How much do you back yourself?

The year was 1996. The place, Assagay, KwaZulu Natal.

I’m in my mid twenties, my twins almost 2 years old. Needing and wanting some extra work experience outside of being a full-time mom, I accepted a job as work rider to a local yard…

My first day was a baptism of fire! I was ordered onto horse after horse, jumping, schooling, hacking until everything blurred into one very long day without stirrups!

Apparently, I passed the imaginary test…. Day 2, and I was allowed to ride the Yard Star – Equifeeds Rival. Rival was a nondescript bay horse. A plain “little brown job”. Possibly reaching 15:3hh, but as round as he was tall.

He had been bought by the yard owner as a new junior horse for his star pupil, who had done very well in Pony Champs the previous year.
