members included, are unpaid volunteers. Board of Directors

The Board of Directors sets goals and policies for Mickaboo and oversees our direction. The board is also responsible for approving our budgetary program and protecting our status as a 501(c)3 organization. Current members of the board are listed here. Chief Executive Officer and Leadership Committee

The Chief Executive Officer is a board member and is the person primarily responsible for managing the daily operations of Mickaboo. The CEO ensures that we are operating in line with the goals set out by the Board, consults with the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer on budget and financial matters, and coordinates the activities of the Leadership Committee and Administrative Volunteers. The Leadership Committee is a group of experienced and knowledgable volunteers who help lead our day-to-day operations and provide management assistance and advice. The Leadership Committee is a core group of the Administrative Volunteers, who manage all of our daily operations and train newer volunteers. Volunteers

The heart and soul of Mickaboo are its volunteers. The volunteers have daunting responsibilities for bird intake, fostering, veterinary care, transport and logistics as well as our education efforts, home visits and other necessary tasks. A subgroup of the volunteers referred to as the "Administrative Volunteers" coordinate specific areas of responsibility, serve as points of contact for other volunteers and the public, and do other administrative work. For example, while many people are involved in the movement and care of conures, the "Conure Coordinator" is the Administrative Volunteer who is the point of contact for all conure-related activities. Because these positions are shared and turnover occurs as volunteer availability shifts, these positions are not listed here. For information on volunteering, see Volunteer.

Our servers are down today from 9am to 4pm for planned tech maintenance! Emails to us, and access to our website, may be intermittent for a little while after that while everything comes online again. Don’t panic, we’ll be online again soon! Meanwhile we’ve got plenty of avian maintenance to keep working at as well :) Here are some of our recent and ongoing cases.

Emergency bird rescue! Yesterday Mickaboo volunteers jumped into action after SFACC asked us to assist with 12 birds (9 budgies, 3 finches) recently found in the home of a deceased individual. Sadly, the birds had been covered, and it was some time before anyone realised they were there. Rotting bread and food was found in the dishes along with brown, putrid water. Two budgies had already passed away at the bottom of the cage, and one finch had to be euthanized on arrival at SF Shelter.

Within 2 hours Mickaboo arrived to collect the remaining birds and bring them to a dedicated avian vet for care and treatment. The birds are still on a custody hold for some time, but right now we are ensuring that they receive the urgent medical care that they need in order to survive this ordeal.

If you can give anything to support their care, please help; even $5 adds up to ensure that this little flock remains safe and gets all of the help that they need now.

Thank you 💔

We’re at the Oasis Sanctuary today, leaving tonight. Our Quaker Paulie is in the aviary in soft release, getting situated before they let him out! He has a marking for ID purposes - not a head wound :)

Mickaboo volunteers Mindy and Sarah helped clear out the straw change in the girl cockatoo aviary- now we’re picking up our green cheek conure Link and getting ready to pack up. A long day of hot work and driving makes for a good night of sleep 👍

More photos once we are done traveling. Th Oasis has guest rooms for volunteers to stay. They always need more help in the summer months - consider coming out!

Ollie, our very plucked Indian Ringneck who recently came to us, is doing so much better and is getting more confident every week. He started enjoying baths and he got a few new green feathers at his neck. We hope he will start growing more feathers over time. He also likes beak scritches now. It’s amazing how well he can balance and climb around.

If you want to help with his medical costs, please consider a donation to Mickaboo in his name. The bird hospital did an amazing job with converting him to the right food in only 2 weeks and he now eats healthy food - lots of it.

I don’t know what it is but we are currently getting in more ringnecks than usual. Our newest arrival is a baby ringneck that still needs to be hand-fed. She was found outside and brought to a shelter, which wasn’t equipped to handle young birds like her. Lillie is a real cutie and we are lucky to have a committed Mickaboo volunteer, who feeds her every 4 hours, including at night. We couldn’t do this without all the great people putting so much time and effort into helping birds. THANK YOU.

Once Lillie is more independent, she will be ready for adoption.

We've had lots of intakes in Dec and Jan and a lot less new foster homes and adopters - and with peak fundraising, we haven't been posting as many stories about them. Time to catch up! This is Tippy, a wee splay legged budgie who came in last week. Tippy is being treated at the vet.

If you'd be open to accommodating splay legged budgies, we have some more coming in that will need homes. Please reach out! They often need soft flannel liners changed daily and soft, flat places to land on play areas.

We're excited to launch the Quita Challenge Grant today, until Dec 31!
http://mickaboo.org/donate

Our last matching grant opportunity for 2023! A generous donor has created a Challenge Grant to honor his late parrotlet, Quita. Starting today until the $20K in matching funds run out, or 2023 ends, whichever comes first:

Your gift up to and including $100 will be matched at 25%
Gifts of $101-$999 will be matched at 50%
Gifts of $1000 or more will be matched at an astounding 100%!

Please give generously and support the birds. So many of the birds we see need medical treatment, and it is only possible with the kind donations we receive from the public. Over 95% of the funds we raise are spent on medical bills. Thank you for making this work possible!

Here is Lila, another December intake (of many.. we have a lot of catch up posts to share!). Lila is another case we prioritized, as we could see right away she showed signs for Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD). The PBFD virus is very difficult to eradicate from homes as it can spread via feather dander and it is highly resistant to many disinfectants.

Lila tested positive, and we were fortunately able to place her in hospice care with a foster volunteer who already has a PBFD positive budgie. We are very grateful to Kate for taking in these two very special little birds and keeping them safe. ❤

Hi Bird! This bird is named Bird. He even says 'Hi Bird!.

We've been indundated with surrender requests this month for many bird species, large and small. We're having to make difficult decisions about who to prioritize. This is hard time of year to find more foster places, and almost all of our homes are full. Bird got lucky! If you have space to foster for us, please reach out via our website contact form to learn how to get started.

We raced to pick Bird up as he was about to left completely alone in a home for over two weeks. He was on a diet of nuts only, and had an overgrown beak and nails, but he is young and friendly, and with improved care we are very hopeful he will thrive. Bird is available for adoption.

Way to go Mando! Mando is a relatively new foster bird who has been super shy about coming out of his cage. But with daily routine and encouragement, patience and almond sliver treats.. today Mando came all the way up on top of the cage!

Sometimes progress takes weeks and months, not days. But if you are consistent and patient, it can happen. Mando is available for adoption.

Tiny juvenile budgie stray Natalie was found by a Good Samaritan who heard a commotion outdoors and saw a neighbors cat chasing her down!
Found in Mountain View and taken to SVACA 9/29.
Major wounds under right wing. Fractured humerus. Feather shaft mites, avian gastric yeast and giardia. That’s a lot for a little budgie to deal with but so far she is responding well to treatment ❤️

Sorry little one, we raced to pick you up and help you but your injuries were too severe and it was too late.

This little wild parrot baby was our sixth intake of the season. So far four of these have survived.

Please consider donating to support our help for the wild parrots. Until Oct 6 we’re selling fundraiser shirts / bag / mugs too - linktr.ee/Mickaboorescue. Since 2003 we have never turned a wild parrot in need of help away and the costs are substantial as they *all* need medical help!
