Our "Shifting Stereotypes" event yielded very interesting conversations. It was clear that we need to be intentional and deliberate in our actions to change our story.
The topic of "unconscious bias" was unpacked, and inclusiveness in the work place and the community was emphasised.
The panel which included President of the BWA, Mandisa Nkwanyana and Themba Seyisi kept the audience engaged. Thanks to Judith Haupt from Contract-SA and Phiko Peter from Allan Gray. Cape Town Chairperson, Lesley Bam said that she was very pleased with the attendance and the level of engagement. Hope you join us next time!

BWA Celebration of Women - Denise Stubbs

Meet Denise Belinda Stubbs, 51-year-old businesswoman who carries loads of charisma and passion as daughter, a wife, a sibling, and a mother. Denise is the CEO of Thokozani and the Human Resource Director at Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate.
She completed her schooling years in Pniel and Stellenbosch. She holds qualifications in Fashion, Art and Marketing and Human Resources. She has an absolute love for people especially the most vulnerable.

When asked what drives her, she mentions that she is driven by her core values, principles, and beliefs, which guides her decisions and actions. Denise is driven hard by her ambitions and passions, pushing them to pursue her dreams and excel in her chosen paths. She says nurturing and maintain meaningful relationships with loved ones and overcoming her obstacles are powerful motivators for her.
In the workplace she reminds herself that it is essential to recognize and respect the individuality of women and their unique aspirations, talents, and motivations.

Denise is driven by her desire to make a positive difference in her communities and the world of Agriculture and Tourism. She wants to become an advocate for social justice, gender equality, environmental causes, and any other issues close to their hearts, especially the people that society has left behind.

Denise shares that the day she married the love of her life and became a mother to her three beautiful daughters are her greatest accomplishment in life.
She is most proud of the many achievements throughout the years since she became an HR Officer at Diemersfontein and established Thokozani with her mentor David Sonnenberg. She transformed and empowered majority farmworkers which are today the shareholders in their business. She now successfully runs a business and feels privileged to share it with her staff. Denise is a role model to many and she mentions Thokozani as her community and greatest driving force. Thokozani bought 55% in the mother company Diemersfontein in 2021.

She has advanced in her career and has broken many barriers in a traditionally male-dominated industry. She has done this by pursuing and furthering her studies as an Entrepreneur with AWEC (African Women Entrepreneurship Cooperative) in Egypt and today being an Alumni. She completed her Manager Training Programme of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action with South Africa & The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. She was awarded one of two women in South Africa nominated for Top International Entrepreneurs award in Florida in the category of Agriculture and Tourism. Denise was the first woman of color awarded the Transformation and Diversity award in Western Cape Groot Constantia South Africa. And she is very proud to announce that she earned her majority shares in Thokozani through sweat equity!

When we asked her what advice she has for other women, who are the upcoming leaders, she says… “Remember, each person's path is unique, so be kind to yourself, and don't compare your journey to others. Embrace your individuality and strive to be the best version of yourself. With dedication, perseverance, and a positive mindset, you can achieve remarkable things and inspire others along the way.”

She concludes with this inspiring message to all women in South Africa "Empowerment knows no bounds, and in the vibrant heart of South Africa, women are the architects of change. With resilience as our cornerstone and unity as our foundation, we are rewriting the narrative of possibility. As we navigate the path ahead, let us join hands, lifting each other up and amplifying our voices.”

BWA Celebration of Women - Zakira Palekar

Zakira Palekar is a successful business owner, and a mother of four, who finds meaning in financing the education of children from disadvantaged homes.

Like many mothers, Zakira’s business skills were honed in direct sales. Her savvy savings made her the ideal investor when her husband, Abdul was ready to shift his hobby to a lucrative business idea. Having developed his own raw pet food diet under the guidance and tutelage of Dr Richard Patton, an acclaimed animal nutritionist in the USA, he saw the value of offering his product to the public.

In 2013, as Doggobone’s major investor and CFO, she partnered Abdul in taking their business to the next level. Together, they have become nationwide suppliers of award-winning raw pet food. In October 2017, they hosted an international symposium for pet nutrition with Dr Richard Patton, who hails from New Mexico. This was a huge success for the business and brand.

Doggobone constantly strives to improve their methods of manufacture, storage, and delivery of products to excite and delight their distributors, suppliers, and clients. Despite all this, Zakira’s proudest accomplishment is overcoming her childhood fear of dogs! And for that, her staffie Mira is most grateful.

Zakira’s perseverance and resilience paid off in 2018 when she was awarded the Businesswoman of the Year Award in the Entrepreneur Category of the BWA. She considers 2018 her lucky year, as this was also the year when they purchased property and set up their new factory.

Doggobone with a staff count of 35, was the first registered raw pet food company to have their products vet-recommended. Their main purpose is to offer good food for dogs and cats, offering a lifestyle change to healthy eating, a diet free from grains, preservatives, and colorants and full of natural ingredients.

The journey was not easy, and Zakira shares some valuable lessons:

• Whatever you want to do, first believe in the idea. Whether it is a product or a service, you must buy into it first before you can go out in the world and sell it.
• Never give up, believe in yourself, if ten doors close, one door will surely open for you.
• Learn everything about the industry you are in, not just locally, as international markets provide insightful trends. Look abroad to bring fresh ideas home rather than copy someone in your own town doing what you do.
• Value your staff as they are the backbone of your business as you will not survive without them.
• Give back to your community and help where you can, even if it’s just for one person. It’s one person’s life where you made a difference.
• There should be no limit as to what you want to do. Just do it!!

Zakira found it valuable to align herself with other businesswomen owners. She is a member of the BWA, as she believes that networking is vital and one gets to meet phenomenal women!!

She is looking forward to growing the brand abroad with some fresh new ideas in the making. She says “Watch this space!!”

“Live life to enjoy amongst the chaos. Take time out for yourself. Love what you do!!”

BWA Celebration of Women - Truida Prekel

It is a great privilege and honour to feature Truida, an inspiration to many. Truida has been a member of the BWA since the beginning. She is a true enabler of women and we continue to be inspired by her journey and her passion to improve any situation she encounters. Her special talent for creating empowering connections for so many who have crossed her path over the years is legendary.

Here is Truida's story...

"I am Truida Prekel. I can be described in many ways. South African woman, Afrikaans-speaking (though I mostly speak English professionally, and occasionally German). At 82, I work as Innovation and Change Facilitator, in communities and in women’s advancement.

My purpose is to make the world around me a better place by building bridges of mutual understanding and respect, and by sharing the unique SynNovation skills for collaborative creative problem-solving to address the many problems we have in South Africa.

I think my greatest accomplishment is my work over almost 6 decades to help create opportunities for women of all levels and backgrounds, and to build relationships across differences of race, age and gender. I have received various awards – including the Four Outstanding Young South Africans (FOYSA) Award in 1979 and the UNISA SBL gold medal as top student in the Master of Business Leadership (MBL) in 1977. But the real reward is seeing people change and grow, smile and laugh more, or hearing decades later that something that I shared or said, made a lasting difference.

And then a special contribution is that the BWA grew out of work that I did, and workshops I held at UNISA SBL in 1977 to 1981. In that way, with many other women leaders and role models, over almost 45 years, this women’s association has affected the lives of thousands of women (and I believe hundreds of men 😊 ) positively.

On lessons she can share, she says:

Lessons and learnings are always very personal – but I would say, try to make anyone feel better after they have interacted with you, than they felt before. Never stop listening and learning – we can learn from everyone we meet – even if it is how NOT to behave 😊. And take time out to think, be on your own, also to spend memory-making times with loved ones and friends. Be kind to yourself to recharge your energy!

I still wish to spread as widely as possible my knowledge of positive behaviours that create a welcoming climate for people and novel ideas; and to help more people to build positive self-esteem, that helps them to manage situations assertively – and not become either passive or aggressive.
I need to find ways to multiply the knowledge and reach wider, more diverse and younger audiences, either by spreading it digitally, getting access to schools and universities, and / or by writing the books everyone is nagging me to write…

I have been involved in various community initiatives over 6 decades – my late husband used to say I am a serial do-gooder: From promoting collaboration and safety in Muizenberg community (using our SynNovation way), to helping to establish Dialogue for Action, an inclusive network to promote collaboration, mutual support, ideas exchange and synergy among numerous NPOs, foundations and other civil society organisations country-wide.

Asked if she has a personal motto, she said:

I don’t really live by mottos and messages – I think if one senses a situation, considers carefully what facts are at hand, plans and acts positively to address issues or spread goodwill – you usually know intuitively what to do. But bear in mind both your own rights and needs – and those of others. So, fairness and kindness!"

We are truly fortunate that Truida continues to support the endeavours of the BWA and many other organisations.

"We salute you, Truida"!

BWA Celebration of Women - Debbie Owen

Debbie heads the award-winning STS Lawhill Maritime Centre (www.lawhill.org) and was appointed a Maritime Ambassador for the UN’s International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in 2015.

She has more than 30 years’ experience in the maritime industry and is a former business owner and award-winning editor of specialist (trade) magazines. Before moving into the field of high school-based maritime education in 2014, she worked in the Publishing, CSI, Marketing, PR and Communications fields. She spent more than 25 years working full time in a range of organisations – including international corporates and her own PR agency, Do Communicate – and has extensive experience in crisis communications.

Deeply inspired by the nation-building example of the late Nelson Mandela, Debbie’s passion for youth development and education – and her commitment to playing a more active role in building a more equitable South African society – led to the decision to close her PR business in 2014 and work-full time in education.

Debbie was part of the CSR team at international shipping line, Safmarine, who, in the early 1990s, worked with educationalists to develop Lawhill’s pioneering, industry-based maritime education programme for Grade 10s to 12s. The programme, which aims to address youth poverty and unemployment by giving young people the skills and knowledge they need to enhance their post-school employment prospects, celebrates 28 years of operation in 2023.

Before moving into the field of maritime education, Debbie spent more than 10 years assisting the Khayelitsha-based Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy which has produced some of South Africa’s top black cyclists. Velokhaya is a not-for-profit organisation which uses the sport of cycling (and the life lessons imparted to the youth via their involvement in sport) to address pressing social issues in under-served communities. Debbie spearheaded the formation the Velokhaya fundraising campaign which was launched in London on the eve of the 2007 Tour de France. Highlights of the campaign included having some of the world’s top cyclists raise money, via Tour de France stage wins, for the building of Velokhaya BMX Oval facilities. Today the Oval is home to several of South Africa’s top BMX and road cyclists.

Although no longer actively involved in Velokhaya, Debbie continues to maintain a close relationship with some of its young members, rendering assistance as time and resources permit.

Her nine years to date at the helm of Lawhill has brought many achievements, including winning a prestigious international award for best maritime education programme in Africa, Middle East and India. In 2022 the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) recognised her contribution to youth development when it presented her with the Imbokodo ‘Best Mentor’ award.

But no awards will ever compare to the immense satisfaction of watching shy young South Africans thrive within the Lawhill programme and leave school, confident and ready to make their mark in the world.

On a personal level, Debbie is a ‘rural girl’, raised on a maize and dairy farm in Mpumalanga. After school, she completed a three-year National Diploma in Public Relations and Communications and later moved to Cape Town to work as an editor of three specialist/industry magazines. Debbie is also a keen amateur photographer.
