Taking some cuttings in one of my tanks, you don't get much pinker than the underside of this Ludwigia Repens 'Double Red'
One of our many Juwel Rio set ups, this one is around a year old, great contrast of colour in the centre between the Ludwigia 'double red' and Hygrophylla Diformis in the foreground which has uncharacteristically stated growing horizontally. # aquariummaintenance
Our 13'x39"x39" super tank is finally being built today after much planning, this beast holds 3500ltrs and is constructed using 19mm glass, galvanised and powder coated steel collars top and bottom with a double base, all done by the dream team from Seabray Aquariums Ltd, the attention to detail is second to none and why I always use them for my bespoke installations. We will be going in to do the dry fit in a couple of weeks and then soon after the aquascape and waterfill, keep watching to follow the progress
A few snaps of one of our reef systems.
Roughly three years in for this tank which began life as a fish only system until the client got the bug for corals, that was about two years ago, from there it has gone from strength to strength, especially after we added to the already existing D+D Hydra HD32s, two of the new D+D Blade Glos, I can't rate the D+D range highly enough, the programming is so easy and versatile, you always get what you want from it.

This is a tank I have looked after on a very sporadic basis for a few years, the client has always struggled with poor plant growth/black beard algae. Recently he has asked me to start maintaining it on a regular basis, this is two months in and it has turned around, I can now take action on tackling the algae which is all but gone, plant growth has kicked off due to the correct pruning, especially the Ambulia (Limnophylla sessilifolia) as you can see from the pics.
Why I love Gouramis above all other fish, they are in my opinion, the most graceful of all fish, tough, colourful and for fish that can get quite large aside from the dwarf species, they are incredibly peaceful.
This is a first for me, I have never seen a tropical water lily flower before, this is a nymphea red lotus that sent a bud out last week and wow! What a beauty. Water parameters: PH 6.8, Gh 6°, Kh 4°, temp. 25°, Co2 15mg/l. I hope this is not the only flower.
I set up a small Iwagumi tank yesterday, a Vision 180, not a lot of groundspace to create a sweeping landscape so I went up by building the 'mountain' out of separate small pieces of rock allowing me to create two terraces with sandbeds to accommodate the Micranthemum Umbrosum, this requires lots of delicate packing out to prevent sand falling away.
A monthly trim from this Rio 350 planted tank, lighting is provided by the juwel Helialux system, this is the tank after the trim!
One of my denser planted aquariums, this rio 350 requires constant pruning every month and can easily fill a carrier bagful of cuttings
Iwagumi style aquascape at night, this kind of planted aquarium requires careful management as one species of plant can quickly overcome another and the balance is lost.
This Red Sea Re**er 525 was purchased by a client from a seller up north, they arranged picking the tank, water and livestock up and making the journey themselves. We were asked to set it up once they got it back, aquascape and introduce the livestock, this was done without issue, however, a few days later and a frantic message involving cloudy water and corals closing down meant an emergency weekend callout. After a little investigating it transpired the client had poured several litres of ro water onto an sps coral causing it to die, this then added toxins to the water and was having an effect on the tank with rising No2 levels adding to the problem. After a big waterchange and a lot of TLC the corals picked right up very quickly. It is now doing very well as the pictures show, the only issue is a couple of tangs that came with the tank were thin but we are working on that, lots of nori.
My absolute favourite, the cardinal tetra, I can't do a planted set up without a generous shoal of these beauties being added, the blue/red against a lush green background is mesmerising. These specimens are two years old now and loving their 700ltr tank.
Beautiful red eyed marble angels, developing a lovely blue sheen.
Another fairly new client, I refurbed this Rio 350 around August, it has an alarming rate of plant growth, so much so I remove around half a 4 gallon bucket of plant every four weeks just to maintain form and not turn it into a jungle.
A small tropical aquarium I set up a few weeks ago, I used the Juwel grey rock 3D background which works really well with Seryu rock, the fish really stand out. A couple of weeks and it will be time to start pruning the plants.
The latest addition to our marine clientele, this is a 2300mm, 750ltr room divider with external weir. Very much enjoyed working with Sean Thomas Contruction Ltd who carried out the carpentry and building work, very professional and nothing was too much for them when we were designing the layout.
750ltr reef tank installed in June, this has been a very fast introduction of stock at client's request, to get to this stage would normally be around a year.
Something to consider if you are looking for a feature a little more unusual than a fish tank for your home, an indoor tropical pond replete with miniature waterfall and underwater lighting, hand made design, call Jason on 07885 759833 to discuss a design.
My Iwagumi Palledarium I set up in 2019.
Not much room left in this tank for corals, any new additions require planning permission.
This 700ltr set up did not start life as a reef tank, I took it on in at the end of 2020 as a plain, un-aquascaped blank canvas, the plan was to run it as a fish only system, but after a year the client had caught the coral bug and I went about upgrading it for inverts, adding extra equipment. A year on and things are really blooming.
A year has passed since I installed this Iwagumi planted tank, the lawn is Micranthemum Micranthemoides and is now an even 2" thick across the whole base, I periodically go in with angled scissors and trim it. At the far end Java Fern has colonised a large single piece of mopani wood and for a splash of colour, a red lotus lily bursts from the Micranthemum.
I took this 750l tank on in December 2020, although set up, the installers had placed just a handful of ocean Rock for decor and no fish, so I emptied the tank and aquascaped it using a mixture of live/ synthetic live rock and dead reef bones for the branching, it started out as a fish only system but in the last 18 months has slowly morphed into a reef tank, I'm pleased I scaped it this way as there are plenty of hardpoints and outcrops to fix the corals to.
A very protective pair of Angels have decided to lay their eggs bang in the middle of the tank completely exposed, thus all the other fish have had to make do with bunching up at either end, I've kept 3 pairs of angels in here for 4 years and all 3 breed in cycles on a regular basis, note how the othe angels know to stay away from the brooding pair.
The humble Cherry Barb, this is a species many people overlook when buying fish in a shop, often a drab olive colour you can understand why, but get them in your tank, give them a month or so on a good diet and a well planted environment and POW! the males will go this lovely brick red colour, I think they work so well with the red ludwigia too. # tropicalaquarium

This is a new installation that was set up in December, I'm using the D&D optical phone lens in this video as we are running a very high blue spectrum on the lighting. It's only been a few months but the frags are growing week by week beginning to fill the scape out with colour.
I love working on this tank, such a lovely balance between fish and plant, the red hi-fin swords have definitely stolen the show here, absolute knockouts #tropicalaquariummaintenance #aquariumdesign #plantedaquarium
Oswald doing a good impression of a hungry hippo, man this fish can eat, satsumas, strawberries, bananas, grapes, broccoli and sweetcorn his favourites, though at 32 he now likes me to peel his banana and hold it for him.
There are two aesthetics when maintaining your reef tank, keeping a clinical, cleaned back or letting it grow with a view to developing lovely coralline algae, the downside to this is a couple of years of rather unattractive brown and green algae left untouched before it develops. This client has always liked the former but as the corals have grown Its getting harder to clean without breaking them. So one thing I find is by sticking on frags of green, red and purple montepora, the back will take on a beauty of its own and add depth as the frags grow into multi-layered plates. Green star polyp is another great choice to use.
A 270 gallon African Cichlid room divider I installed last year, a great compromise if your budget does not stretch to cover a Marine system. Call Jason on 07885 759833 to enquire about having something like this in your home

Now at 12 weeks, the late introduction of the micranthemum had not impeded its growth at all and it is aggressively making headway into the hairgrass zones that I will have to control.
Lovely batch of mature corals ready for sale including SPS coral gardens on large live rocks, call Jason on 07885 759833 to get prices and reserve or arrange a viewing by appointment.
Another Malawi installation, these fish are becoming more and more popular with their marine-like appearance and hardy constitution. Despite the heaviness of the ocean rock, we were able to form delicate arches by using aquarium cement, the process is quite time consuming as each level must set before building up but it offers good aesthetic results.
Its hard to gauge from this video, the size of this tank that we have maintained for the last 6 years, the porthole is 4' in diameter but behind it is a 6' x 2' x 5' high tank, the whole system is impressively set in the wall at the top of a grand staircase.
Apologies for cloudy water, this tank has just been serviced so a little shaken up. A pair of proud first time parents guarding their eggs, a little on the thick side maybe as of all the places to pick as a spawning site, they choose the algae magnet. Thanks to them I had to do de-algae with a scraper!
