PREPARING DOGS FOR A BABY
Babies bring big changes for everyone in the family, but the changes this brings for a dog are often underestimated or overlooked.

The arrival of this “strange creature” often means less attention, a lack of predictable routines, strange noises and smells, strange equipment and perhaps restricted access to certain areas or even lots of visitors.

Just as it takes time in planning, preparing and getting ready for a baby, time should also be taken in getting a dog ready for changes this will bring.

Change is not always easy. Any stress about how your dog will react will be easier to cope with by knowing you have prepared well in advance.

Think about the different scenarios a dog will need to get used to and gradually introduce these so that dogs don’t negatively associate changes and different routines with a baby’s arrival.

Preparing well beforehand and then closely managing interactions between your dog and baby is really important for safety, peace of mind, building positive associations and creating positive relationships.

Dogs generally adapt well to the arrival of a baby but it’s important to plan in advance to make this transition as stress free as possible for your dog.

Really a mind shift...and is working for us🐾🐾

Apparently I am doing a series on mindset shifts in dog training and animal learning. So this one is about leash skills. I saw a post today in which someone was talking about how they just could not get their young puppy to stop pulling. They had "tried everything" for "the past two months" and they were understandably very frustrated. I posted a comment about leash skills, and how I don't teach a dog "not to pull" I teach them to maintain a position and work with me. This is part of that idea that we need to always be working towards something, instead of working on just stopping something we don't appreciate. I start leash skills with dogs with out a leash whenever possible (and if not possible I use a long line.) The leash is not going to teach my dog anything, the leash is there only as a safety precaution. Reinforcement will teach my dogs where walking with me will reach maximum benefit. It's like a seat belt. We don't use a seat belt to prevent car accidents, we use the seat belt that in the event of an accident we are hopefully safe and face minimized risk.

Teaching a dog leash skills is a vital part of their enrichment. I believe strongly that leash skills might be one of the most important concrete "life skills" a dog can learn. Dogs who are easy to walk on a leash end up with very big worlds. They go a lot of places. But it starts with teaching them a position, not teaching them to be on a leash.

Also, folks, leash skills are deceptively difficult for dogs. It can take them quite a while to really learn how to walk on a leash, how to master that skill. So be paitient and commit to the learning! And with puppies there is a lot of ups and downs in their learning journey, but they are babies and for the most part they are trying their best. Be patient with your dog and with yourself! And if you find yourself frustrated and annoyed; cut your losses and go home. Try again later. It will click into place eventually!

Why dogs pull on leash

This is a really common problem and one that often causes us huge frustration.

It can make walks really unpleasant or we may even stop all together because our dogs pull so much.

Understanding why dogs pull is important. They don’t pull because they are trying to be the Alpha, be the top dog, trying to dominate us or take over the world.

Getting out for a walk is a really exciting, stimulating time for our dogs, especially if they’ve been cooped up in the same place for hours or days at a time without anything to do.

Pulling is normal, natural behaviour. Having to walk slowly, calmly, stuck to our side when the only thing our dogs can think about is pulling forward and exploring the environment requires a huge amount of impulse control that may be just too much for many dogs to master.

Yanking the leash, using choke collars, prong collars, slip leads or similar types of tools in an attempt to control this natural impulse is not the answer.

They may provide us with a feeling of being in control but leave our dogs feeling even more frustrated or they pull even harder in an attempt to make us move forward.

Do we really need to have our dogs walk calmly stuck to our side? Is this being fair to them?

Learning and practicing loose lead walking, using a long line when it’s safe to do so, taking your dog for a decompression walk where they can choose which direction to go and when to stop and sniff, booking a sniff spot or a walking area, driving to a safe, open area where they can explore, rewarding them for checking in with you are all ways to meet their natural needs and might even result in a dog that stops pulling.
