Ever heard of a balancer and wondered what it really does for your horse’s diet?
Balancers are highly concentrated feeds designed to provide essential vitamins, minerals, and protein without adding extra calories. The term concentrated means that it provides a lot of nutrients in a small amount, which is why you don’t need much balancer to pack a punch!
🔹 Compliments forage: If your horse is maintaining a healthy weight on forage alone, a balancer helps supply essential daily nutrients. No matter how good your hay or grazing is there will still be some nutrients that will need providing.
🔹 Perfect for Good doers: Balancers are ideal for delivering everything your horse needs without the need for normal concentrates. The small amount fed means you won't supply unnecessary calories, sugars, or starch.
🔹 Ideal for those not needing the average amount of feed: Horse feed manufacturers formulate their nutrient inclusions and feeding recommendations based on the average horse. Some horses may not need as much as suggested, if this is the case then they may not receive the full vitamin and mineral pack the manufacturer planned. A balancer can be a great way to fill this shortfall.
🔹 Useful in stud situations: Balancers can be used to increase the level of protein, vitamins, and minerals needed at certain life stages without calories. For example, lactating mares have an increased need for protein but not all mares need large amounts of extra calories.
