“For sustainability, feed efficiency is number one in my book,” says Matt Brown, MJB Ranch owner. Brown’s ranch, located in Lodge Grass, Montana, runs about 800 registered cows and 3,000 acres of cropland. “Our margins are becoming tighter, and we need to do more with less,” he says. “If we can lower our input costs, it's the best way to impact the bottom line and protect sustainability.” Read the full story on our blog: https://hubs.la/Q02VTMD_0

An important debate!

An important debate!

"Does cow size really matter?"

We sure think so!

We know that, generally, as a cow gets bigger she weans a smaller percentage of her body weight.

We also know that there are producers who prefer a bigger-framed cow and have the country that can support those kinds of cows. Alternatively, there are producers whose country is more conducive to smaller, hardier cows.

However, the magic (and the money) lies in the percentage of body weight weaned per cow or the most pounds weaned per acre – not necessarily the biggest calves. This is especially true when we select for feed efficiency and fertility, along with moderate cow size.

Of course, there’s give and take here and the debate is ongoing. But we think the answer is more pounds per acre, especially if you sell your calves at weaning.

𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗙 𝗦𝗔𝗟𝗘 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 — 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗙𝗜𝗘𝗥!

After a very successful inaugural sale last year, the Better Beef Sale is back — better and beefier than ever!

On Saturday 20 July, six of the most trusted and highly respected stud breeders in KwaZulu-Natal will present 60 purebred Brahman and Simmentaler bulls and 100 females at The Elite Bull Ring at Netherwood.

The Better Beef Sale is supported by Tugela Brahmans, Double Bar Brahmans, Broadview Brahmans, Four Feet Simmentalers, Muirfield Simmentalers and Oggendstond Simmentalers. There will also be a number of guest sellers.

The lots will be available for viewing from Thursday 18 July at Netherwood.

The sale will be hosted by AAM, with Andrew Miller presiding as auctioneer on the day.

Last year’s sale exceeded the expectations of breeders and buyers alike, and achieved a 100% clearance rate in front of a full house.

Some of the highlights from last year were the top-priced Brahman bull, bred by Nick and Priscilla Dent’s Double Bar Brahman Stud, which was sold to Shaun and Ant Muir of Muirlands Farming for R280 000.

Another bull bred by Double Bar Brahmans was sold to the Roseveare Trust for R200 000.

Ed Barry’s Four Feet Simmentaler stud sold the top-priced Simmentaler bull for R160 000 to Byron Watson of Bayview Simmentaler Stud, and another Four Feet bull sold for R130 000, also to Shaun and Ant Muir.

Brahman bulls averaged R78 375, and Simmentaler Bulls averaged R68 000.

The average for the commercial females sold was R22 750, with the top pair of pregnant Brahman-type heifers bred by Paula and Donovan English selling for R29 500.

We’re looking forward to another very successful sale this year, with superb quality stud Brahmans and Simmentalers that will have great appeal for discerning buyers.

See you at Netherwood for the Better Beef Sale 2024!
