North West Animal Shelter We are a registered charity. Our mandate is to operate an animal shelter to serve the Bulkley Valley, to rehome abused and abandoned animals.

What do you actually do for animals? We work with the Town of Smithers to rehome impounded dogs that are not claimed. We foster and adopt rescue dogs and cats both locally and throughout BC and Alberta. We have sent dogs to new homes as far away as Philidelphia and Juno. We fund raise to make sure our programs are funded and money is available to operate the shelter. We provide outreach to the com

munity by visiting schools and providing education about animal welfare. We offer spay and neutering assistance program to those who would otherwise not be able to afford the full cost. We have formed relationships with nine outside rescue groups who post available animals on their web sites, and/or take them into their programs, or connect us directly to adoptive families. We assist to screen potential adopters. We assist with photos, transportation to the airport and to veterinary appointments. We help to assess, exercise, train, and bathe rescued dogs.

FOR ADOPTION: Our GEMSTONE kittens are a group of fun and adorable little babies looking for loving forever families. These babies arrived in a tote along with their momma and two adolescents cats. Their rough start to life hasn’t got them down! They got to spend a few weeks in a loving foster home learning about the kindness of humans and they are now in the process of weaning and ready to find families to cuddle and play with. These babies are comfortable around other cats and have very limited experience with dogs. They will come with spay/neuter contracts in place and are up to date on vaccines and parasite control. For more information on our adoption fees or to find our adoption application head over to our website www.NWAS.ca

FOR ADOPTION: KLAUS is a large approximately 6 year old male looking for a forever family that enjoys cuddles. This big boy was hanging around a property as a stray on and off for 5 years before the property owners were able to catch him and bring him to us. Klaus wasted no time being nervous when he was brought to the shelter, he was instantly looking for snacks and soaking up all the attention he could get. Klaus loves to be held, snuggled and brushed… they all make him feel loved and secure. When we are busy working and not giving Klaus attention he is not afraid call us over but he is not overly vocal the rest of the time. He has been quite good with the other cats we’ve introduced him to so far and we think he could be very happy having some feline companions in his forever family. Klaus is not as comfortable with dogs and has been fairly reactive towards them in His testing. We feel he has likely had to defend himself while on his own and that he will be happiest without a dog in his home. We’ve not had a chance to test Klaus with small children yet but he is so confident and friendly that we feel he will do well with everyone that is gentle and kind. Klaus seems to be very happy indoor only right now, he could enjoy an enclosed catio or he could eventually be indoor/outdoor in a safe environment. Klaus has been neutered and vaccinated and he is up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a large love bug, apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet KLAUS.

We are having a Sunday Funday at Total Pet Smithers on January 26th from 11-2. Come on down and meet this super sweet litter of adorable Australian Cattle Dog mix pups. Their mom looks purebred Cattle Dog, dad is suspected to be the neighbour’s Anatolian Shepherd Mix. These babies are taking after dad in size as they are expected to mature between 70 and 90lbs. We have a good mix of spirited, high energy adventure buddies and more low key camping and nature walk type pals. 4 females and 2 males. Pups come up to date on parasite control and vaccinations and the spay or neuter is included in the adoption fee, these pups will be CHEAPER than getting a free pup and paying for all the vetting yourself. If you want to be able to bring a pup home right from the event get your application on ASAP, if you just want to meet them and see what you think we will have applications available on site as well but there will be home checks etc required before they can head home.

FOR ADOPTION: CURLY is a 15 month old miracle looking for the most special forever family. This sweet boy came in out our care as a young kitten along with his huge family group. He ended up loosing three siblings over the course of a couple months to the once incurable disease FIP. Through the process of dealing with those siblings we learned about a new drug that has been used in the UK and Australia for some time to treat FIP and was just coming available in Canada. The stars aligned for Curly as we already had drugs on order for one of his siblings when he started showing symptoms and was diagnosed with FIP. The drugs arrived too late for Curly’s brother but came just in time for Curly. Treatment started with painful injections and continued with daily pills and lots of bloodwork. It took 6 months of dedicated treatment and then 3 months of observation period but we are extremely happy to say that Curly is officially cleared of FIP. He is not at risk of developing FIP again and this is a genetically mutated disease so it is not something that could be passed to other animals. Through all of Curlys painful treatments and annoying bloodwork he has remained and incredibly loving and affectionate little cat. Curly gives the best hugs and loves to give kisses when he is cuddling. He is excellent with people of all ages. Curly has lived in a foster home with very calm, uninterested dogs and did well. He could live with those types of dogs again but would be terrified of a very rambunctious dog. Curly is quite dominant with other cats and, due to his illness, hasn’t had much socializing with cats outside of his family group. Curly would be thrilled to be an only cat where he can spend his days giving and receiving all of the cuddles. He could learn to live with another cat if they are quite submissive and not overly playful. Curly is looking for an indoor only home as he has no experience outdoors and absolutely no survival skills. Curly has now been neutered and his is up to date on vaccines and parasite control. If you’ve been looking for you’re very own little miracle apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet CURLY

JoJo(see separate post) and Sammy are looking for their forever home!
Their former owners were not able to continue caring for them and abandoned them on the streets. Both dogs were living on the streets for a month, foraging for food and hunting neighborhood cats to survive. The former owners never returned to reclaim them, so some local residents got involved.

Sammy
Sammy is a male and appears to be a Poodle mix or Irish Wolfhound mix. He is about 75 #, significantly smaller than Irish Wolfhounds. He seems 2-3 years old.

Sammy is submissive. He readily avoids conflict with JoJo and other dogs. He has been attacked by other male dogs prior to being neutered and has defended himself, but he has consistently looked for ways to separate himself from threats. Prior to being neutered he has been introduced to both un-neutered male dogs and female dogs. Intact males have not treated him well. He has not had any conflict with female dogs. He has not been introduced to other dogs since being neutered, nor has he been introduced to other neutered males.
While in foster care he has not been introduced to cats or other small animals.
He has not been introduced to small children. But based upon his gentle nature, it is not believed that children would be a problem. He is a large strong dog though and plays fetch, retrieving with vigor. Caution should be used that he doesn’t accidentally knock over very small children or elderly people.
He quickly responds to discipline. He is intelligent and a fast learner. He knows how to sit on command, is easy to put on a leash, and does well on a leash.
While in foster care he has always been either on a leash or in an enclosed pen while outdoors. It is unknown and untested as to whether he is trained to come on command while off leash outdoors. He quickly responds to “come” while indoors.
Sammy is affectionate and prefers to be by your side, being petted, getting rubbed, and praised. He is gentle and well behaved. He is house trained and has not peed in the house or his kennel at night.
While in foster care Sammy has been sleeping indoors in a kennel. During the day he has been in a very large outdoor enclosure with room to run. Due to his long fur, he does well being outside in cold weather.
During his time on the streets he has roamed considerable distances from his original home. It is recommended that his new home have a well fenced yard or large outdoor kennel run.

If you are interested in meeting either JoJo or Sammy, or want more information, email [email protected]. Both dogs have been neutered, vaccinated for rabies and treated for internal and external parasites.

JoJo
JoJo is a male and appears to be a yellow Labrador / Husky mix. He is about 75 #. He seems 2-3 years old.
JoJo is confident and outgoing. He is somewhat independent and is eager to explore and check out new things. Even while on the leash he has to smell everything and checkout what is going on around himself.
Prior to being neutered he was introduced to a couple other intact males. A tremendous dog fight ensued and he has not been allowed around other un-neutered male dogs since. He has been introduced to several female dogs and got along fine with them. JoJo would do better in a home without small animals, such as cats or chickens. Although he has not been introduced to small children, it is believed he would be fine due to his gentle nature. However, he is a large strong dog and may accidentally knock small children or elderly people over.

He quickly responds to discipline. He is intelligent and a fast learner. He knows how to sit on command, is easy to put on a leash, and does well on leash. He does have some of the Husky sled dog tendency to want to pull but can be quickly made to heel as well.

JoJo is affectionate, loves being petted, will readily gently lick your face, and relishes getting rubbed, and praised. He is gentle and well behaved. He is house trained and has not peed in the house or his kennel at night.
JoJo does have a bit of an independent streak where he would enjoy being out exploring, as being by your side being petted. Because of this he is a bit more susceptible to roaming, but may not be so much this way after being neutered. He has not been tested off leash.

If you are interested in meeting either JoJo or Sammy (separate post), or want more information, email [email protected]. Both dogs have been neutered, vaccinated for rabies and treated for internal and external parasites.

Tiki is currently residing at Total Pet. Go and say hello!

FOR ADOPTION: TIKI is a sweet, gentle approximately 3 year old female looking for her very special family. This little lady showed up under a rural home with her brood of young, scared and hungry babies just looking for a little safety and warmth. The little family was very lucky that the people in the home reached out to find the cats help instead of just shooing them on. We were full at the time but a friend of the people and good supporter of ours stepped up to foster this kitty family until the kittens were old enough to wean and we had room. The cat family was terrified and needed to be trapped to be brought into foster care but once their they decompressed and their fun and sweet personalities started to shine. Tiki found her kittens safety and a chance at lives as well loved family members, now that the kittens are weaned it is time for Tiki to find that same stability and love. Tiki is a friendly and affectionate cat once she gets to know you. She really enjoys gentle pets and cuddles and will often be found chatting away while being pet. She’s been fairly low key while in our care, preferring to find a comfy spot to watch the other cats play vs joining in herself. Tiki would happily pair with another calm and friendly cat but is not looking for a wrestling buddy at this time. She was in foster in a busy dog kennel and does not seem to be at all bothered by easygoing pooches. Loud, rowdy children are overwhelming for Tiki but she is very open to making friends with kids that can be calm and gentle. Currently Tiki is a low energy, low maintenance girl just looking for a home with comfy spots to lay and watch the world go by. Her more energetic side could come to the surface once she is settled in a home. Tiki is very happy indoor only but she may come to enjoy a sunny afternoon in the catio. Tiki is now spayed, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a chill little lady apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet TIKI

FOR ADOPTION: Our MOUNTAIN PEAK puppies: SEATON, EVELYN, ATNA, THOEN, HARVEY and HUDSON are ready to find their very special families. These beautiful babies are 14 weeks old and expected to mature in the 70-90lb range. Their mother is an Australian Cattle Dog and their presumed father is an Anatolian Shepherd Mix. These sweet babies are already close to 20lb each and so incredibly sweet and smart. They have a wide range of personalities from the timid and extremely submissive to the dominant and bossy and everything in between. We have a little something for every experience level. The entire litter are going to be a minimum of medium energy dogs when they are mature and they will make excellent hiking, trail riding, snowshoeing, and skiing partners. The more active of the bunch will even keep up mountain biking or downhill skiing once their bodies have fully developed. Every one of of Mountain Peak Pups are excellent cuddlers and they are quite comfortable with other dogs and children. None are showing precursors to separation anxiety or prey drive. This litter is already well on their way to being house broke, they are only pooping inside overnight and even then it’s minimal. They were vet checked this past Friday and found to be very healthy. They are now vaccinated, up to date on parasite control and ready to find their happily ever after a! If you’ve been looking for a large adventure buddy that also knows how to cuddle like a champion apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet the MOUNTAIN PEAK PUPPIES

FOR ADOPTION: HOLLY is an absolute adorable 6 month old female looking for a forever home to fill with love and life. This sweet little lady arrived in a tote with a mother and her litter of four kittens and another adolescent cat. Despite their traumatic trip into town, the whole group has been nothing but friendly since they arrived. Holly is just the cutest little thing. She adores being pet and cuddled and really is very much still in her playful kitten era. Holly enjoys batting around bell toys and crinkle balls and would be thrilled to have a companion who is into play wrestling. She is very comfortable and friendly with other cats, non reactive towards calm dogs and would enjoy some respectful but fun kiddos. Holly has been very happy indoor only but could also learn to adventure on harness or enjoy a safe and secure catio or back yard. She is spayed, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a petite little lady to light up you’re entire home, apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet HOLLY.

FOR ADOPTION: JEAN LUC is a very sweet 1 year old male looking for a kind and gentle forever family. Jean Luc was abandoned with a few other lovely cats in a condemned house. They were very lucky that caring citizens took it upon themselves to rescue the cats when we had room. Jean Luc is initially a little shy with new people but once he knows you’re friendly he loves to soak up pets and affection. He’s an easy going guy that currently seems more interested in making himself cozy beds to snuggle in than engage in rowdy play. Of course, that could change as he settles into his forever home. Jean Luc Has been very good with the other cats he came in with (likely his family group) and non reactive towards new cats and dogs. He is a little overwhelmed by loud, busy children but good with calmer kids. Jean Luc is quite happy indoor only but could adjust to catio life or being indoor/outdoor in a super safe environment. He is neutered, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a gentle new friend apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet Jean Luc

FOR ADOPTION: INCA is a kind and gentle adult male looking for an equally kind and gentle forever family. Handsome Inca is the last of the group of cats we rescued from an abandoned home in Smithers. He came to us fearful but always gentle and he quickly came around to being pet and brushed. Inca loves attention and could sit to be pet for hours on end but he will not demand you give him affection. Inca is the type to sit back and wait until it’s obvious you want to share your time with him. We do not have a great age estimate on Inca, all we can say for sure is he is over 2 years old. His teeth have all come in so we cannot age him that way and he came to us neutered so we cannot make an estimate off of his testosterone filled jowels. What we can say is, he is a polite and loving little guy that will make an easy addition to most households. Inca has been very good with the other cats he came in with and was a calm influence on when she was her most fearful. He did come in suffering from the feline herpes virus and should only live with fully vaccinated cats going forward. Inca has also been non reactive to calm, friendly dogs. He is a little weary of loud and rowdy children but could happily live with kids that are on the quieter side and know to be gentle with animals. He is neutered, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a gentle, affectionate new friend apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet INCA.

ADOPTED

FOR ADOPTION: SAM is a super sweet two year old female looking for her forever snuggle buddy. Sam has been exceptionally well loved for her entire life and only came into our care due to her previous family’s crippling allergies. Sam is a sweet girl that is good with kids, comfortable with friendly dogs and good with other cats after a slow introduction period. Sam is so over shelter life and ready to get herself back into a loving home. This is a girl that is used to lounging all day and snuggling her nights away tucked in beside her bff and she’s looking to get back to that lifestyle ASAP. Sam has been indoor only her entire life and would be best suited to staying that way. She could also learn to love the catio lifestyle or harness training to go on some adventures. Sam is now spayed, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a new BFF apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet SAM.
