Dog faeces on the beach isn’t just unpleasant — it can spread harmful bacteria and parasites. Always pack extra p**p bags before heading out and dispose of them in a proper bin. Let’s keep our beaches clean for everyone to enjoy — paws and feet alike!

Beach days are the best kind of days 🌊☀️

But not every dog (or person!) enjoys surprise greetings. Keeping your dog on a lead until you’re sure the area is calm and safe protects your pet, other dogs, and local wildlife. 🐾

Before heading out, double-check that the beach you’re visiting is pet-friendly — some have time slots or leash-only areas. Knowing the rules means everyone can relax and enjoy the sunshine.

If another dog comes your way, it’s always safest to pop your dog back on the lead. Chat to the other owner first to be sure both dogs are social and happy to say hello. Even on “dog-friendly” beaches, good manners go a long way — and not every beachgoer wants to make furry friends! 🐕‍🦺

👉 Once you’re in a safe spot, let them enjoy their freedom responsibly — tails wagging, paws splashing, and hearts full.

Holiday Checklist: Chronic meds — don’t get caught out. ⚖️🐾

As vets, we genuinely want to help — but we also have to follow the law.
In South Africa, veterinary practices are not licensed pharmacies, which means:
🔹 We cannot fill a prescription written by another vet.
🔹 We may only dispense medication to animals directly under our care.

So if you run out of chronic medication while on holiday, the local vet will need to:
1️⃣ Request a full history from your regular vet, and
2️⃣ Examine your pet in person before prescribing or dispensing anything.
This isn’t because anyone is trying to be difficult — it’s the law, and it exists to protect your pet’s health and safety. ❤️

Before you travel:
Make sure you have enough medication for your entire trip, plus a few extra days’ worth in case plans change.

Safe travels, and keep those tails wagging! 🌞🐶

🐍 Lunchtime Puff Adder Rescue – Teamwork at Its Best! 🐍

At lunchtime today, Emma-Lisa received a call to catch and relocate a puff adder at the Kabeljous Lagoon bathrooms. As she’s very close to her due date, she wisely phoned a friend 😉 (yes, she’s banned from handling venomous snakes until baby arrives!).

Enter the Megannons, who came to the rescue and safely caught a rather large “puffy”. The Kouga Municipality was a huge help, sending out a TLB to lift the cement slab to ensure there were no other snakes hiding out of sight.

Thanks to fantastic teamwork and quick action, no people and no snakes were injured, and the puff adder was safely released far away from human activity.

A big thank you to everyone involved for keeping both our community and our wildlife safe 👏💚

We’re not ignoring you — we’re saving a life. ❤️🐾

During the festive season, veterinary teams often have to juggle ringing phones, walk-ins, emergencies, and critical patients all at once. If your call goes unanswered for a moment, it’s never because we don’t care — it’s because we’re helping a pet who needs us urgently in that moment.

We truly appreciate your patience, understanding, and kindness.

Your support helps us give every animal — including yours — the care they deserve.

Thank you for being kind this silly season. 💛

Avoid Holiday Delays — order your pet’s medication at least 48 hours in advance. 🕒🐾

The festive season is one of the busiest times of the year for veterinary practices and suppliers. Many wholesalers close early or operate with limited stock over December, which means last-minute orders are far harder to secure.

To avoid holiday stress, please request your pet’s chronic or repeat medication at least 48 hours before you need it — ideally sooner if you’re travelling.

A quick reminder about the law:
Veterinary practices are not licensed pharmacies, and by law we may only dispense medication to animals under our direct care. This means that if you run out while on holiday, the local vet will need to examine your pet before prescribing or dispensing anything - even if you have an old script.

Planning ahead keeps your pet safe and helps prevent delays, shortages, or emergency consults while you’re trying to relax.

Safe holidays, and keep those meds topped up! 🌞🐶💊

Fireworks aren’t just “loud” — pets hear them far more intensely than we do.

Dogs and cats have much more sensitive hearing and can detect sounds at higher pitches and lower volumes, making sudden bangs and vibrations feel overwhelming and frightening.

Add flashing lights, strong smells, and holiday routine changes, and their stress levels rise — increasing the risk of escape.

Help keep them safe:
✔ Create a quiet, secure space
✔ Use music or TV for background noise
✔ Ask your vet about calming options
✔ Make sure they’re microchipped
✔ Keep your details up to date

The fireworks may be out of your hands, but your pet’s safety isn’t.

📣 Keep Your Pet Safe This Holiday Season: Microchipping Matters. With visitors, open doors, and fireworks around the corner, pets are more likely to slip out or run off. Microchipping is one of the simplest ways to make sure your pet can be identified and returned home safely.

🔍 What Is a Microchip? A microchip is a tiny permanent ID placed just under your pet’s skin by a vet or veterinary nurse.
The procedure takes seconds, requires no anaesthesia, and is no more uncomfortable than a routine injection.

Each chip carries a unique number linked to your contact details. If your pet is found, vets and animal welfare organisations can scan the chip, search the database, and contact you immediately.

⚠️ What Microchips Don’t Do: A microchip isn’t a GPS or tracking device — it can’t show your pet’s location. It simply provides reliable, lifelong identification that can’t fall off like a collar or tag.

📞 Keep Your Details Updated: If you change your phone number, email, or address, remember to update the microchip database so you can be reached quickly. If your pet isn’t microchipped yet, contact your vet to book an appointment.

🍦 The only soft serve allowed on the beach? The ice-cream kind! 😉

Dog waste left behind isn’t just unsightly — it can contaminate sand and water and spread parasites. A quick clean-up shows respect for others and helps protect local ecosystems.

Keep a small roll of bags clipped to your lead or beach bag so you’re always ready to clean up after your pet.

The festive season brings busier parks, neighbourhoods and public spaces, and as your veterinary team, we want to help keep both pets and people safe during this high-activity time.

A few gentle reminders for safer holiday walks:
• Keep dogs on a secure lead. Even well-socialised pets can become overwhelmed or reactive in busy or unfamiliar environments.
• Please don’t assume another dog is friendly. Always check with the owner before allowing a greeting.
• Avoid letting your dog run ahead or roam off-lead. Sudden encounters can lead to fear, scuffles or injuries.
• Don’t underestimate small dogs. They’re often bold, confident and quick to challenge larger breeds — size doesn’t predict behaviour.
• Watch your dog’s body language for stress signals such as stiff posture, avoidance, growling or raised hackles.
• Check equipment before heading out. Ensure collars and harnesses fit securely — loose straps can allow dogs to slip free when startled.

If an incident does occur: Your safety comes first. Avoid putting yourself at risk, and contact us for guidance afterwards — even minor wounds can hide deeper injuries or become infected.

This post provides general awareness only and is not a substitute for veterinary or behavioural advice. If your dog struggles with greetings, reactivity or fear around other dogs, reach out to our team - we’re here to help.
