🎉 Happy birthday to our hospital VIP, Terrance! 🎈

This goofy, lovable guy was rescued by his family and came to us with casts on both back legs and some nasty pressure sores. After bilateral tibial crest avulsion fractures and a snazzy ex-fix on his left leg, he's been recovering like a champ.

Despite everything, Terrance has kept the whole Vetscape team smiling with his silly antics and big personality. We’re lucky to have him around while he heals, and even luckier to celebrate his special day with him! 🎂

Help us celebrate and leave a birthday message for Terrance in the comments! ⬇️

Big news! 🎉

We’re thrilled to announce that Dr. Anouska Rixon has passed her board exams and is officially a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and specialist in internal medicine. This is an incredible achievement that takes years of dedicated study and we are beyond proud of her. She heads our specialist internal medicine team which will be permanently open and accepting cases this May! Congratulations Dr. Anouska!

We had a young horse come in for a foreign body removal this week. Dr. Tabitha Prior confirmed the presence of a metallic foreign body with radiographs and referred the patient into our hospital where Dr. Andrew Gray performed a tenoscopy of the left front digital flexor tendon sheath (DFTS) and removed a wire from the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) under general anaesthesia.

Once the wire was removed, a linear defect in the distal tendon was evident on ultrasound and the presence of a severe tenosynovitis was confirmed. Dr. Gray lavaged the DFTS and debrided the inflamed synovium.

We’re happy to report that the surgery went well and she has returned home. We hope that this filly continues to make a steady recovery 🐎

Today, Dr. Sarah Wilkinson led our team through a dummy foal simulation. We have been taking full advantage of the off season with training sessions and simulations. Not only is it important for our team to be well-coordinated during high stakes emergency admissions but it gives our veterinary professionals the opportunity to revise and fine-tune our protocols.

Every team member plays an extremely important role, especially during emergency admissions! Team work really does make a dream work and we couldn’t be more grateful for the endless dedication and hard work that goes into our patient care!

Peanut, a 4-year-old Dachshund, was brought in after a fall resulted in hind limb paralysis. A CT scan confirmed intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), requiring spinal surgery (hemilaminectomy).

Following surgery, Peanut received dedicated care from our team, including physiotherapy and regular sling walks to support his recovery. Recovering from spinal surgery takes time, but thanks to the ongoing care from his owners and continued physiotherapy, Peanut is happily back at home and making steady progress on his road to recovery!

After x-rays revealed two bones lodged in this little one’s oesophagus and a stomach full of bones and bone shards, our team carefully removed the oesophageal bones. A gastrotomy was then performed to safely remove the remaining bones from the stomach. With a smooth recovery ahead, Nekkies is on the road to feeling much better!

⚠️ Reminder to pet parents: Bones can be extremely dangerous for cats and dogs, leading to blockages, injuries, and life-threatening complications. Always be cautious with what your pet eats!

After being run over by a car, Egypt was referred to Vetscape, where our team, led by Dr. Charlie Boucher, performed surgery to stabilize her femur with a pin and plates. A few days later, she underwent a femoral head and neck ostectomy to address her hip injury. We are happy to report that Egypt has made an incredible recovery and is now enjoying some well-earned rest at home!

A tribute to Dobbie:

With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to Dobbie, a true warrior who fought bravely against cancer.

In November 2024, Dobbie underwent a left frontal craniectomy to remove a large sarcoma, which included the removal of the left eye. The defect was reconstructed using a titanium mesh implant to restore structural integrity. Despite his remarkable recovery and resilience post-surgery, his cancer unfortunately returned.

Dobbie was more than just a patient; he was a beloved member of our Vetscape family. His gentle nature and resilience left an unforgettable mark on our team. Though his battle was long, he faced every challenge with courage and love.

Rest is peace, Dobbie. You will always be remembered.

It's Feel-Good Friday!

We have received some great updates from our patients’ families and would love to share their progress:

Dobby, a 20-week-old Whippet, underwent surgery after being hit by a car and suffering multiple fractures. With rest and rehabilitation, he’s recovering well and getting stronger every day.

Zoë, a 5-year-old wirehaired terrier, was unable to stand due to a neurological condition. With treatment and ongoing care, she’s making steady progress at home.

Briar, a 6-month-old Labrador, was diagnosed with bilateral elbow dysplasia. After arthroscopic surgery and an ulna osteotomy, she’s now on the road to recovery.

Tara, a 10-year-old Chihuahua, faced significant spinal issues leading to weakness and ataxia. After undergoing spinal surgery and starting intensive physiotherapy, she’s making strides in her recovery.

We’re so proud of these patients and grateful for their dedicated families! Wishing them, and all our other recovering patients continued progress.

This young steenbok, affectionately named Klippies by our team, was brought in after-hours after being hit by a car. Upon arrival, our dedicated night team, led by Dr. Andri Oosthuizen, performed a full assessment, stabilized him, and provided the necessary emergency care.
Fortunately Klippies responded well to supportive treatment. After careful monitoring, he was cleared for release and safely returned to his natural habitat.

We’re sending out a massive congratulations to Dr. Emilie Leus for passing her European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM) specialist board exams! We hope that all of her studies have been well worth this moment and we’re so excited to see what the future holds for her at Vetscape 🐎

We had a very special patient return home this week!

Luna was referred to Vetscape for a closed comminuted bi-articular displaced fracture of the Phalanx 1 of her right hind limb. Dr. Andrew Gray and Dr. Sonia Marcos reduced the complex fracture using implants and stabilized it by applying a pin cast for her recovery. The repair involved an arthrodesis of the pastern joint, allowing for motion of the fetlock joint to be maintained.

Despite preventative measures, Luna developed reduced gut motility and needed colic surgery to empty her caecum. She recovered well and remained on box-rest for an extended period of time to aid the healing of her fracture. Once she was finally ready to move around in a larger space, we can safely say that she thoroughly enjoyed going out to her small grassy camp during her days in hospital.

Our team is thrilled at what an incredible recovery Luna has made and it really is heart warming to see her reunite with her friends!
