Meet Kaida, a little fighter with a heartwarming story!

Kaida was initially brought to us by a rescue facility for a pectus excavatum correction - a condition where the chest wall is sunken, making it harder for pets to breathe and move comfortably. This was repaired by our specialist surgeon Prof. Brandan Janssens, with the assistance from Dr. Andri Oosthuizen.

Kaida has since made a full recovery and found her forever home with our amazing vet nurse Sr. Jesse and receptionist Cody.

From a challenging start to a happy ending, Kaida's journey reminds us why we do what we do!

Ophelia presented with a hard, painful abscess in her shoulder. A sample of the pus confirmed that she had a Corynebacterium infection. This bacteria is known to cause persistent infection and when her deep-seated abscess didn’t respond conservative treatments, the decision was made to surgically remove the infected capsule.

Her surgery was performed under general anaesthesia due to the fact that the abscess was very close to vital structures such as the carotid artery, jugular vein and vagal nerve and the risk of her moving during the procedure could not be taken.

She recovered well post operatively but just a few short days after her confined movement plan had come to an end, she attempted to jump over her paddock fence. She was swiftly seen to by Dr. Emilie Leus and our equine intern, Dr. Tiffany Parker who carefully tried to save as much of her skin as possible. Unfortunately, due to the location of the injury, a portion of her skin did die off but the wound is healing well and granulation tissue is forming.

We are happy to report that Ophelia has a new found appreciation for time spent outside with her friend from within her camp boundary. We’re wishing her a speedy recovery!

Meet Panther. He was referred to Vetscape after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon. Prior to surgery, our team conducted a thorough examination, including an echocardiogram to ensure Panther’s heart murmur posed no risks for anesthesia. Under the expert hands of our specialist surgeon, Dr. Frans van Heerden, Panther’s tendon was successfully repaired. We're thrilled to share that Panther has made a full recovery and is now back home, enjoying life with his loving family.

Who needs breeding season blues when you’re in your isolation greens!

We are SO grateful to every member of our dream team for pulling out all the stops this busy time of year. From long repro days to even longer nights in isolation with diarrhoea babies and closely monitoring dummy foals to being in theatre performing late night colic operations, all departments are flying. We wouldn’t be able to make such magic happen without our incredible team!

A big thank you to everyone involved!

From being one of Vetscape’s most critical patients to growing up into a sassy little lady, this girl has stolen the hearts of our equine team.

Unfortunately, she did not have the easiest of births and our veterinarians had to assist both mom and baby during a dystocia. She was born with multiple fractured ribs and was diagnosed with Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome. After some very long days and nights of intensive medical care, the team felt that this girl was stable and strong enough for her surgery to repair the broken ribs over her heart.

Although making a steady recovery after surgery, quickly learning how to find her feet and suckle from her mom, her time at Vetscape was not over just yet. Her sassy nature landed her in trouble and after a suspected kick to the face, she had to return to our hospital for a jaw fracture repair! Thankfully, her baby braces are now out and she’s back to enjoying life on a farm.

Many vets in South Africa have encountered and treated dogs with the Spirocerca lupi parasite. Often, they face the challenge of a persistent nodule in the oesophagus post-treatment, which could potentially be an aggressive type of cancer. Duma was no exception. After successfully treating the Spirocerca infection, a nodule remained. It was too deep to biopsy and too risky to leave untreated, so Duma was referred to Vetscape Small Animal Hospital. Traditionally, this would require a complex open chest surgery to remove the affected oesophageal segment, a procedure with significant morbidity, and could be argued as overly aggressive if the mass turned out to be benign.

To avoid this, we sought the expertise of a surgeon specializing in oesophageal diseases in humans, whose experience and incredible endoscopy skills was needed. With the support of Karl Storz SA, a submucosal dissection was performed entirely endoscopically, thus avoiding an open chest procedure. The best news is that the mass was benign, caused by chronic inflammation from the parasitic worm. Duma is now happily recovering at home!

For a little yearling, this horse sure did have a big twist in his colon!

Our team quickly put him on the table and found a twist of 720º which had caused this little guy’s colon to not receive oxygenated blood for an extended period of time. A complete resection end-to-end anastomosis of the large colon was performed by Dr. Andrew Gray and Dr. Sonia Marcos. This horse received intensive medical care post operatively and we’re happy to report that he made a steady recovery and has returned home!

Lika, who is owned by our amazing night vet, Dr. Andri, came into Vetscape feeling under the weather. She was diagnosed with a very dangerous small bowel obstruction caused by a linear foreign body. One of our specialist surgeons, Dr. Brandan Janssens, performed the surgery with Dr. Andri assisting. Lika bounced back immediately and is back to her mischievous ways, including looking for things to chew and swallow!
