🐾 The Terrifying Risks of Invalid Vaccinations—A Matter of Life or Death
NOT ALL VACCINATION DRIVES ARE SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your pet’s vaccine isn’t administered by a registered veterinarian, it might not be recognized as valid. This isn’t just a minor oversight—it could be a life or death situation. Here’s why:

🚨 Quarantine or Worse: If your pet is suspected of having rabies and their vaccination isn’t valid, they could be treated as completely unvaccinated. This could mean immediate quarantine, locking your pet away for months in isolation. But that’s not the worst part...

⚠️ Legal Nightmares and Travel Horrors: Imagine arriving at your destination only to find out your pet isn’t allowed in because their vaccination isn’t recognized. They could be thrown into quarantine, sent back, or worse—seized by authorities. This is every pet owner’s nightmare, and it can be avoided.

❗ The Unthinkable—Euthanasia: Rabies is one of the deadliest diseases known to both animals and humans. If your pet has been exposed to rabies and their vaccine isn’t valid, authorities might have no choice but to order euthanasia to prevent the disease from spreading. This heartbreaking scenario is a real possibility if you don’t ensure your pet’s vaccinations are valid.

Don’t Gamble with Your Pet’s Life—Make Sure Vaccinations Are Done by a Registered Veterinarian! It’s the only way to ensure your pet is protected, their vaccines are valid, and their life isn’t put at unnecessary risk.

Contact us today for more information and stay tuned for our upcoming vaccination savings and discounts at Randparkridge Veterinary Hospital!

The Magical Mystery of a Cat's Purr: How Do They Do It?

Ever wondered how our feline friends manage to produce that magical, soothing purr? It's one of those enchanting mysteries of the animal kingdom that cat lovers can never get enough of and as humans actively seek out, either from our very own kitties or even from our meditation apps. Whether your cat is curled up in a cozy corner or lounging on your lap, that gentle rumble can make any moment feel just a little more special. So, let's dive into the fascinating world of purring and discover how our whiskered companions do it!

The Science Behind the Purr
The secret to a cat's purr lies in a combination of brainpower and muscle magic. It all starts in the brain, where a neural oscillator sends signals to the cat’s laryngeal (voice box) muscles. These muscles twitch at an impressive rate of 25 to 150 vibrations per second (Hz). Think of it as a tiny internal engine revving up and creating that mesmerizing sound.

As these muscles contract and relax rapidly, they open and close the glottis (the space between the vocal cords) in the cat's throat. When air passes through this vibrating laryngeal concert, voilà – you get a purr! What’s even more incredible is that cats can purr both when they inhale and exhale, creating a continuous soothing symphony.

The Healing Power of Purring
Did you know that the frequency of a cat's purr, ranging from 25 to 150 Hz, is associated with healing properties? Scientists have discovered that these frequencies can help heal bones and tissues, reduce pain, and even lower stress in humans. So, when your kitty curls up on your chest and starts purring, they might just be giving you a mini therapy session!

Why Do Cats Purr?
Cats are mysterious creatures, and they purr for a variety of reasons. Here are a few:
•Contentment: This is the classic reason – a happy, relaxed cat will often purr while being petted or while dozing in a sunny spot.
•Communication: Cats use purring to communicate with their owners and other cats. It's their way of saying, "I'm here, and I feel safe with you."
•Self-Healing: Cats also purr when they are in pain or feeling unwell. It’s believed that purring helps them heal faster and reduce stress.
•Stress Relief: Just like us, cats purr to calm themselves down when they’re frightened or anxious. It’s their natural way of self-soothing.

Purring Through History
Cats have been purring alongside humans for thousands of years, bringing comfort and companionship to many. Ancient Egyptians revered cats for their grace and enigmatic charm, and who knows, perhaps they too were entranced by the soothing sound of a cat’s purr.

So next time your feline friend curls up next to you and starts that gentle rumble, take a moment to appreciate the marvel of nature’s little engine. Not only is it a sign of their love and trust, but it’s also a reminder of the incredible bond we share with these magnificent creatures.

Got a purring kitty at home? Share a pic or a story in the comments – let’s celebrate our furry friends and their magical purrs together! 🐱💖

The Silent Killer

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a serious health condition that often progresses silently, with minimal or no symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage. This makes early detection crucial for effective management and treatment. CKD can significantly impact a pet's quality of life and, if left untreated, can lead to severe health complications.
Understanding CKD in Pets
CKD involves the gradual loss of kidney function over time. The kidneys are vital organs responsible for filtering waste products from the blood, balancing electrolytes, and managing fluid levels in the body. When the kidneys fail to perform these functions efficiently, it leads to the buildup of harmful substances in the bloodstream, causing various health issues.
Early Detection with SDMA Testing
Symmetric Dimethylarginine (SDMA) is a biomarker that can detect kidney dysfunction much earlier than traditional creatinine tests.
Early Detection:
SDMA can identify CKD in its earliest stages, often before any symptoms appear. This allows for timely intervention and management.
Accuracy:
SDMA is not influenced by muscle mass, making it a more reliable indicator of kidney function, especially in older or smaller pets.
Proactive Management:
Early detection through SDMA testing enables veterinarians to create a tailored treatment plan to slow disease progression and improve the pet’s quality of life.
Special Offer: 25% Discount on SDMA Testing
To promote the health and well-being of your pets, we are offering a 25% discount on SDMA testing for a limited time. Early detection can make a significant difference in the management of CKD.
Protect your pets from the silent threat of chronic kidney disease. Schedule an SDMA test today and take advantage of our special offer. Early detection is the key to a longer, healthier life for your beloved companions.

Did you know? 🐱

Gentle abdominal massage can sometimes help a constipated cat by stimulating bowel movements and providing relaxation. Remember, while this can help, frequent constipation needs a vet's attention to address any underlying health issues.

How many times have you seen a dog lunge, growl, bark, the one that got you kicked out of puppy class and then told that you should just put them to sleep. They are aggressive, they are a danger, and you are ignorant and naive thinking there is anything good about that dog. The dog who has pulled you down the road and landed you flat on your back, the one you must take through the back door at the vet, the one who chewed your leather sofa into tiny little bits, the one you fight, the one who is larger than life, the difficult dog.

Most times they are the impossible dog, the difficult dog, the reactive dog. With all these labels comes judgement not only from your family but the professional world too. You should have socialized your dog, but I did. You should be training your dog every day, but I do. You should have done your research on the breed, once again I did……. Extensively. You are the wrong person for this dog……………… perhaps I am. So now self-doubt sets in, regardless of everything you have done, the hours of training, the medications, the behaviorists you have endured and yes I do mean endured. I say this because I’ve experienced their judgement personally but seen it with multiple clients of my own, how cruel and careless these so-called professionals are with their words.

What it all boils down to at the end of the day is that you have that dog.

Yes, socialization, breed, training, experiences all contribute to a dogs behaviour, but guess what….. so does personality, so does genetics and so do you. Just because you’ve done everything right and now your dog is that nutter, doesn’t mean they are a bad dog or that you are a crappy owner, sometimes it is just what it is. My dog suffers with anxiety, my dog gets over excited or my dog dislikes random strangers trying to touch them. Hey to be honest that actually sounds just like me. Does that make me a bad person? an aggressive person? who will I bite?

Realistically there is a higher chance of me biting in comparison to my dog, so are you going to put me to sleep?

Perhaps these labels that they have been given are incorrect? Maybe they aren’t reactive but overexcited, maybe this “aggressive” dog is actually just scared, maybe just maybe they don’t like a specific person or place, or they can sense something that we can’t? Maybe deep in their bones their genetics are screaming out CAUSION, CAUSION, CAUSION! We can’t ever say for sure, wow we can barely understand our own brains, how are we supposed to be experts in canine brains?

With all these things there is one very important factor that no one ever mentions.
This crazy, reactive, impossible dog is the best thing that could have ever happened to me.

You see they love large; they wake you up and challenge you to always do and be better. They change the way you think, move, and react. They are larger than life and so they love just the same. You might be a place they pass through but in the end they always find exactly were they are supposed to be and who they are supposed to be with.

If you are reading this and have had sleepless nights, spent both time and money in searing for help, withstood the judgement and cruelty of others, hours training and working your dog, thousands of hours researching and thousands of Rands on replacing chewed couches, beds and toys and cried your heart out into that very dogs’ coat. Well dam done!!!

No one speaks of these dogs faces when you get home from work, that pure and honest joy, the gifts they present you, an entire tree or two, that recall where you literally have perform the superhero landing, the kisses the cuddles the beauty and gentleness they give you every single day.

Remember you are not alone and what is meant to be will always be. Don’t disregard a dog because someone else labels them, don’t give up on them because its hard, don’t give up on yourself, you just haven’t found the right support yet, keep going, keep trying, this is a dog who will change you and your life for the better.

Need help? We get it, we have been there…… multiple times.

Prepare yourselves!

The weather service has issued a warning for light snow expected in Gauteng next week.

Keep your pets indoors.

Here are some helpful tips:

Keep Pets Indoors: Bring pets inside to protect them from the cold. Provide a warm, comfortable place for them to sleep.

Limit Outdoor Time: If your pets need to go outside, limit their time, and supervise them. Ensure they are wearing appropriate protective gear like pet sweaters.

Check Paws: After being outside, check your pet's paws for ice, salt, and chemicals. Wipe their paws with a damp cloth to remove any irritants.

Provide Warm Bedding: Ensure your pets have a warm bed or blanket to snuggle into. Consider using pet-safe heating pads if necessary.

Hydration and Nutrition: Ensure your pets have access to fresh water and are well-fed to help them maintain their energy levels in the cold.

Exercise Indoors: Engage your pets in indoor activities to keep them active and entertained if outdoor play is not feasible.

Keep your pets entertained!

For Dogs:

Interactive Toys: Use puzzle toys or treat-dispensing toys to keep your dog mentally stimulated and engaged.

Training Sessions: Teach your dog new tricks or commands. This helps with mental stimulation and strengthens your bond.

Indoor Fetch: Use a soft ball or toy to play fetch in a safe, open area inside your home.

Hide and Seek: Hide treats or toys around the house and encourage your dog to find them.

Tug-of-War: Play a game of tug-of-war with a sturdy rope toy to burn off energy.

DIY Obstacle Course: Create a simple obstacle course using household items to give your dog a fun challenge.

For Cats:

Interactive Toys: Use laser pointers, feather wands, or motorized toys to stimulate your cat’s natural hunting instincts.

Catnip Toys: Provide toys filled with catnip to encourage playful behaviour.

Scratching Posts: Ensure your cat has access to scratching posts or pads to satisfy their need to scratch.

Climbing Structures: Set up cat trees or shelves to give your cat places to climb and explore.

Stay warm and safe.
