Gimli Barrett
Little 5-month-old Gimli is the perfect example of how our teams of Generalist Vets, Specialist Veterinary Physicians and Specialist Surgeons collaborate as one to offer the best medical care to our patients.
Gimli was referred to us by his regular Veterinarian as he was lethargic and weak with a reduced appetite and suspected anaemia from internal blood loss. After an initial consultation and workup, our Generalist Vet, Dr. Kgau Mokoatlo referred him to Dr. Brogan Atkinson from our Specialist Medicine department, who immediately organized a blood transfusion and an ultrasound scan, and diagnosed a suspected ruptured ulcer.
Gimli was referred to our Specialist Surgery department, where they found an extremely large ruptured pyloric ulcer and septic peritonitis. The duodenum and pylorus area was separated and only being held in place by a small section of muscle – little Gimli’s intestines tore as the surgeon held them up! Our Specialist Surgeon Dr. Nel was able to resect the ulcer and debride the damaged tissue. He also performed abdominal lavage in order to disinfect the abdominal cavity.
The surgery went well but Gimli still had a guarded prognosis as there was a high risk of adhesion and infection. Gimli went back to our Medicine Department for his post-operative management and care. A drain was placed to drain excess fluid from his abdomen, and held in place with a little net “vest”.
After a long recovery, and the expert care of his Medicine nursing team, Sr. Carla, Sr. Marissa, Sr. Sinead and Sr. PK, Gimli has been discharged. His follow up scan reveals that everything is healing well, and we are happy to report that he is well on the road to recovery.
The sight of Mouse staggering down the passage on his wobbly legs was the cause of much celebration and many tears from his nurses who lived every second of his fight for life.
