Healthy Hound is the original, most successful and most experienced missing pet unit in Africa. We have a team of dogs that are experienced in tracking dogs, cats, wildlife and more! Although based in Gauteng we have traveled to other provinces and have even had a callout to the Karoo as well as a callout to search for a dog on Table Mountain! e to help and guide you from the minute your pet has been found and we will not abandon you until your pet is found. We have been involved with the searching and rescue of some high profile dog and cat searches and have been in local and National news many times. But, it’s not all about the news making searches! Our little team started in August 2020 when K9 Zizou had a career change at 1yr old from anti poaching to missing pet search. From the beginning, she has excelled as a search dog, even in difficult circumstances. Subsequently we have trained up a bunch of other dogs and strive for continuous training for handlers and dogs alike. We do not rely on just one dog and will pick the right dog for the job. And we use other search methods too if they are needed. We like to take a holistic approach to searching. We also do not just search! We also perform rescues (including technical rescue) and do regular work in communities such as our snare walks and other initiatives. We have done some dramatic rescues and some amazing investigations which have resulted in great success. With a success rate that is comfortably over 85% and the fact that we also do rescues, it is the logical choice to contact us when a pet goes missing.

Welcome Home Reggie (aka Kitty)! 🐾

Yes… you’re seeing right – Reggie went missing again! We were called out once more and Axl quickly tracked him back to the same spot as last time. This time, though, there was also plenty of scent closer to home – seems like this adventurous boy loves his hunting trips.

Unlike before, Axl’s presence alone wasn’t enough to convince him home, so we set up a lure… and it worked perfectly! 🎉 Except instead of getting stuck in a tree (yes, last time James had to climb up to fetch him 🙈), Reggie strutted home with not one but two cat friends in tow!

We think his wild adventure days may finally be over – and we’re so glad he’s back safe. ❤️🐾

✨ Welcome Home Cujo! ✨

This super sweet boy has his routines down to an art — but strangers are not part of them. When people arrived to do repairs, Cujo wasn’t impressed and disappeared.

We were called out late Tuesday night, and Blue quickly tracked his trail to a house a block away. Being so late, we switched to luring instead. Luckily, Cujo’s mom has worked with us before and knew exactly what to do. She set up right away, and it worked beautifully!

As we were just arriving home in the early hours of yesterday morning, Cujo arrived at his home — loudly demanding attention from his mom. 💕

We love what she wrote to us afterwards:
“Thank you guys for spending the night helping to look for my boy. He will be on house arrest until further notice.” 🐾

✨ Welcome Home Lexi! ✨

Our first search with Cairo led us to a complex bordering a koppie. Despite a lure being run, Lexi wasn’t ready to make her way back. On our return visit, tracking showed she’d edged closer to home—but something was holding her back.

The culprit? A local feral cat with a bit of a bully streak. Luckily, Lexi’s mom Anja is an experienced feral feeder and knew just how to handle the situation. She safely trapped the feral (who will be sterilised and cared for), giving Lexi the calm weekend she needed to feel safe enough to return.

And it worked—Lexi is now happily home where she belongs! 🐾💛
Big shoutout to Anja for the love she shows not only to Lexi, but also to the ferals in her care.

Fires devastate more than land — they destroy homes, wildlife, and lives. This evening we joined others in the area to fight one at . Grateful it didn’t reach homes nearby, but heartbroken for the habitat lost and any small wildlife who may have lost their lives in this horrible fire. 💔🔥

😻 The spiced ginger Spice is home!! 🐈

Last night Cairo went out in a follow-up search and tracked this little guy like the pro he is and pretty quickly picked up scent in the next complex and tracked right to where Spice was hiding - under a car 🚗 . Cairo was pulled back and Spice was brought out from under the car. He did throw a bit of a tantrum in his mom’s arms (she is scratched but ok) but this guy is safe and sound with his sister Sugar and his mom and granny.

If you saw our Instagram post from last night, you will have seen that Cairo was rewarded with a yummy steak 🥩 at (pet friendly and yummy food).

Spice’s mom sent us this message this morning: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for finding my precious Spice. I am eternally grateful for your dedication and service. He would not be home now without your help. He also says thanks 😊”

Added cool thing with this search is I bumped into someone who recognised me from when she was also at ! Small world.

✨ Kitty is home! ✨

Kitty had been missing for a week when Axl tracked him to the reeds just outside the Delta Park bird sanctuary. We shared some next steps and how to set up a lure for his mom… but Kitty had other plans! Within just 2 hours of the search, he made his way home all on his own. 🐾

It’s something we see sometimes – the search dogs give cats that little “nudge” they need to head back, and this time it worked beautifully.

A short, sweet, and very happy ending for Kitty and his family. ❤️

😿 Rest in peace sweet kitty 😿

Yesterday we were called to assist in the search for Strepie, a cat who had been attacked by a dog that was off leash. The incident was captured on CCTV and despite the best efforts from the community to find her, she could not be located.

Axl was brought in and quickly located where she had gone to ground. Sadly, Strepie had already passed away from her injuries. Diane and James gently recovered her and returned her to her family, giving them the chance to say goodbye.

Our hearts are with Strepie’s family and everyone who loved her. We would also loke to thank the community for their efforts in trying to help find her. Rest peacefully, sweet girl. 🐾❤️

Her mom has sent us a few messages this morning thanking us for our professionalism in handling this as well as a few things about Strepie that she would like us to share with you:

Strepie would have celebrated her 9th birthday on the 22nd.

“A few facts about Strepie:
She thoroughly enjoyed her food and would purr loudly while eating - every meal! She loved tuna and chicken, but no affinity for biltong.
It was her responsibility to "pre-wash" any bowl that had cream in it.”

As mentioned in our previous post: When people contact us about their cats go missing, our first step is to run through a checklist and guide them to try get their cats home without a search first. We help at least 2 cat owners a week to get their cats home with this, often more. Welcome Home Gandalf!!

🐈‍⬛ The Beard Man, the sanitarium and a cool cat…. 😻

Harley is the boss cat of a man with the coolest beard! Harley got spooked near his humans office in a complex that is situated on a heritage site by a feisty Jack Russel.

Blue and Axl were called in to locate him and made fast work of locating his hideout. However this kitty was not trusting any dog amd would not come out of hiding - even with a tasty tuna lure! A few days passed and Bandit came out and found that Harley had moved into the abandoned construction site next door. A few more visits and lots of persuasion and we managed to get Harley to come out of the construction site and safely past the evil Jack Russell using a slightly longer route but safer for him.

Harley is safely home and back with his parents. He has decided that instead of being an adventure cat, he is taking over marketing at and rumor has it, he is in talks with our girl Peanut about bringing out a pet sunscreen!

😻 Welcome home, Scout! 🐾

After a whole week of adventures, this curious kitty finally made his way back to his family. James and Axl tracked his trail to an overpass near the bridge and railway, but they could not get access thanks to fences and big locks. So, with our tried-and-true luring technique in play, Scout didn’t need much convincing! Before long, a neighbor spotted him and he was safely scooped up and taken home. Now he’s back where he belongs — safe, sound, and surrounded by love. ❤️🏡
