We have a lot going on at the moment with various injuries ….

Penny and team are still treating Sheila’s baby and also keeping an eye on Duister’s wound when he went into the back of a truck.

We have Hope in our care … who has been ridden too hard by her owner and very sore - he is avoiding us at the moment but we will find him.

Same goes for beautiful big boy, Black Jack … you guys should be ashamed of what you have done to him (see video in comment).

Ollie aka Red has caught his leg on something too … his friend, Blessing, is here for company!

Community equine assistance …. Not sure what happened to poor young mare, Hope but she has wounds and is very sore today, back and hind legs.

Hope is in a safe place now and Penny will come out to see her soon.

I saw and spoke tothe 2 young boys who took her on Sunday and wait for the owner to respond … I will happily name and shame once I find out the full story.

Enough is enough 🙏🏻❤️‍🩹🐴🤬

Even little Lucy was invited to join in the fun!

Update on Sheila’s foal from Penny and another successful gelding:

“After receiving a video of Sheila's foal again being unsound on her right back leg, mother and baby were taken home where Dr Sarah of Caledon Vet Clinic / Dierekliniek was on hand to investigate.

A pe*******on injury was discovered and pus poured out from a very deep abcess. Dr suspects that the original injury closed up and that is why it wasn't detected earlier. We are hoping there is no foreign body lurking.

Fire, Sheila's 3 year old was gelded at the same time. He is the spitting image of Sheila but is much easier to handle. Yesterday, my job was waving a stick around to keep Sheila at bay, so Sarah could treat baby without being chased off.

Today a lot of coercing with lucerne got Sheila lassooed and restrained to a tree so we could attend to her baby.”

Penny and her team have been treating this poor horse who was suffering from acute laminitis, after breaking into the pig food store and helping himself to way too much food!

After 2 days of anti-inflammatories, he is doing much better - see video in comments!

Duivel / Duister update as per Penny - this was the horse who went into the back of a truck:

“Everyone will think the wound looks terrible, but it is just the dead skin peeling off from the impact.
We remove the loose bits daily. The open section is still going to take a while to close but there has been no infection basically because local boy, Wesley, followed wound care rules and immediately hosed/cleaned the area.”

So uplifting to see the EARS and Greyton Animal Welfare Society teams working together at the first GAWS weekly clinic of 2025!

Wonderful to see everyone learning from each other, to care for & treat all animals and apparently team spirits were high!

Thank you GAWS for sharing your clinic with us and this is the way forwards together in 2025!

Poor Duister (aka Duivel) was in an accident on Thursday and is now in our care in Greyton!

A local boy was riding him (and not walking) behind a truck in Park Street, when he lost control of his horse, who then went into the back of the truck. The boy was thrown off, breaking his arm / collar bone and taken to hospital.

Very suprised this hadn’t happened before … please go slow with your horses on the road or serious accidents like this can, and will happen 🙏🏻❤️‍🩹🐴

Message from Penny, our Sanctuary manager:

“We are so lucky to be able to provide green grass to our large and small residents.

It's dry and brown out there and we are seeing a lot more of the community horses grazing on the road sides trying to find a better food source.

Reducing the numbers of roaming animals must be a priority to prevent grazing shortages, weight loss and of course road accidents.

We cannot emphasise enough the importance of gelding stallions and annual chemical sterilizer for mares.”
