TRIGGER STACKING – WHEN BEHAVIOUR HAPPENS “OUT OF THE BLUE”
We’ve all had those days when nothing seems to go right and one frustrating thing after another happens, leaving us feeling wound up, stressed and ready to explode at the next unsuspecting person who dares to ask us something. This “unsuspecting” person may think we have a serious behaviour problem or need anger management coaching, when the truth is that we’ve just had a really bad day and don’t usually behave like this at all.

Dogs are no different and a behaviour that seems completely out of character or happens “out of the blue” is often caused by “trigger stacking”.

A trigger may be anything that increases a dog’s stress levels and has a negative impact on their emotional, mental or physical state. These may be small things that we may not even notice or seem insignificant to us, but they are all adding to an increasing “stack” of things that may end in a “trigger”.

When stress levels reach a certain point, the next stressful event, however small, may cause a reaction that is completely unexpected.

Instead of just focusing on a particular behaviour and seeing it as a problem that needs to be prevented, take a step backwards, look at the bigger picture, look at events, circumstances or environmental factors that may have played a role in causing that particular behaviour.

Being aware of potential stressors and allowing your dog time to decompress, relax and unwind can often make all the difference between “normal behaviour” and a behaviour that seems completely out of character.

BRAIN UNDER CONSTRUCTION!
The challenges of teenage dogs
There’s a saying that parents who have gone through the teenage years with their off spring will relate to - “Parents with teenagers understand why some animals eat their young!”

Many dog owners are unaware that dogs also go through a teenage stage and are frustrated and unprepared for the changes this brings. It’s a sad reality that this is the age that many dogs are surrendered to shelters as their owners no longer “like” the way their dogs behave, can’t handle them and give up on them.

The teenage brain is going through many changes. Think of it as being “rewired”. The rewiring process can cause some parts not to work at all or only work sometimes. Some parts work too much with too much current and new wires cause unexpected results.

There are many similarities to the changing human teenage brain. There’s a valid scientific reason why car insurance premiums for young adults under 25 are more expensive. The brain is not fully matured – irrational decisions, risk taking, poor choices and accidents are more likely to happen.

Be patient, understanding and most of all consistent with your teenage dog. Don’t give up on them. They are feeling just as frustrated as we are. Being aware of what is happening in their brain as it develops to full maturity helps us to be more accepting. Remember that this is just a phase and it will get better.

Please respect other dogs space.

Those of you who have a reactive or fearful dog, or even one with health issues such as recent surgery, know this all too well.

The concept of dominance in dog training is a harmful myth that has been debunked by modern science. It is based on an outdated understanding of wolf behaviour that has been discredited by more recent research.

The idea that dogs are constantly seeking to establish dominance over their owners is not only incorrect but can lead to abusive training practices that harm the dog-human relationship.

It can also lead to ineffective training methods that rely on punishment and intimidation rather than positive reinforcement and clear communication.

By recognising that dogs are social animals that thrive on cooperation and positive reinforcement, we can build stronger bonds with them and create a more positive and effective training experience.

If you thinking about any form of dog training. It's wise to investigate the professional. Ask questions? Don't fall into the trap where pop culture dog training shows have clouded your judgement based on 45 minutes of viewing time to show you an end result. Your dog needs your ability to make decisions based on their well-being both emotionally and physically .

Today's PSA is brought to you on behalf of trainers everywhere who want you to know our choice to avoid the use of punishment isn't based on some rainbow & sunshine outlook on the world. It's based on our commitment to studying what science has learned - and continues to learn - about this incredible species we bring into our world rather than sticking to folklore & the "way it's always been done". When you know better, you do better.

This infographic needs very little words.

We don’t learn good behaviours through fear. We simply learn how to avoid consequences and to appease.

Fear in our dogs is not always taken seriously, with so many videos floating round social media that get a few laughs.

We wouldn’t laugh if a child cowered in fear. We would take action, show concern and the same should go for our dogs.

We have the power to motivate, provide clarity and guide. We should never waste that on scare tactics or intimidation.

Comoliments of the season one and all. This seemed like an apt post to start the New Year. Trainers train you to build upon the foundation they teach you to put in place. It ultimately remains your responsibility to ensure that you continue to set your dogs up for success. Let 2023 be the year you build solid relationships with your pets.

While this should be obvious, it’s unfortunately anything but.

Owners, before you spend your money, please be aware of how the training process works. You’re paying us to lay a foundation and to then train you how to build on it and maintain it.

Dogs will happily “forget” all they know if not held to the standard of “remembering” by those they live with daily.

“Fixes” may look impressive initially, but they fall apart all too quickly if the trainer they learned from isn’t replaced by the trainer they live with.

What a milestone NSW!!!! 🐾🐾🐾🐾

A MONUMENTAL MILESTONE FOR ALL CREATURES, GREAT AND SMALL 💙💚

Yesterday, amendments to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (POCTAA) were passed in NSW Parliament. These changes will prevent people convicted of serious cruelty offences from owning, breeding, or working for a business relating to animals.

For many years, we have been working alongside animal welfare groups to strengthen animal cruelty laws in NSW. We are incredibly pleased to see these progressive changes being made to POCTAA, which align with community expectations and will further protect the welfare of animals across the state.

The passing of this bill would not have been possible without the support of the NSW Parliament and the animal-loving community. These reforms are a testament of what we can achieve when we work collaboratively to protect all creatures, great and small.

The Prohibitions for Convicted Persons Bill 2022 will come into effect on 1 January 2023, and the full details of the bill can be read below:
