No shortage of eggs here! I last counted well over 300 eggs. The ladies can moult and chill all winter if they want, and we will still eat. Our oldest preserved eggs are from July 2024 and we will probably dig into them from about April. We have used eggs around 1.5 years old and they were still good.

Having said that, adding Speckled Sussex and Easter Eggers to the flock may ensure at least a couple of fresh eggs over winter. We have really pushed the breeding of our Sussex in particular so we should have a well established flock quite soon.

Roxy came to visit for the weekend. As much as we love horses and riding, not that we get the time to do so, we have never pushed our son to be like us. Instead we have simply offered opportunities for him where he can be with horses. He very much enjoys brushing Roxy and walking her around our property to show her things. Sometime he will ask to ride but this is less frequent than his love for doing other things with her.

Our first two Brahmpington hens for the season are for sale at R300 each, WhatsApp 0733895245 to book these hens or to join our WhatsApp group where we will post our stock as they come available. Courier available to most parts of South Africa or we can deliver between Grahamstown via Port Elizabeth to Tsitsikamma and between Grahamstown and Bathurst and Grahamstown and Fort Beaufort.

Why you want a Brahmpington:

1) They are gentle and friendly
2) They are broody but also lay a very good amount of decent sized eggs
3) They are extremely diligent mothers
4) Our hens seem to consistently reach an 80-90% hatch rate
5) We do not incubate our chickens and they are raised free-range on non-GMO feed, only caged at night to keep them safe
6) Our roosters are consistently protective but never a danger to humans
7) Our chickens are vigilant and keep their babies safe from birds of prey, a characteristic that we have noticed is imparted on them from as young as a week old

Goats for sale:

Name: Uno
DOB: 7.08.2024
Breed: British Alpine/Nigerian Dwarf (Father) x Toggenburg (Mother)
S*x: Male
Location: Near Grahamstown, Eastern Cape
Price: R1500

Uno has a lovely, calm nature. He was weaned naturally and later than most goats. He is getting used to being handled without being boisterous or over-friendly. Uno is healthy and strong and has been raised naturally with no intervention. He will be an asset to anyone wishing to breed with dairy goats while increasing hardiness. Uno's mother Lola was chosen for her exceptional hardiness and ability to thrive at her previous home which was in a high-tick area. Despite very minimal intervention she remained healthy. Uno's father Spot was selected for his milk producing genes with the inclusion of some Dwarf blood to improve disease-resistance in his progeny.

Name: Boots and Sandals
DOB: 20.09.2024
Breed: Nigerian Dwarf x Nigerian Dwarf/British Alpine
S*x: Male
Location: Near Grahamstown, Eastern Cape
Price: R1000 each or R1500 for both

Boots and Sandals are twins and would be best suited as pets or for breeding back to British Alpine females. They can be sold together and can be castrated before being sold. They are not yet weaned but will be ready for weaning shortly. While they aren't fully tame yet they have an avid interest in people and will easily become friendly.

Delivery can be arranged for Boots and Sandals to Port Elizabeth.

This is what a 90% hatch rate looks like and what most of our season is looking like now. There is a pesky hawk trying to balance things out but the chickens seem to be sensing it much quicker and running for cover before it can get anything. I try not to get attached to anyone at the moment regardless.

In this batch are mostly Speckled Sussex with a couple of Easter Eggers and a Brahmpington, all hatched out by their mom.

Some very new Brahmpington youngstock 😁😁 This year we are playing around with getting more lighter colours and we brought in totally new genetics. I suspect we are going to get more size along with colour the way things are going. Our hens are still hitting the mark with what we need: fabulous moms, broody, very high hatch rates and they have been pumping out eggs like nobody's business.

Spot and his son Uno went into their new camp today. It's pretty dry here so not terribly exciting. Spot got straight to work doing some renovations. I actually really liked that hedge!

Some goat spam! The babies are getting big and slowly being weaned. We've done it largely on their terms, ie - the moment they decide they want to do the dirty dance they get weaned 😂 this has been at roughly five months and has gone surprisingly smoothly.

We have gotten enough milk for our needs while allowing the babies to nurse full time, and once they're weaned we can enjoy getting some extra.

We only have males for sale this year, we have one who is largely Dwarf with a lick of Alpine in him but he is tiny and adorable, and then larger Uno who is mostly Toggenburg with a lick of Alpine and Dwarf, who wants to go and live with his Aunty Jess. We'll see if that happens come breeding season.

We chose to add a bit of Dwarf into the mix due to them being naturally disease resistant and having an extremely high butterfat content meaning richer milk. So far so good, everyone is super healthy and hardy.

We've been quiet, just because we are in the thick of breeding season. We've brought in a new Brahmpington line which should increase our blue and splash numbers and availability as these were under high demand last season.

We have also diversified! We have a BIG coloured egg producer flock doing it's thing. In the mix are blue, green and white egg producers from Easter Egger, Auracana and Faverolles. We also have some eggs from totally different lines under a trusty broody hen.

Some of the chickens featured below have been sold but we still have a beautiful quality Wyandotte Rooster and a splash Orpington rooster for sale. We will have Eggers available for sale next year as well as Brahmpingtons.

6 month old pair of Wyandottes for sale (pictures taken at 4.5 months old). Blue silver-laced hen and a splash laced rooster. The hen has been rung since this picture. Both are very healthy and have free-ranged since hatching and will be an asset to anyone wishing to produce both colours. R1000 for the pair

WhatsApp 0733895245 for more pictures/videos. We are situated near Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape but can deliver to Port Elizabeth up until Tsitsikamma as well as Bathurst and surrounds or to select areas via courier.

We have been blessed with two baby goats being born in the last week. Uno the wildly coloured boy was born first, followed by Yuna, a little girl. Yuna was to be named Una but I preferred the name Yuna as it has more meaning - "gentleness."

Their moms Lola and Lily are vary hardy Toggenburgs which were carefully selected as they had survived living in a very high tick region with very minimal intervention. We put them to our ram Spot who is 3/4 Nigerian Dwarf and 1/4 British Alpine.

Uno is for sale and will be available upon weaning.

On the chicken front - we have LOTS of eggs and we are just enjoying that for now. While we are still intensively breeding our much-loved Brahmpingtons with a couple of eggs under our hens, focusing on a larger variety of colours and new genetics, we have also branched out into coloured egg producers and also have a couple of Speckled Sussex and Wyandottes.

We are very proud of the Brahmpingtons we have bred over the last few years. These chickens have worked out to be hardy, docile, broody and also great for both eggs and meat. We get the best of both worlds from them.

We allow all of our hens to hatch out and raise their babies naturally and everybody free ranges from day one. They also get plenty of organic greens and non-GMO feed. This is our secret to healthy, strong and happy dual-purpose chickens that are both beautiful to have around and also safe enough for kids to handle.

Six of our chickens have left our little breeding project in Johannesburg today. Three Brahmpington hens and a rooster will be going home to the Eastern Cape to join our flock there via a stop in Pretoria for easy courier collection.

Two of our hens, now named April and May, have gone to the most perfect home in Pretoria East where they are already much loved and adored by their new family.

We will be moving the rest of our stock back to the Eastern Cape over the next few months due to a high demand for this particular colour and quality of chicken.

We have a number of Brahmpington hens and roosters ready to go this month so get in touch with us if you are interested. Christine - 0733895245
