So just over a month ago we were blessed with the birth of our baby son. Those of you who know us personally know that we have 5 dogs in our home. Bringing a newborn baby into a house with dogs requires careful planning and consideration to ensure the safety and comfort of both the baby and the dogs. Here are some do's and don'ts to help make the transition smoother:

DO's

*Setting up our nursery: Allow the dogs to enter in the nursery while setting it up allowing them to get used to all the new items which will be in the house this is done before the baby even arrives.

*Obedience Training: Ensure your dog is well-trained in basic commands like sit, stay, and leave it. This will help manage their behavior around the baby.

*First Meeting: Have someone hold the baby while another person controls the dog on a leash. Allow the dog to sniff from a distance and gradually move closer if they remain calm or contact a professional to help with this part.

*Positive Reinforcement: Reward the dog with treats and praise for calm behavior around the baby.

*Always Monitor: Never leave your dog alone with the baby, even if the dog has shown no signs of aggression. Constant supervision is essential.

*Separate Spaces: Create designated areas for the dog and the baby to ensure both have their own safe spaces.

*Exercise and Attention: Maintain the dog’s exercise routine to prevent them from becoming overly energetic or anxious.

*Hygiene: Keep the dog clean and ensure they are up to date on vaccinations and flea/tick prevention.

*Controlled Interactions: Allow brief and controlled interactions initially, gradually increasing the time as both the baby and dog become more accustomed to each other.

*Safety Barriers: Use baby gates to create physical barriers if needed to manage interactions safely.

DONT's

*Avoid Ignoring: Do not ignore the dog after the baby arrives. This can lead to feelings of "jealousy" or anxiety. Ensure the dog still receives attention and affection.

*No Pressure: Do not force the dog to interact with the baby. Let the dog approach at their own pace.

*Respect Boundaries: If the dog shows signs of discomfort or stress, give them space and do not push further interaction.

*Overconfidence: Do not assume that a previously gentle dog will automatically be gentle with a baby. Every interaction should be supervised and managed carefully.

*Ignore Signs of Aggression: Pay attention to signs of aggression or fear, such as growling, snapping, or excessive barking, and address these behaviors immediately with professional help if needed.

*Routine Disruption: Avoid making drastic changes to the dog's routine all at once. Gradually introduce new routines and environments to help the dog adjust smoothly.

By following these guidelines, you can help create a harmonious and safe environment for your newborn and your dogs, fostering positive relationships and reducing stress for everyone involved.

As always early socialization will go a long way in helping you through this process, introduce your dogs to new enviroments and situations continuously to create a confident dog which will make this process smoother.

We often see and hear other trainers online talking about the dangers of prong collars, slip lines etc yes they can be harmful placed in the wrong hands for sure, the same as what any bit of equipment can be harmful in the wrong hands.

However I think more trainers should be talking about the dangers of ANTHROMORPHASISM. Not many people understand what this is or how it can be harmful to dogs.

So here is a little breakdown on what it is and how it can be harmful to dogs yet this is something we see daily.

Meaning of anthromorphasism; the attribution of human characteristics or behaviour to a animal.

Why is anthromorphasism dangerous to our dogs?

Anthropomorphism on dogs can potentially lead to misunderstandings of their behavior and needs. This can result in inappropriate treatment or training methods, expectations which are unrealistic, and neglect of their physical and mental well-being. Dogs have their own unique ways of communicating and behaving, and it's important to understand and respect these differences rather than projecting human emotions and motivations onto them.

Dogs are NOT humans and im sure this is why we love them so much. So next time before getting upset because your dogs is doing xy&z rather just sit back and remember ITS A DOG they do not think or act like us.

Video - just some dogs doing what dogs love to do.

Dog reactivity refers to a behavior in which a dog reacts strongly, often with fear or aggression, to the presence of other dogs or specific stimuli. This reaction can manifest as barking, growling, lunging, or even attempting to bite. Reactivity can be a difficult problem to deal with but the keys are empathy, patience and management.

So this past weekend is definitely going to live long in our memories. We were invited to do demos at PetExpo - The World of Dogs and Cats - and it was an absolute blast. We had 2 slots each day one slot for man trailing and one slot for protection work, we were even asked to fill some other slots that were open to keep the crowd entertained.

The dogs did such an awesome job and even though some of the dogs did other demos such as agaility they still gave 110% in our demos.

We would like to thank everyone who helped us this weekend from the people who ran and hid for our dogs to the organizers of the event and ofcourse everyone who came and supported us.

I would also like to give a special thanks to everyone who gave up their time to participate in our demos and for allowing us to use your awesome dogs for the demos your dogs definitely got a fan base after this weekend.

Here are a few videos of some of the demos so are longer than others but worth the watch.

The benefits of hiking with your dogs...

Exercise: Hiking provides a great opportunity for your dog to get exercise and burn off excess energy. It helps maintain their physical fitness and contributes to their overall health and well-being.

Bonding time: Hiking allows you to spend quality time with your dog in a natural and peaceful environment. It strengthens the bond between you and your pet, enhancing your relationship and mutual understanding.

Mental stimulation: Dogs thrive on mental stimulation, and hiking provides a variety of sights, sounds, and smells that engage their senses.

Socialization: Hiking trails often attract other dog owners and outdoor enthusiasts, providing opportunities for your dog to socialize with other dogs and people. This can help improve their social skills and reduce anxiety around new environments and individuals.

Environmental awareness: Hiking with your dog allows you to introduce them to different natural settings and ecosystems. It promotes a sense of environmental awareness and appreciation for nature in both you and your dog.

Health benefits: Regular hiking can contribute to improved cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and joint flexibility for your dog.

Exploration and adventure: Dogs have a natural curiosity, and hiking allows them to explore new trails, scents, and terrain. It satisfies their instinctual desire to roam and investigate their surroundings.

Fun and enjoyment: Perhaps the most important benefit is the sheer enjoyment and fun you and your dog will have while hiking together.

Remember to prepare adequately before hiking with your dog, considering factors such as their breed, age, physical fitness, and any specific needs they may have. Ensure they are up to date on vaccinations, bring plenty of water, pack essentials like food and p**p bags, and be mindful of trail etiquette and regulations.
