It's HOT today at a temperature of 41Β°C.
Please take care of your pets. If you are feeling the heat, then they are too.
Note that your pet may not want to eat or will eat a reduced amount of food today. This is normal if there are no clinical signs of illness. Metabolic demand decreases in hot weather. Serve smaller portions or cooling meals like cooled meat stock or species appropriate ice lollies and frozen kongs etc.

Doing fresh on a budget. January is tough for many people financially, so here's some options to help with the pet food budget. The last one is controversial.
Have you done any of these, or do you have other options? Let me know in the comments.
Some tips:
1. Keep liver to a bare minimum. I know it's cheap, but your pet only needs a little due to it being so nutrient dense.
2. Be kind to yourself, and it's OK to provide other (cheaper) options at times.
3. Tinned fish is good enough
4. Eggs are so wonderful and don't cost much. Don't underestimate the nutritional value of eggs.
5. Go ahead and add kibble to fresh or fresh to kibble. We do the best we can, and there's no judgement in making some changes.
These options are not balanced and only to be fed for a few meals per week. Also, not to be fed for consecutive meals. These may not be applicable for pets with medical issues, so consult with your nutritionist before making changes.

A new year, a new pet. Will go into more detail below, but first, I want to wish all fresh feeding enthusiasts a Happy New Year! 4) Wow, 2025, in just a day!
I hope you are having a great festive period and ready to implement more pet nutrition changes this year. This is what I meant by "a new year, a new pet." I'm hoping more people will start making small changes so their pets can have a better lease on life and feel like a whole new pet. Wouldn't that be awesome?
Want some inspiration/tips for your pets nutrition? Let me know what you are struggling with, and I will respond with some insight.
Include your pets wellness into your 2025 goals. This can include weight loss (or gain), performance nutrition, starting to cook for your pet, adding a little fresh or going completely fresh, and managing a medical condition through fresh foods. The options are endless.
Here's my goals for my pets' diets this year:
1. Start doing more raw meaty bones and enrichment feeds (I reduced this due to time constraints, budget, and health reasons)
2. Add more variety to their bowls. Just like the image, which is truly inspirational to me.
3. Provide more support for their illnesses with novel proteins and holistic treatments.
Will be sharing my 2025 plans for social engagement soon. Can't wait to support you and your pet!

Happy weekend!!!
It's been a week of unexpected challenges for my family. So we really need this weekend. And it's Friday the 13th, yikes!
After a 3 day unplanned emergency admission for my baby (50km from where we live) to moving house, all in 1 week.
Hope you enjoy this weekend and get some quality time with your pet's.
Be kind to people as you never know what they are going through.
Lots of love β€οΈ

Listen up, if you are serving chicken breast.
Using chicken breast as the main proportion of the diet can be dangerous as it leads to nutritional deficiencies.
Let me know in the comments if you knew this about chicken breast?
I get it. It's a popular cut of meat as it's not messy, easily accessible and most pets really love it. However, it's the least nutrient dense cut of meat, and this poses a risk of reduced nutrients for your pet. It's also a very expensive cut of meat.
The solution:
Use more 'exotic' cuts of meats such as heart, lung, gizzard, etc. These are cheaper and super nutritious for your pet.
The liver is a great addition, BUT excessive quantities over time can cause toxicity build up where the body can not handle the amount of specific nutrients absorbed. Keep liver to a minimum and increase muscle meats.
Remember to keep to ONLY 1/4 of the bowl if adding ingredients to kibble. Anymore than this, you would need a nutritionally balanced recipe.
Will you be making a swopping out the chicken breasts now? You can thank me later for saving you some money while improving your pet's nutrition ππ.

Ever wondered about the types of pet food and what is best to feed?
Let me know if you learned anything from this infographic posted by the . I was shocked to see semi moist was below kibble.
In RSA we don't have all these options and mainly have kibble, canned, semi moist (pouches), cooked and raw. Please ensure your homemade raw or cooked foods are nutritionally balanced.
What do you feed?

Here's Willow asking you to be kind to people and have some patience with everyone you meet. You never know what they are going through.
December is stressful and overwhelming, with everyone trying to get so much done before the year end. Take a breath and be present in the moment (your pet can show you how to do this).
Oh, and she also wants you to know that fresh foods are super yummy!
Happy festive season!

Comment 'KIBBLE' for an exclusive discount code to be sent to your inbox [IG only].
Kibble is here to stay and in some cases it is the only food people can serve. I will never judge anyone for feeding kibble as I fed kibble for a long time as well.
Here is some info you need to know about kibble. I share more in my curated online course, created just for you. In the course you learn how to choose the right kibble, how to understand nutrient tables and ingredients as well as the types of toppers you can add to the bowl. Pet advent calendars
Are you thinking of getting these cute treats and celebrating the festive season with your pet?? Well...DON'T DO IT.
Please read my disclaimers at the end of the post.
These treats contain non species appropriate ingredients and often can cause gastric upsets which leads to get visits over December (which no one needs). The storage of these treats are also a concern and for it to be shelf stable in our climate there's preservatives added and limited moisture.
What you can do instead is serve dehydrated meats and fresh treats daily as your advent calendar tradition. You can also make your own calendar or use little boxes that you have at home to hide the treats.
A really awesome idea I saw online was an advent activity jar and every day your pet can choose something special e.g. dog park, beach, play ball, food treat etc etc.
I will be sharing more about advent calendars in my stories.
Disclaimer:this post is about pet store and supermarket advent calendars using processed treats. It is not directed at a specific brand, image in the post is used for informative purposes only.

The 2 images may not look vastly different, but they are to the trained eye. Here's what I see:
1. A leaner physique.
2. Better muscle to fat distribution.
3. Better development of the skeletal system, so no injuries during activities.

Tomorrow will be my last consult for 2024, and what a year of consultations this has been.
I initially wanted to close off on the 10th December as I do every year, but I decided to close earlier and focus on submitting the last reports and recipes. Support clients are still able to get in touch with me, I just won't take on new cases until Jan 2025.
This year has brought all sorts of cases, some easy and some challenging, but every pet I have assisted (and their parent) has shaped me into the nutrition coach I want to be. In helping you, I have gained so much, new methodologies, long hours of research, and different approaches to the same problem. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to coach you and learn from your cases.
It is with immense pride that I'm closing off 2024 by having assisted 76 pet parents (I'm not counting the pets as some are multi pet homes). This gives me so much joy, and I'm looking forward to offering even more value to you in 2025.
My online courses will still be available over the festive season for those wanting to use their holiday time to gain some valuable insight.

While fish is a great addition to the diet, it's important to feed the right fish.
Tuna is high in mercury and other heavy metals due to bioaccumulation. Comment 'Tuna' if you want me to dive deeper into bioaccumulation.
I prefer feeding the following fish:
1. Sardines tinned or fresh
2. Mackerel
3. Hake
4. Salmon
5. Tinned pilchards
Remember fish is good...but in moderation. Get in touch via DM to ensure your pet is getting the right amount of fish in their diet (I'm looking at you kitty parentsππ).

Let me know in the comments how often you vaccinate and why? Do you have a customised vaccination plan for your pet?
Annual boosters have become the norm. However, you do have a choice on this, and the SA veterinary council guidelines stipulate boosters to be done every 3 years. It's the vaccine manufacturer that indicates annual shots (wonder why??).
Vaccines are essential, but overvaccinnating is what causes health issues for your pets. My 2 girls got Parvo AFTER the vaccine, which thankfully they survived.9 After that, I have researched everything I am told.
I also detox them after any vaccine to help their livers process the toxins.
The choice to vaccinate is a personal decision, and while I believe in initial vaccines for puppies and kitten, I encourage my clients to consider titre testing after the initial vaccines.
It's also helpful to do a risk analysis for your pets to ensure you are mitigating any risks identified. Mine are low risk for these diseases as they are indoors and don't associate with other pets. Your vet should partner with you to develop a vaccine plan for your pet.
