North West Animal Shelter We are a registered charity. Our mandate is to operate an animal shelter to serve the Bulkley Valley, to rehome abused and abandoned animals.
(17)

What do you actually do for animals? We work with the Town of Smithers to rehome impounded dogs that are not claimed. We foster and adopt rescue dogs and cats both locally and throughout BC and Alberta. We have sent dogs to new homes as far away as Philidelphia and Juno. We fund raise to make sure our programs are funded and money is available to operate the shelter. We provide outreach to the com

munity by visiting schools and providing education about animal welfare. We offer spay and neutering assistance program to those who would otherwise not be able to afford the full cost. We have formed relationships with nine outside rescue groups who post available animals on their web sites, and/or take them into their programs, or connect us directly to adoptive families. We assist to screen potential adopters. We assist with photos, transportation to the airport and to veterinary appointments. We help to assess, exercise, train, and bathe rescued dogs.

You all may have been wondering why you’ve stopped seeing posts about Ally. It is because she has found her forever foster home! Ally is absolutely thrilled with her new life and happily celebrating Christmas inside with a family for the first time ever.

Here are a few words from Ally’s new momma.

“Just wanted to give up a short update on how Ally is. We have settled into a routine that is comfortable for both of us. Her personality has come out completely now and she is such loving, happy dog and I know this sounds crazy, but a great sense of humour. She is getting more confident and does try to challenge my authority sometimes but that is a good thing, she feels safe enough to do so. Nothing major, but if she does not want to get back in the truck after a ride and walk, she will sniff around for a while. I think the biggest change is she does not inhale her food anymore and eats slowly and sometimes she will walk away from it and go back. She is not a morning dog, so she just stays in our bed until she is ready to get up and does not hop up as soon as I move. We walk every day and have many adventures together and when I come home from work, I come home to the best greeting ever. Her nickname is Wiggle Butt as her tail never stops. She is blessing and gives so much love. I feel so lucky and grateful I am her human and she is loved with all my heart.

Lots of love Margie and Ally”

December 9th is the International Day of Veterinary Medicine. We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the three amazing veterinary hospitals that service our beautiful Bulkley Valley. Without the amazing support and compassion of everyone that works at these three wonderful clinics NWAS would not be able to do what we do. So today, and every day, we thank Babine Animal Hospital, Smithers BC Vet to Pet Mobile Services and Bulkley River Veterinary Services LTD for the amazing work they do supporting all of the animals in our communities.

Sweet, beautiful AVERY is the newest kitten on the block looking for her forever family. This adorable little girl was found in the engine of a truck about 5 weeks ago with a major facial injury. Her lower lip had been pulled loose from her lower jaw. The family that found Avery reached out to NWAS and when no owner was found for her she was signed over to our care and brought into Babine Animal Hospital where she had her lip stitched back on her jaw. Avery then Spent a few weeks in foster care while she healed and she is now completely back to normal and ready for her forever home. This resilient little lady is estimated at 15 weeks old and she is so incredibly cuddly and gentle. She’s excellent with other cats and has had limited experience with dogs but could adjust to life with a calm and gentle pooch. If you’re interested in Avery you can find information on our adoption fees as well as our adoption application on our website www.NWAS.ca

Callista is currently residing at Total Pet! Now at the back of the store, by the dog wash. Go and say hello!

FOR ADOPTION: CALLISTA is an absolutely stunning 16 month old female looking for a fun forever home. This beautiful girl came into our care with her large family group consisting of three litters from two mommas, all suspected to have the same dad. Unfortunately a few of his siblings and half siblings became quite sick with a non-contagious genetic disease and we lost them. After consulting with experts in this disease from all over Canada we made a plan for how to handle the siblings who may or may not have carried the same genetic markers. We’ve now reached the point where we can confidently say that these remaining siblings are healthy and able to head into their forever homes. We will happily further discuss this genetic disease that effected some of the siblings with any successful applicants. Callista is a fun, vibrant young cat that enjoys playing, exploring and getting all the pets. She puts up with her large sibling group of cats and could learn to live with other cats. She is just as happy to hang out with respectful children as she is with adults and she is open to the idea of sharing a home with a calm and friendly dog. Callista is a communicative girl that is not afraid to ask for attention or snacks but she doesn’t chat without reason. She is used to having to compete with her siblings for one on one attention for the people around her, she is so looking forward to a home with more than Enough affection to go around. Callista seems to be a fairly low key girl that is more interested in watching her brothers play than joining in. She is looking for an indoor only home with a great window or catio for her to watch the world go by while her family is busy. Callista is spayed, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for fun young cat apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet CALLISTA

FOR ADOPTION: JAY is a very cuddly 2 year old male looking for his special forever family. Jay comes to us with a large group of cats that were abandoned at a well known home in the Smithers area. After kind locals took in the many of the bolder and more friendly cats NWAS came and got the rest. Although scared on intake Jay was very fast to come around and quickly became on the cuddliest cats we currently have at the shelter. Jay loves to climb into our arms for snuggles and pets and has a fun playful side. He was obviously a well loved pet at one point in His life and we would like to get him back to being one again. Jay came to us with a major upper respiratory infection that has been treated but, due to being unvaccinated previously, he does have feline herpes virus that will raise its ugly, eye watering head when he goes through periods of stress or low immunity. We have Jay on an inexpensive immune system booster to help keep him as his healthiest self. Jay is great with other cats but will need to live with fully vaccinated cats so he cannot pass along the feline herpes virus. Jay is quite comfortable with respectful children and would make a great family cat in a home with older kids (he does occasionally give love bites that little ones may not appreciate). He’s had minimal interactions with dogs but could live with a calm and gentle one. He could be very happy indoor only with lots of cuddle time or Jay could enjoy catio life. He could also be indoor/outdoor in the right environment. He is neutered, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a confident cuddle bug apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet JAY

FOR ADOPTION: DOVE is a beautiful approximately 1 year old female that comes to us from a well know abandoned home in the Smithers area. Kind locals were able to take in the bolder and more confident cats from this large group and NWAS took in the remaining cats once we had room. Dove was one of the most timid and reserved of the group when she arrived at the shelter and she is still a fairly quiet and shy girl. Despite her fear, Dove has always been gentle and kind. We’ve put her on a calming supplement that has helped her relax into her life at the shelter and Dove is now a girl that appreciates gentle head scratches and soft cozy blankets. She is looking for a quiet, mature family that will be able to give her the patience and understanding she needs to blossom into her full self. Dove would do very well with a confident and affectionate feline friend to help show her the ropes in her new environment. Dove has had very limited interactions with dogs so far. She could learn to live with a calm dog that is indifferent towards cats but she would be just as happy without them in her life. Due to Dove’s timid nature she is looking for an indoor only home. She is spayed, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a shy girl to bring out of her shell, apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet DOVE.

FOR ADOPTION: CAMERON, FERRIS and SLOANE are our adorable Ferris Bueller pups. These beautiful 11 week old babies are 3/4 Labrador and expected to mature in the 55-65lb range. All three pups are friendly, well handled babies that are going to fit in well with most family dynamics. They enjoy children (but do jump up quite a bit still) and are very eager to make all sorts of dog friends after they have received the second round of puppy vaccines. None of these pups are showing any signs of prey drive and they should be able to easily adjust to life with cats and farm critters if that is what their forever families have. They are friendly and affectionate with all people. Sloane is a little more reserved than her brave brothers but she’s quick to cuddle if you’re calm and gentle with her. This litter should mature in to medium to higher energy level dogs depending on what their families put into them and they are smart little cookies that will be super fun to train! The Ferris Bueller pups are making good progress towards their house training but they will still require dedication from their new homes to finish the process. They have been vet checked, have their first vaccines and are up to date on parasite control. If you’ve been looking for a fun loving new family member apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet the FERRIS BUELLER pups.

FOR ADOPTION: FLINT is an approximately 2 year old male that is looking for an understanding family to help him learn how to truly love. This stunning fella is part of a large group of cats that were abandoned in a well known home in the Smithers area. Many well meaning locals were able to catch some of the friendlier felines and NWAS came in and captured the last of the group once we had space. Flint was absolutely terrified of people when he first arrived but never mean. He likes to “turtle”, he hides under his blanket when he is feeling overwhelmed. We’ve spent countless hours earning this guys trust and teaching him that humans mean no harm. Thanks to the help of a calming supplement and the cats around Flint that are much bolder and more comfortable with humans, Flint has decided he is ready to accept love. The once terrified little turtle is now a timid cuddler that drools in pleasure when you find just the right spot behind his ears. He can still be found hiding under his pillow but when we remove the cover he is ready and willing to accept our love! Flint is still learning the finer points of human interaction such as not holding onto our hands with his mouth when we try to finish a petting session before he is ready. We think he will do best in a child free home until he has really gotten a grasp on this whole domestic pet thing. He was very happily living with a large group of other cats and we’ve found that he does watch the cats around him for cues in how to react to new situations, he would do very well with a bold feline role model in his new home. At this point Flint has had very minimal interactions with dogs but we think he could adjust to life with a very calm canine. He is neutered, vaccinated and up to date on parasite control. At this point Flint is looking for an indoor only environment but he could eventually transfer to indoor outdoor if he gains enough confidence in his new environment. If you’ve been looking for a little guy that will flourish with consistent, calm affection then apply today at www.NWAS.ca for a chance to meet FLINT.
