Two important steps to prepare your pet for a move
- Familiarise them with their travel crate well in advance
- Make sure their vaccinations and preventive treatments for parasites are up to date

"Research shows that international travel can increase the spread of health threats for pets and it’s important that owners do their part to avoid this,” says Carel du Marchie Sarvaas.

A groundbreaking study from more than 200 countries forecasts the full toll of antimicrobial resistance on people, livestock and the economy and estimates a return of US$ 28 for every US$ 1 invested in drug innovation and health care improvements.

The analysis, published in three reports, was produced by experts at WOAH, Animal Industry Data (AID), the Center for Global Development (CGD), Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and RAND Europe, with contributions from The World Bank.

How can the world encourage more responsible use of antibiotics?

🐶🏥 Improved access to proper, registered veterinary services can guide the responsible administration and use of antibiotics to treat animal diseases.

💉 Farmers and veterinarians also need access to the full range of preventative animal health products that can stave off disease before antibiotics are even needed.

Equipping rural, remote, and developing areas with enough veterinary professionals will ultimately help to guide responsible antibiotic use on the farm.

Breaking boundaries - Together, against rabies.

Any mammal, including pets, wildlife, livestock and humans can become infected with rabies. Wildlife species that can also host rabies include jackals, foxes, mongooses and recently, seals.

Animal rabies occurs in all nine provinces, with dog rabies cycles mainly concentrated in the eastern parts of the country (Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape provinces and the eastern Free State border with Lesotho). Dogs and cats are often moved between provinces by travellers, workers, or holiday-goers, which can easily cause a spillover of rabies to any area if these animals are unvaccinated and incubating the disease.

If your dogs and cats are vaccinated against rabies, they form a protective barrier for your family and protect you. The same is true if everyone in your community ensures that their dogs and cats are vaccinated.
