Saturday morning emergency.
Tricksie from Klipfontein got kicked by some nasty man - how dangerous can a 4 mnth old pup be!
Both fibula & tibia broken. She had a very painful night.
Dr Lisa Kariega Veterinary Clinic - Kariega Community Vet Clinic - KCVC set the leg with a splint and bandaged it while Tricksie was under sedation. These splints cost R950. Thank you so much Dr Lisa, Wendy and sister Inge.
Liz Baker was visiting Kariega Vet when she overheard us discussing the cost and kindly offered to pay for the splint. Liz has always supported our community furkids with many donations. Thank you Liz for your unconditional and compassionate kindness towards our community furkids. ❤️🐾❤️
Tricksie also got her 5 in 1 and rabies vacs, plus deworm & pain medication for the next few days. A Hill’s puppy pack will supply some much needed vitamins and minerals to promote good bone growth.
Now the challenge to keep the bandage dry & intact. She will have 4 weekly appointments at the vet and then Xrays to check healing and steri.
Go well and be good Tricksie. See you on Thursday with a nice dry bandage.

Our community furkids received a very special delivery of dogfood today gifted by Estelle Meldau from Woodrock Animal Rescue in Pretoria - 25 bags of 40 kg = 1000 kg of dogfood. The food was delivered compliments of Value Truck Rental.
Thank you from all of us and the tailwags & barks from our very special community furkids and from those who cannot speak for themselves.
Woodrock Animal Rescue brings hope to hundreds of animals.

The good news. Frisky was sponsored a new Jojo kennel and Charlie in Marselle also received a medium size pre loved Jojo kennel. She was sterilised in 2023. She only left her house to munch some tinned pilchards - “MINE” house.
Happy furkids. Lots of rain on the horizon for next week. Just in time. ❤️🐾❤️

Meet Frisky from
Ekuphumleni. We found him when we were busy with the SAVA rabies vaccination team. I took photos and sent to Sergio Baartzes at Sassy Dog Parlour and asked him if he would please attend to Frisky as part of their community outreach work. This is the first maltese poodle that I have seen in our townships.
Sergio fetched Frisky this morning and upon removing his jersey found a harnass that had been chaffing him on the chest and armpits. We took him accross to Dr Lisa at Kariega Veterinary Clinic and she said an F10 bath, no more harnass and jersey only to be worn at night.
We got Frisky a suitable comfortable collar and he was washed, groomed and dried. Sergio explained to the owner how to care for this little munchkin when he returned him to his home. Thank you Sergio, Bonile and Lindy Heine for ensuring a happy and comfortable little furkid. 💕🐾💕
Frisky is castrated and fully vaccinated according to his passport. We will deworm him again. He had no ticks which is most unusual.
Frisky needs a suitable doghouse. He only has a lean-to as shelter.
If anyone has 1 of the small Jojo type kennels they would like to give to him, please let us know.

Layla is such a sweetie from Ekuphumleni. She was steried last month but Dr Lisa Kariega Veterinary Clinic - Kariega Community Vet Clinic - KCVC diagnosed TVT- (Transmissible venereal tumors are cancerous tumors of the genitalia in dogs).
That means Layla has to visit Dr Lisa every Friday for chemo injections for up to 6 weeks. We have had very good results with the chemo treatments and the dogs do not display any side affects. They love their weekly visits to the clinic where the staff spoil them with treats.
The Eku Paws volunteers have now taken up the task of fetching her weekly from her home and taking her home again after treatment. This really helps our small team of volunteers who transport the 6 steri dogs weekly to the clinic and home again. 💕🐾💕 It truly takes a village of volunteers to help transport our community furkids for veterinary care. Thank you from all of those who cannot speak for themselves. 💕🐾🐾💕

We work in an incredible community and our vets, Kariega Veterinary Clinic run a very loving & warm “family” practice.
Thursday was a mudbath in New Rest, Marselle after the rain, as they are digging up all the roads to lay pipes. It’s just slippery, sliding clay mud that sticks to your tyres and your tackies. It was not possible to get near to the shack with my car, due to trenches and trucks and TLB, so I had to try to walk in the rain to fetch Story for his bandage change. The further you walk, the more mud sticks to your tackies and the heavier they get. Then trying to carry a heavy dog back to the car, while holding onto fenceposts and fences to stop myself from slipping & sliding. I was exhausted.
When I arrived at the vet I said I cant come inside as I had layers of mud on my tackies. Dr Waldo said - “No problem please come inside”. Little Anja looks at me, looks at my tackies and says “sies”. Told her I need boots like hers.
She prompty removed her boots and proceeded to put them onto my feet.
I was in an absolute fit of laughter.
Then she ran off somehere and returned with the scoop and brush to clean up the mud mess which she called 💩 😂.
Never a dull moment at Kariega Veterinary Clinic. We always have some good laughs in between the more serious and sad cases.
This little girl is fearless and wants to hug & kiss every furkid. We all love this little blondie 💕🐾💕
Needless to say, Dr Lisa said Story could not go home in the rain so he spent the night warm and dry in hospital. Hopefully the bandage can be removed next Thursday.

Treats and Treatments
Four weeks ago, when Ms Snoopy was at the Kariega Vet being sterilized, she was diagnosed with TVT - Transmissible Venereal Tumor. These tumors are cancerous tumors of the genitalia in dogs, and are passed from dog to dog during mating. Fortunately, TVT is treatable, and this involves 5 sets of treatments, each a week apart. DAC has been taking Snoopy every week for her treatments, and this morning she had number 4.
Snoopy loves her outings. She jumps into the car where she is presented with a bowl of kibble, which she eats with much vigour! And then happily watches me drive her to the vet where liitle Anja Dreyer is waiting to present her with more treats. Then in the capable of hands of Doc Lisa she receives her treatments, while receiving another batch of treats from Xante! Then it's back home for Snoops, who by now is feeling well treated!

While our focus is on sterilizations, DAC is often called on to help with injured and sick dogs. This was the case for two dogs in Ekuphumleni this weekend. DAC received a call about Simba and Zeus, who had not been eating (alarm bells for biliary). Now DAC knows both dogs well. Zeus is a gorgeous playful young male who entertained our vets no end when he went for his steri a couple of weeks back. And Simba, well he is just a firm favourite amongst DAC and the Vets...Simba was involved in a nasty incident a few weeks ago, which resulted in his leg being broken in two places. After pins in his leg didn't work, the only option for a pain-free life was amputation. The procedures meant he spent a lot time at the Vet, and being transported by DAC between his home and the vet. As a result strong bonds were formed.
So first thing Monday, we secured an appointment with Kariega Vets and the dogs were taken for tests and treatment. Turns out Simba was absolutely fine, and was most probably just pining for his human who had to be away for the weekend. Or maybe he just really wanted to see the angel vets again ♥️♥️♥️. But Zeus, unfortunately was diagnosed with Bilary. But was treated! So he will be 100% very soon.
Both dogs received cuddles and hugs from all the ladies at the vet, there were photos taken and treats dispensed en mass. Like rock stars the two woofs left the vet with goodie bags and at least a year'sworth of love.
Photos show Simba with his best human friend Ken, and a rather unwell Zeus (though I must add he ate like a king when he got home and we dished up his gifted can food).
But... DAC is currently very very low on funds, and it breaks our hearts to think we may have to turn sick dogs away because we dont have funds. So we ask you to donate whatever amount you can. Please. For all the other Simbas and Zeus out there!
♥️♥️🐕🐕
Take care beautiful followers.

All in a week for us at DAC and Kariega Veterinary Clinic - Kariega Community Vet Clinic - KCVC:
Snoopy had her 3 rd chemo treatment for TVT.
Boy had a hairline fracture & weekly check up at vet.
Meisie was burnt with boiling water & was in a lot of pain. Effivet spray is the miracle cure and paracetamol for pain.
Rox moved with his owners to Marselle and was attacked by 5 dogs. Malibonge and volunteers from Kariega Foundation rushed him to the vet and Dr Lisa had to clean him, stitch up wounds and treat for pain. After 2 days hospital care, Dr Lisa sent him home minus the 2 balls he arrived with 🤦♀️and some pain medication.
Storey was hit by a car and has a broken bone in his foot and severe open lacerations on his bandaged leg and stomach. Twice weekly bandage changes. While he was under anaesthetic on Thursday, Dr Lisa castrated him. He is about 5 mnths old.
Pippa modelling the beautiful warm jerseys Kim Anthony bought online for our steried dogs to wear going home in this cold overnight weather. The dogs struggle to regulate their body temperature after anaesthetic. We ask owners to please let them sleep indoors with their warm jerseys.
Spooky gave her jersey a good chewing up and mom stitched up the damage before returning to us. ❤️
7 dogs were castrated and 1 cat.
We try our very best to care for our community furkids. It takes time and money. Please donate generously to help those who cannot speak for themselves. Our funds are at rock bottom.

This little woof was injured while performing a very important job: keeping the Kariega Vet's door open! Fortunately for Door Dog, she was treated and bandaged by the very capable Doctor Janke Dreyer!

A big shout out and thanks to Adri Moller and all her feral cat guardians who feed the feral cats of Kenton, Bushmans, Riversbend, Alexandria and many other areas every day.
These cats have been trapped, sterilised and vaccinated by Adri Our Community Cats. We are so blessed to not have expanding litters of feral cats in our communities.
We do our best to sterilise the cats in Ekuphumleni, Marselle and Klipfontein.
The small team of committed animal welfare volunteers in our communities have been super proactive & determined to stop the unwanted puppy and cat litters and starving puppies and kittens and taking care of sick and injured cats and dogs.
We are winning the war on the puppy & kitten litters, which means ongoing sterilisations week after week. Marselle is a model township with 97% of dogs sterilised and Ekuphumleni well on it’s way.
We & our our vets are willing and able but we need donations to cover the costs of sterilisations which are done at cost by our incredible vet team at Kariega Veterinary Clinic - Kariega Community Veterinary Clinic -KCVC, a registered NPO.
It’s puppy and kitten season again soon.
Please help us to end the scurge and suffering of these unwanted litters.

Superstar Drian Dreyer 🌟
Drian, son of Dr Waldo & Dr Marette Dreyer, Kariega Veterinary Clinic was a super entrepreneur at his school’s entrepreneur’s day and sold a bootload of delicious hamburgers. Well done Drian. 👏👏❤️
Never forgetting the community furkids, Drian donated R500 of his hardearned profit to our community vet account for sterilisations of our community furkids. 💕🐾💕 Thank you Drian for your very kind donation.
Sisi was going home after being on a drip for biliary and Skruffie pup had his first vaccinations. Both dogs are from Marselle.
Wonderful to have young children concerned and involved with the welfare of our community furkids.

Domestic Animal Care - Kenton on Sea has sterilised 1149 dogs and cats in our surrounding communities since we started in 2020. 97% of dogs in Marselle have been sterilised and we no longer have puppy litters, parvo virus and mangy dogs which means we have ended the suffering of these mom dogs and their unwanted litters. Many people comment on how well the dogs look in Marselle.
Our focus since 2023 has been on Ekuphumleni and we have made a huge dent in getting the dogs & cats sterilised. We are planning another mass sterilisation of 50 dogs in Ekuphumleni in October which will be funded by The Periwinkle Trust. Meanwhile we continue with our weekly steries to prevent any further litters.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone who has donated and continues to donate to this incredible project. The PO-Sh-Op in Kenton has supported us with monthly donations since they started trading.
We desperately need funds to continue with our weekly steries and treating sick and injured community furkids. Please support this project so that we can get Ekuphumleni towards the 90% steried level.

Sterilisations continue weekly with 6 dogs plus the ad hoc cat steries, in between the hectic schedule at Kariega Veterinary Clinic - Kariega Community Vet Clinic Kenton.
Some pups need more care than others & we treated Boy for Biliary in April and now castration & a hairline fracture of his fibula. Boy also received a new rubber kennel compliments of the kennel raising initiative by Belinda Wolff. We will feedback later on her incredible project. Both Ginger and Boy live in Marselle and Coco is from Klipfontein.
It’s concerning to find more and more new puppies in the Marselle area that have been brought in from other areas. Thankfully, given our 97% sterilisation rate in Marselle, puppy litters have been eradicated. It’s an ongoing war to find the new puppies and get them documented & sterilised when they are old enough.
We have focussed on sterilisations in Ekuphumleni since the end of 2022 and with 2 mass steries completed, we have made good progress. Another mass steri has been planned for October.
A huge thank you to our incredibly compassionate vets who show so much tender loving care to our community furkids - those who cannot speak for themselves.
As always we need donations to fund the expenses we incur for sterilisations and medications. Kariega Community Vet Clinic does not charge the customary professional costs involved, including xrays, hospitalisations, consultations etc etc. We are truly Blessed.
Please donate generously so that we may continue with our sterilisation project and caring for our sick & injured community furkids. They really need us.

SASSY DOG PARLOUR
Lindy and Serge wanted to spoil 4 community furkids for Mandela Day.
Meet the 2 Marselle furkids- Indevile and Sisi. Indevile was badly matted, so painful for him but Serge, Lindy & Bonile gave them so much tender loving care 💕🐾💕
Thank you so much for giving them an incredible makeover. We know how wonderful they must be feeling, specially after the ticks were removed as well. Both got a Simparica tablet each.

They say not all superheroes wear capes, and I bet that if this superhero were to receive a cape, she would give it a dog in need. Verona Veltman is selfless, tireless and in it for the animals. Today was just another example of her unwavering capacity to give. This little pup is sick and hasn’t been eating. This could mean parvo, worms or biliary – all of which, if left untreated are fatal. But fortunately for Danger, Verona changed her plans, rearranged her day and got this baba to Kariega Vet (another story about heroes, for another day). Diagnosis – worms and biliary – caught early, so treatable.
This is but one of 100s of dogs whose lives have been saved or changed because of Verona, and I thought it was about time she was acknowledged. Verona is not about accolades, she is about the animals, but tonight, please let’s recognise her, and raise a glass to this wonderful human. 🎉🎉🥂❤️🐶🐕

The miracle of a new life story for Snupy, Danger & Stokie.
Joné Haesslich found Danger lying in a depression of mud, tied to such a short heavy chain that he could not stand up.
Snupy and Stokie were also on short heavy chains and no shelter from the weather. The furkids all had chains around their necks. She reported it to us.
The only heartbreaking, short term solution was to give them comfortable leather collars, 4 m long lighter chains with swivels to prevent them rolling up and organise kennels for each as well as food and water bowls and a large bag of dogfood. The dogs were all dewormed, received tick & flea treatments and rabies vacs. Stokie, the youngest about 5 mnths old was booked for castration. The pleasant surprise was that Danger & Snupy had already been castrated. We discussed the welfare of the dogs with the owner and in our visits to give tick n flea treatments monthly, the waterbowls were always full.
The dream was to fence an incredibly difficult garden and it was going to be an expensive job. We continued discussions with the owner and the condition of all 3 dogs improved. Danger has had 2 wash and groom spoils to remove his matted fur. Danger and Snupy are older dogs around 10 yrs old. We spoke about raising funds for a fence on condition that the dogs were released permanently from their chains.
I discussed a proposal for fencing with our American angels to get these dogs released and Heather Smith did not hesitate & embarked on raising the funds required.
Jo Wilmot jumped into action to obtain quotations, source the material
and labour and ensure everything was delivered to this difficult location. Shadrak and I had already planned the best way to fence this garden. Stokie is young and active and could jump as high into the air as his chain would allow. So we needed a 1.8 m fence and gate.
This past weekend at about 17:00 Snupy, Danger and Stokie were freed from their chains - forever! These furkids have only ever “seen” each other- never been able to sniff each other and never been able to play together. Please look at the videos under “comments” after they were released. My cup runneth over. 💕🐾💕🐾💕
Our humble and hearfelt thanks go to our American angels: Heather Smith, Steve Smith, Alexis Smith, Philynn Hepschmidt and Katy Gray deAngelis for making this lifechanging event for 3 beautiful souls, Danger, Snupy and Stokie. Their only dog life experience being a life on a chain. Danger may not have many years left but he is now free. 🐾💕🐾. Thank you Jo Wilmot.
When you are out working in the field, you understand what makes life real for our community furkids and you suffer with them. It is so easy to detach from the world & turn a blind eye to those who are struggling.
We will never stop poverty. We cant save them all, but we can make that difference in as many lives as possible - we rescued 3 furkids this weekend.

Tender loving care 💕🐾💕
Deirdre Lemmer assisted in recovery at the mass steri in Ekuphumleni in April. She was very concerned about Bingo’s condition. She decided she had to take Bingo under her wing and started visiting him weekly to take healthy food for both Bingo and Zushi. We gave Bingo a Bravecto and dewormed them both and gave the owner a bag of dogfood & pilchards.
Bingo has thrived under Deirdre’s care and she still keeps an eye on him.
Thank you Deirdre for taking responsibility to ensure that Bingo and Zushi can live their best lives. Deirdre has been working with their owner to help her to understand the welfare needs of her furkids.

Ultimate Pet Care groomed Danger from Marselle a year ago when his fur was so badly matted. Here they are back again to give Danger a groom. He must be feeling so good. There’s another “whole” Danger of fur - lying next to him. He is Mr Cool and just gives you “the look”.
Snupy, Stokie and Danger live at the same property and we are hoping to be able to fence their garden in the near future. They all enjoyed their treat of pilchards in tomato sauce.
Thank you Vonny Strachan and Noxolo Masekwana for spoiling our precious Danger.
Danger needs a Bravecto for ear mites.
“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way” - Martin Luther King.
It’s been hectic since last week, stray dogs in Kenton & trying to find their homes in Ekuphumleni, dogs needing support, dogs needing fencing, amputation, 2 motor vehicle accidents with severe trauma to legs, running lines with chain and collars and so we try to roll.
This is Bingo that was castrated at our mass steri. He was very thin. We have treated him for worms, Bravecto for mange and a bag of good food. We may have to gove him some F10 shampoo baths. Deidre will continue to monitor him back to health. His sibling, Zushi is in good condition and they both get the same food.
Please donate food if you can at Paws & Claws and Kariega Veterinary Clinic.

Domestic Animal Care - Introduction
The Domestic Animal Care - Kenton on Sea group are made up of dedicated individuals who volunteer their time and energy to helping animals in the rural areas (and further afield) in the Kenton on Sea area, Eastern Cape, South Africa. When a need for assistance has been confirmed the group will do what they can to alleviate the problem as soon as possible. We are mostly focused on the rural communities of Ekuphumleni, Marselle and Klipfontein which is in the local area of Kenton on Sea but also the areas further afield. This project was started at the beginning of 2019 and throughout the year there has been a lot of ups and downs but all in all many animals and their families have been helped.
The project works alongside the great services of Dr. Marette and Dr. Waldo Dreyer who own the Kariega Veterinary Clinic based in Kenton on Sea. The Ndlambe SPCA based in Port Alfred is also an important partner who help us with their years of expertise in the Animal Welfare field and also with services when needed. Throughout the year there have been many different cases we attended to and they range from emaciated, sick or injured animals needing veterinary care, animals without shelter and basic care and many sterilisations needed. There have been dog houses given out, vaccinations, sterilisations, tick and flea treatment, other veterinary treatments like treating tick bite fever and Parvo and much much more. These things are all been funded by fundraising initiatives and generous donations from local individuals. The Kariega Veterinary Clinic is now registered as a SAVA CVC clinic which means they get some extra assistance from this organisation but we always need to keep the account ready for anything. Every cent helps to change the lives of the needy.
Achievements of 2019:
3 x Domestic Animal Outreaches done - One in each rural community, where animals received free basic treatments including deworming, vaccinations and tick and flea treatment. There were also donations of food, collars and leashes given out. These were donated by good-hearted individuals. Over 600 animals (dogs and cats) were helped during these outreaches.
Over 30 dog houses were given out to dogs who didn’t have any shelter or mother dogs with new puppies. These dog houses were donated from local individuals and transported to the needy animals.
Over 20 sterilisations have been done (cats and dogs) during 2019 and these have been funded by the owners of the animals and donations from the local area. This is a very important part of our project as with every dog or cat sterilised it prevents hundreds of unwanted animals roaming the streets, spreading diseases and suffering alone. In 2020 our aim is to do Sterilisation days where about 30 - 50 animals can be sterilised on one day with the help of a specialised veterinary team. But this comes at a huge expense! So fundraising efforts will also be at the top of the list for 2020.
If you would like to find out more about what we do and if you would like to get involved in some way, please send us a Facebook message and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
If you could spare any donations, be it funding or items (new or old), we will be forever grateful! All financial donations to be paid into the Kariega Veterinary Clinic bank account under the Reference - CVC. Thank you for helping us to make a difference to these lost souls!!!
