Meet LIV Village's vet! Gabor, Crescent Vet thank you so much for partnering with us!
We are so grateful to be able to call on you when our horses need you!

Your love and care towards our animals helps us provide happy healthy horses for the children here at LIV Durban

We were called to assist a wild, unhandled horse who couldn't be approached. A big thank you goes out to Crescent Vet and .lukacs.5249 for meeting us to dart the horse and examine him. He was still very fearful even after sedation and after a closer look at his injuries, the vets made the decision to humanely euthanase.

RIP to this little horse. We tried to help him but his prognosis was too poor and the kindest thing to do was to make sure he was no longer suffering. Unfortunately not all calls end with a happy resolution but we will continue to try our best for the horses of KZN.

10 TIPS FOR PREVENTING COLIC!

Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe, but it should never be ignored. Many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic – and seeking qualified veterinary help – can the chance for recovery be maximized.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic; while equines seem predisposed to colic due to the anatomy and function of their digestive tracts, management still plays a key role in prevention. And although not every case is avoidable, the guidelines listed in the graphic can maximize your horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic.

For more information about colic prevention and treatment, consult your equine veterinarian. Additional colic information is available on our website at aaep.org

An interesting dental case from this week.

This horse was surprisingly still eating fairly comfortably in spite of these findings in his mouth.

We recommend dental checkups done at least once a year to monitor changes like these.

A number of rhinos were dehorned in Spioenkop Nature Reserve recently. The Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Game Capture team along with Orton Bosman (Heligistix Helicopters ), Dr Rowan Leeming (African Wildlife Vets) and Dr Gabor Lukacs (The Crescent Vet) took three days to dehorn the entire white rhino population within the protected area.

Wildlife ACT - Focused Conservation generously sponsored the helicopter time and uBhejane Xtreme (Ubhejane Xtreme MTB Challenge ) donated the funds for the pharmaceuticals used during the operation. It was a wonderful team effort!
