A Little Dove Finds Hope

Sometimes, nature needs a helping hand. This baby dove was brought to EberVet Country Animal Clinic after falling from its nest, which couldn’t be located to return it safely.

Fortunately, our compassionate veterinary nurse, Sr Jeanette, stepped in to help. She has taken this little one under her wing. At home, Sr Jeanette already has another baby dove she is nurturing, and she plans to release them both into the wild once they can feed themselves.

It’s heartwarming to know that even the smallest creatures can find care and love when they need it most. Thank you, Sr Jeanette, for your dedication to giving these doves a second chance at life.

Beware of Grass Seeds – Eddie’s Story

Sweet little Eddie came to EberVet Country Animal Clinic with a painful ulcer on his eyelid. At first glance, the cause of his discomfort wasn’t obvious. However, during a thorough examination and cleaning, Dr Mel discovered the culprit—a tiny, sharp grass seed lodged under his eyelid.

These small but dangerous seeds had caused Eddie significant pain and damage. Thankfully, Dr Mel skillfully removed the grass seed, cleaned his eye, and sent Eddie home with medication to prevent infection. Eddie is now on the road to recovery!

Grass seeds might seem harmless, but they can cause major harm to our pets. These sharp seeds often get caught in fur and can burrow into the skin, ears, paws, and even eyes, leading to infections, ulcers, and other serious injuries.

How can you protect your pets?

Regular grooming: Brush your pet’s fur to remove any seeds.

Check after walks: Inspect your pet, especially in areas like ears, paws, and eyes.

Avoid areas with long grass during peak seed season.

By staying vigilant, you can help keep your furry friends safe from these hidden dangers. If you notice any swelling, limping, or irritation, don’t wait—book a vet visit immediately.

Let’s keep our pets happy, healthy, and grass-seed-free!

Planning a Holiday with Your Pets? Here’s What You Need to Know!

Whether your furry friends are joining you on your adventure or staying in a kennel while you're away, here are some essential tips to ensure their safety and happiness this holiday season:

1️⃣ Name Tag: Ensure your pet wears a collar with a name tag displaying your contact number.
2️⃣ Microchip: Double-check your pet’s microchip details are up to date and registered correctly.
3️⃣ Vaccinations: Keep all vaccinations current, especially the kennel cough vaccine if they’ll be staying in a kennel.
4️⃣ Food Supply: Pack enough of your pet’s usual food to last the trip or their kennel stay—sudden dietary changes can cause tummy troubles!
5️⃣ Comfort Items: Bring familiar items like bedding, toys, and their food/water bowls to help them feel at home.
6️⃣ Kennel Checks: If using a kennel, book early, visit the facility, and provide detailed care instructions to the staff.
7️⃣ Travel Comfort: Use a well-ventilated crate or carrier and ensure it’s the right size for your pet.
8️⃣ Beach Safety: Keep your dog on a leash when visiting the beach for their safety and the safety of others.
9️⃣ Vet Details: Locate the nearest vet at your destination in case of an emergency.
🔟 Car Safety: Use a harness with a seat belt clip to keep your dog secure during long car rides.
1️⃣1️⃣ Medications: Pack anti-nausea and anti-anxiety medications—new environments can sometimes make pets uneasy.
1️⃣2️⃣ First Aid Kit: Don’t forget a pet first aid kit. It’s always better to be prepared!

Your pets deserve a safe and stress-free holiday, whether they’re with you or in trusted care. With these tips, you can relax knowing they’re well looked after.

Rabies Alert on the Kommetjie Coastline

Cape fur seals infected with rabies have been confirmed along the Western Cape, with the latest case at Long Beach, Kommetjie. This outbreak is rare and poses risks to humans, pets, and wildlife.

What to do if you encounter a seal:
🐕 Keep pets on a leash and away from seals.
👶 Ensure children stay a safe distance of at least 20 metres.
🌊 If a seal approaches you in the water, exit immediately.
📞 Report aggressive or erratic seal behaviour to local authorities (e.g., Wildman at 076 722 1930 or SPCA).

If bitten, wash the wound thoroughly with clean water and seek immediate medical attention for rabies treatment. Stay vigilant to protect yourself and others!

Grass Seeds: A Hidden Danger to Pets

Grass seeds may seem harmless, but they can pose serious risks to our beloved pets. Tia, a sweet dog, recently visited us at Country Animal Clinic with a painful wound. Upon examination, we discovered a grass seed had lodged itself under her skin, causing the nasty wound.

Grass seeds are barbed that make them perfect for burrowing into a pet’s skin, ears, eyes, nose, or even deeper into their body if left unchecked. This can lead to pain, swelling, infection, and in severe cases, more serious complications.

Thankfully, Tia’s owner recognised the signs early, and we were able to remove the grass seed and treat her wound. She went home feeling much more comfortable and on the mend.

How can you protect your pets from grass seeds?

Check your pet’s fur, paws, and ears after walks, especially if they've been in grassy areas.

Groom long-haired pets regularly to make it easier to spot seeds.

Keep your lawn trimmed to reduce the number of loose seeds.

Look out for signs of discomfort, like excessive licking, shaking of the head, or limping.

If you suspect your pet may have a grass seed problem, don’t delay—book a visit with your vet. Early detection can make all the difference!

Tia’s story serves as a reminder to stay vigilant during the dry season when grass seeds are most prevalent.
