Glenda’s Dog Rescue

Glenda’s Dog Rescue Established in 2022, Glenda’s Dog Rescue is a non-profit organization located in Orange Farm (PBO no 930079007).

Our primary goal is to alleviate the suffering of animals that are lost, abandoned, neglected, abused, or ignored in the townships. We also aim to educate pet owners on proper animal care and ways to enhance their pets' living conditions. We facilitate the adoption of abandoned or unwanted animals and perform sterilization procedures on approximately 12 to 16 animals each month in collaboration wi

th Lets Spay # SA. Every dog leaving our shelter, whether sterilized or recovering from illness or injury, is vaccinated, dewormed, defleaed, and sent home with a sturdy wooden kennel, food bowl, and water bucket. Moreover, we distribute kennels to other dogs in the townships in need of shelter, having already delivered over 1800. On a monthly basis, we distribute 1200kgs of food to feed 50 dogs in the township, whose owners require assistance for various reasons, as well as the dogs in our shelter. Our shelter in the township has an on site, mobile and highly experienced individual who responds to calls for help from all township residents.

Zandie’s owner was never at home and Zandie suffered often from many days without food or water because his owner was always away and never organised anybody to care for Zandie, eventually, driven by hunger, Zandie made a hole in the fence and was able to go out in search of food on the rubbish dumps in the harsh conditions of the township, sometimes he would steal from the “township people” who were very violent towards him, throwing stones, boiling water and even hot oil. Life is hard for a township dog that is neglected, every night he would go home to an empty house and be alone, often hungry and thirsty if he had been unlucky and had found little food and water that day but Zandie is a resilient and loving dog that over came many of these challenges.

We gave Zandie’s owner countless warnings concerning Zandie’s neglect which he ignored but eventually he got tired of being asked to take better care of Zandie and surrendered him, thankfully Zandie came to live at our shelter and a promise of a new life.

Zandie is a 3/4 year old boy who always has a smile on his face, he has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped,
he has a slight limp from an old injury sustained from searching for food but it doesn’t slow him down.

Zandie is a strong and brave dog that deserves a second chance in life if you have room in your heart and home for him please contact me he is waiting patiently for someone to want him and to have a place he can live and call "home."

Meet handsome Finley.

Finley is without doubt a most loving and loyal dog, he just enjoys every minute of every day and can’t get enough of any affection that he may receive from the workers at our shelter, Finley has a simply wonderful character and appreciates everything that he receives with so much enthusiasm that it is a joy to be around him. Finley is 3/4 years old and has been sterilised and microchipped and is good with humans of all ages and other dogs of all sizes and sexes, Finley is the perfect family dog.

Finley wasn’t always the happy dog that he is today, he was one of the many dogs that are left behind when their owners relocate, left alone without food, water or shelter, tied to a chain behind a shack, unable to survive or fend for himself, wondering why this had happened to him, hungry, thirsty and confused, asking himself if they had forgotten him and unable to understand what he had done to have been left behind.

Finley has been at our shelter for a long time recovering from a broken heart, his soul was shattered and he needed time to forget the trauma of being rejected and unwanted, he has recovered now and needs to find some body to love him and give him a place he can call “home” if you can help Finley please contact me.

Libbie’s story is one of resilience and hope, her neglect was so severe that her owner’s sister reported the situation to us and we stepped in and rescued Libbie and brought her to the shelter, while we’re unsure about the current relationship between the siblings, we laid a formal charge against the brother to ensure Libbie’s suffering would never be repeated.

When Libbie arrived at the shelter she was in a terrible condition, the worst case of worm, flea and tick infestation that we had ever seen but with time, love and dedicated care, she has been transformed into a beautiful, healthy and strong 4/5 years old girl.

Libbie has been sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped, she gets along well with other dogs young and old of both genders and humans of all ages and the 4 cats at our shelter like her.

Libbie needs a loving family to show her that not all humans are cruel, while she has learnt to trust our shelter staff, she has not yet found her own special person, someone to provide the care, love and attention she truly deserves, if you can be the one to give Libbie the forever home she’s been waiting for, please contact me.

Pardon’s story is one of heartbreak but shows incredible strength.

Pardon was abandoned by his previous owner as a puppy and left to fend for himself on the rubbish dumps in the township.

When we found Pardon he was very young and was in a terrible condition, suffering from mange and covered in ticks and fleas yet even then his spirit shone through his “will” to live was clear and we knew that we had to help him.

Today Pardon is a healthy 18 months old medium breed dog thriving in our care, he has been sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped and is good with all his canine friends at our shelter and the 4 cats we have there, he loves people of all ages and is sweet and gentle and is longing for a family to call his own.

Pardon has one black eye and one white eye which makes him look different but unique, people often overlook him because of this but those who take the time to know him well discover a sweet, loyal and gentle soul who only wants to be loved.

Pardon has so much to offer to a family who can see beyond his appearance, if you can help Pardon please contact me.

Roxy is an old lady, she didn’t bark so she wasn’t wanted any more, tied up with no escape, she spent her days on a chain often without food and water, with no shelter and ignored by her owners, simply there to bark and alert her owners to any criminal event that might occur.

Roxy is not old only 8/9 but too old for the township, she has been vaccinated, sterilized and microchipped and has earned her place in the sun, she is good with other dogs and people of all ages, if you can give Roxy a place to relax and enjoy her golden years she will amaze you with her love and loyalty, she fits in everywhere and loves everything and will make the most incredible companion or “family dog” if you can give Roxy a space in your heart and home please contact me.

Troy is a handsome 3-4-year-old boy who started his life in the township, although he was loved dearly by his owner there were no fences or walls around his property which led to a tragic accident when Troy was sadly run over by a car that broke his right front leg, we were called to help and rushed him to our vet. After an operation and many months of rest in his cage as well as the dedicated care from Dr. Lewis and his team at Walkaville Veterinary Clinic, Troy made a remarkable recovery and today is a healthy young dog with no limp at all.

Troy has been sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped, he loves the company of other dogs and people of all ages, he is a playful and friendly dog that has a loving nature and would bring joy to any household.

Troy is eager to please and tries his hardest to do whatever is asked of him, he is truly a special boy who is extremely affectionate and yearns for a family to call his own or a single person that he can love, please contact me if you can make Troy's dreams come true.

Shane is a beautiful 3-4-year-old boy with a heart full of hope despite a tough start to his young life.

Left behind a shack in the township when his owners relocated, Shane wandered the streets searching for food on rubbish dumps and begging at houses, concerned neighbors reached out to us and we were able to rescue him, we found Shane hiding, terrified and shaking, underneath an old bath behind the shack that once was his home.

Shane is a sweet, loving boy who deserves a second chance at happiness having never known what it feels like to be loved or to have a home of his own, Shane has only experienced loneliness and neglect until he came to our shelter, while we do our best to provide for him a shelter is not a "home" and Shane longs for a family and "home" to call his own.

Shane has been sterilized, vaccinated, and microchipped, he gets along wonderfully with dogs of all shapes and sizes, is fantastic with humans of all ages and is even friendly with the 4 cats at our shelter who are perfectly comfortable around him.

All Shane needs is someone to give him the love and security he never had, after a bad beginning he deserves a happy ending, if you can give Shane the home he’s been waiting for, please contact me.

We are still urgently in need of blankets for our shelter and the Orangefarm township.

If you can assist us it will be greatly received!

We need help to keep our dogs at our shelter and those we support in the township warm now that winter is on its way.

Our furry friends need blankets but the grey ones that are sold as "dog blankets" don’t wash, they fall to pieces, if you are able to help us please buy the washable blankets only.

Thank you for your support, we can collect from the greater Johannesburg area or from Takelot in Pineslopes Fourways.

Easter safety reminder: Keep your dog safe around seasonal hazards

As we celebrate Easter with family, friends, and festive treats, it’s important to be mindful of the hidden dangers this season can pose to our well being dogs. Many common Easter items can be harmful or even toxic to pets, so a little extra caution goes a long way.

Here are some key items to keep out of your dog’s reach:

🍫 Chocolate – Toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting, tremors, seizures, or worse.
🍇 Hot cross buns – Often contain raisins or sultanas, which are highly toxic to dogs.
🔔 Decorations and plastic eggs – Fun for us, but can be a choking or blockage risk for curious pups.
🍬 Sugar-free treats – Some contain xylitol, a sweetener that’s extremely dangerous for dogs, even in small amounts.

Ensure that Easter goodies are stored securely and that children—know not to feed treats to your dog. Creating a calm, safe space for your dog away from food and decorations can also help avoid accidents.

Wishing you, your loved ones and your dog a joyful and safe Easter!

Thanks once again to Harry for his regular donation of food which we took to the township dogs that we fed this morning, without Harry’s support this would not have happened and 53 dogs would have been very hungry as their owners can’t afford to feed them through no fault of their own. Many lost their jobs, others are old and survive on their pensions, all of them wanted to surrender their dogs to us but we simply couldn’t find new homes for so many dogs, our solution was to help them on a regular basis by giving them 2x8kgs bags of food per dog per month. This is a very expensive exercise and we need help, if you are able to donate one bag of food every month it will feed a township dog, in return we will give you the dogs name and a photo of the dog and the information of the owner.

Thank you again Estelle and the Woodrock Animal Rescue team for this amazing donation which we took to our shelter dogs this morning.

The four kennels went to 4 dogs in the township that had no shelter.
We deliver four kennels every Monday with a bucket for water and a bowl for food, we have delivered 2,160 to date and dont intend to stop but need help, each kennel costs us R750 to produce, if you can buy one for a dog in the township or contribute towards one we will send you a photo of the dog that receives it and the information of it’s owner.

Dee is a “golden oldie” Labrador mix, six to seven years old who sadly became unwanted when he no longer barked at everything and everyone and preferred to sit in the sun and relax, his owner decided that he had served his purpose and was of no use to him as a watchdog any longer and abruptly surrendered him to us.

Dee is a gentle soul loving and kind, he simply loves everybody and everything, how he performed his watchdog duties we will never know as he is affectionate and friendly to all he meets.

Dee has been sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped and is a really healthy boy, he would love to be a family dog or a companion to a single person, if you can give Dee his place in the sun please contact me.

Ziggie was surrendered to us after a kind-hearted boy found her wandering in the streets, abandoned and alone. Where she came from is a mystery but this compassionate boy took her home hoping that his Mother would allow him to keep her but unfortunately he was told a firm “no”. Bongani reached out to us for help and Ziggie was given a second chance at life at our shelter where she has found the promise of a new beginning.

Now 18 months old Ziggie has been sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped, while we will never know how she ended up as an unwanted stray, we do know that she was in a very bad condition when we collected her.

Today Ziggie is a healthy, bright young dog who has blossomed into a happy and friendly companion. She gets along well with other dogs and humans of all ages and radiates joy, she is incredibly grateful for everything we do for her and is ready to offer unconditional love in return.

Ziggie would fit into any home and would be grateful for everything she receives, she is an affectionate dog who wants to be loved and will give her love to anyone who will help her. She has no bad habits or traits and simply loves her new life, if you can give Ziggie a space in your heart and home she will love you forever.

Coco is a “golden oldie”and although she has a scary appearance because she is a Boerbull mix, she is a gentle old lady of 7/8 years old with a kind and affectionate personality.

Coco was not wanted once she got old and no longer served her purpose as a watchdog for her owner's cars, she had a hard life but survived the conditions in the township and is still strong and healthy.

Coco has been sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped and has many more years to live comfortably in a home of her own, she is a wonderful companion and would fit into any family as a family dog or as a friend to a single person as she is a friendly and gentle girl who gets on well with other dogs and loves humans of all genders and ages.

Coco really needs a loving home as she is not happy at our shelter as the conditions there are not suitable for an elderly dog. She really is a gentle soul and deserves to end her retirement years in comfort and security, if you can help Coco by giving her the home she deserves please contact me.
